"The Hobbit" follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was long ago conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen), Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage). Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever… Gollum (Andy Serkis).

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities… A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-Earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

While most of the Company of Thorin Oakensheild is related to the royal and noble line of Durin, Bofur, his brother Bombur and their cousin Bifur most definitely are … not. Born and bred in the West, descendants of coal miners and iron workers, they have joined the Quest for the Lonely Mountain partly to seek their fortune and partly because they were told the beer was free.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is set to be released on December 14th, 2012!

These look like they have the least quality editing out of all of them so far, but even that considered, they look great.

Awesome!

@clarkkent1985....chill bud...not all dwarves are going to look the same. there will be plenty in the film that look every bit as much as they did in LOTR. PJ wont fail to do this right. YOunger dwarves are going to look much different than the older and more war-weathered dwarves. have faith man.

@ClarkKent1985: They look MUCH better than the dwarves in LotR. Far more like the dwarves Tolkien described than the rather cliched looking, cookie-cutter, putty nosed dwarves at the Fellowship council.

Look at that photo you posted. They look a bit ridiculous - with bad make-up. I love that film, but the dwarves are the weakest visually.

Have you even read the book btw?

There is no way it could be condensed into one film and not feel rushed. The Battle of the Five Armies alone and the aftermath would take up at least an hour of screen time (if they rush it). You want a whole film at least just to take up the just first half of the book up until the confrontation with Smaug. You then have all the shenanigans with the elves and men of Dale, Bjorn and all the aftermath of that. Plus the expansion on what Gandalf was up to the whole time (dealt with in the book in one short sentence, but a necessary expansion here for it all to gel up with LotR). Plus the gaps between the Hobbit and LotR covered in the Silmarillion and appendices of LotR...

2 films is a Very Good Thing. It shows they want to take their time and tell the story properly.

But like you say - haters gotta hate I suppose.

"I have the feeling that the dwarves are being changed to market their toys."

@ClarkKent1985 Being changed from what? From Gimli? Do you want them to all look the same? We saw 1 dwarf in LotR. In the Hobbit, if they make them all look 100% like Gimli, then not only would the casuals who've never read the book not be able to tell them apart, but also it would make it hard to develop their characters.

Based on this logic, all the wood elves who appear in the movie should look like Legolas, and all the humans should look like Aragorn, otherwise, they are just trying to sell toys.

Please explain your point better.

Bombur looks great, I was wondering how fat they would make him! All the Dwarves have looked spot on as far as I'm concerned.

@clarkkent1985....i doubt PJ is stooping to the toymarket. Im sure that we are seeing variety simply because we didnt see a whole lot of dwarves in the LOTR....the elves on the other hand were used a plenty in the films....give this a chance. I think your calling it out way too early.

as for me...i cant wait for these films.

Legolas has already been confirmed for a small part.

Legolas wasn't in the book "The Hobbit", but Thranduil was, and since he'll be in the movie, I don't mind having a small cameo from Legolas. After all, Legolas probably would have been with Thranduil anyway, but Tolkien hadn't invented Legolas yet.

It's a small cameo, and it'll show people who've not read the books that Thranduil is Legolas's father. In the LotR books, it said so, but this way they can show it in the movie. No problem with it, as long as they just keep it as a cameo.

But this film (moreso the second) will bridge the gap between the two films and expand on details only mentioned in passing in the books, but expanded on, as I already said, in the Silmarillion and appendices to the LotR - which if you're going to complete the story, is a Very Good Thing.

I really don't see how any fan of the book(s) could possibly be anything but pleased that it'll be two films. It WILL be the Hobbit - in far greater detail and depth than one film alone could deliver - but it will also be the Hobbit+

As a Tolkien fan how, pray tell, is that remotely a bad thing?
