We've known for months that the Lizard would be the villain in 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man, but many have wondered exactly why we've not had official confirmation from Sony. Well, we have now, as Entertainment Weekly have revealed in the latest issue of the magazine, which will hit newsstands this Friday. There's also some interesting new quotes about the tone of the movie from Andrew Garfield and director Marc Webb, and a high quality version of the cover featuring Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

EW can also exclusively confirm that Rhys Ifans will be playing Doc Conners, who, in an experiment gone wrong, transforms into one of Spider-Man’s most formidable foes ever, the Lizard.

The Amazing Spider-Man promises to be a "more contemporary," "more gritty," and "more character-driven" look at the comic book hero. He’s a hero the 27-year-old Garfield knows well. Growing up, "I related to Peter Parker [Spidey’s alter ego] so much because I felt like someone else inside," he says. "I loved the comic books and the animated TV series and I even dressed up as Spider-Man as a kid."

Adds Webb: "Ultimately what this movie is about is a kid who grows up looking for his father and finds himself. And that’s a Spider-Man story we haven’t seen before."

With an all star cast that includes Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, Denis Leary as Captain George Stacy, Rhys Ifans as Curt Connors, Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben and Sally Field as Aunt May, The Amazing Spider-Man is set to be released in 3D on July 3, 2012!

Garfield is a brilliant choice, he'll rock it.
But I hate how the suit looks dirty all the time.
Dusty dark smears all over it.
Genuinely looks like basketball skin sewed into a suit.

Looks really camp to me in that picture.

Just reminds me of that Jack Black parody for the MTV awards when he is designing the spiderman costume with the slogan "Just the right amount of gay!" next to it.

I'm really glad they're changing everything and making this movie better than the others..Because..seriously... No one liked the other movies with that terrible costume, casting and writing. I'm glad they're going to get it right this time. I'm sure the Billion dollars that the other movies made was just a fluke.

Or maybe I'm a sarcastic jerk.

How pathetic is it that we still have banner ads for green lantern. They are just desperate to make their money back

I loved the ultimate spiderman comics when I was about 11+,still got them all actually in a box and I love that skinny sleek spiderman, toby was broad and more the average spiderman you get back in the day so Im really excited about this,I dont mind the suit its a change,I would of probably complained if its was exacly like tobys suit so Im happy, and I got sick of the green goblin story line in raimis trilogy so Im even more happy they didnt redo that, lizard should be awesome

The costume is pure Shit, but Garfield was a good choice for the part/character and I expect the best for the movie.

ugh I cannot get behind this movie, no matter how hard I try, I may go and see it, but it won't be midnight release and I have a feeling i'll walk away from the movie saying "it was so incredibly average just like I thought, and Toby was a bajillion times better"

Still don't like the new suit, If it aint broke don't fix it. I know its a reboot and director Marc Webb wants to put his stamp on it but it is just change for change's sake and is no improvement of a classic design that has lasted nearly 50 years. Any one notice that there is no actual 'WEBBING' to the design - it is just a grid. Have a look at the mask as well.

Garfield should have had his hair cut like 4" to Peter Parker form. Instead he looks like 80's Parker

One thing. Garfield has proven to me that he IS a good actor in everything I've seen him in so far.

And I love Emma Stone ...

@SelinaKyle-About the only thing I have issue with is his hair, but maybe I'm showing my age.
Enjoyed Spider-Man v.1, although not thrilled with the 3rd movie. Costume could be more purist, but I'm okay w/that.
I am looking forward to a younger Spider-Man, going back to the early days with Lee/Ditko when Pete was still in high school. Garfield's body type looks more like earlier Spidey and some more recent artist's take on him.

Im hoping the film acts as the Batman Begins of the franchise for me. Wasnt interested in 1 or 2 even though they were decent, 3 was fun because it was pure nonsense, so im hoping this gets me interested in the character where Raimi's films failed.

With the exception of the eyes on the mask, i'm digging the new suit! Raimi's suit is still better though, but my opinion might change if we finally get some footage of the new suit in motion, Garfield has the perfect build for Spider-Man! Trailer now please!

Everything looks good so far, we just need a damn pic of the Lizard! People complaining on how the suit looking different, fuuuuuuuck youuuuu! This movie needs to be far different from the original trilogy and it's more modern and unique. This will make Garfield huge and I'm sure he won't want to mess things up.

And trying to find his father?... Hmmm.....

that's a horrible photoshop job of his head and neck on the suit, however, with effects applied, the suit looks awesome to me. And he seems committed, moreso than Tobey " I don't want people to know me as spiderman" McGuire.
