The creative team behind the Lord of the Rings trilogy returns to Middle-earth with this adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic precursor The Hobbit. Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh share writing duties with Guillermo del Toro on the Warner Bros./MGM joint production, the story of which will span two films, the first of which is entitled, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

As a young Dwarf prince, Thorin witnessed the destruction and terror wrought when a great fire-breathing Dragon attacked the Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. After slaughtering many of Thorin’s kin, the great serpent, Smaug, entered The Lonely Mountain and took possession of its vast store of gold and jewels. No-one came to the aid of the surviving Dwarves, and thus, a once proud and noble race was forced into exile. Through long years of hardship, Thorin grew to be a strong and fearless fighter and revered leader. In his heart a fierce desire grew; a desire to reclaim his homeland and destroy the beast that had brought such misery upon his people. So when fate offers him an unusual ally, he seizes the chance for revenge.

Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf
Cate Blanchett as Galadriel
Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins

Sir Christopher Lee as Saruman

ehhhh I don't like it, he should look a lot older than that. Even if he ages in the middle of the movies, it wouldn't make much sense that he ages to the point that I assumed he would look...ehhh I don't like it :/

It took some adjusting to get over the fact that the Hobbits in LOTR were not fat as Tolkien had described. So, PJ's Hobbit is not Tolkien's Hobbit. PJ's LOTR was truly EPIC, so I'm pretty confident in his interpretation of The Hobbit!

According to the book, Thorin was the oldest of the company of dwarves, followed closely by Balin. He looks a bit too young, but still really cool. It kind of fits the additude of the character. I do wish his beard was longer, as with som of the other Dwarves.

Hey- Boromir and Faramir were described as having black hair and grey eyes. Did they in the movie? No. But it was still pretty awesome.

@Intruder, That'd be on so many different levels of awesome it can't even begin to be typed out into a script, filmed, go through the editing process, and then shown on the big screen. It'd just be too awesome for our human technology to handle.

This is very smart. Jackson said the film would't be a visual rehash of LOTR. They are making the Dwarves look kickass. No complaints there. I didn't think they should make a Hobbit, but it's happening and I have faith in Jackson.

Smuag should make people shit they drawls.

i trust PJ, but it's a shame that a lot of these dwarves hardly have a beard... especially Thorin; according to the book all of them have!
