Many thanks to Erik Amaya over at Comic Book Resources' "Side Reel" for the following excerpt. As with any rumor to come off of a set during filming, take it with a pinch of salt for the time being, but this may very well be a key scene in the upcoming movie, depending on whether they [SPOILER]decide to use this moment to kill off Jonathan Kent as I reported last night following leaked pictures of his headstone[END SPOILER] or as the emergence of Clark's ability to fly! Stay tuned for more details as and when we have them!

Meanwhile, Reeler Mike of Steel sent me the this note: "I talked to a friend of mine who was a 'featured extra' (which is apparently different than a regular extra) in the 'Man of Steel' filming down in bufu Illinois. He told me the scene he filmed, over a two day period, involves citizens running away from a tornado. Jonathan Kent is apparently swept up in the tornado and Superman has to fly up and save him." Thanks, Mike.

How do you think the movie is shaping up so far? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place, and if you have any details or photos you'd like to share about this movie, feel free to get in touch by clicking on the "Contact Josh Wilding" link at the top left hand side of this page.

STARRING:

Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman
Amy Adams as Lois Lane
Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent
Diane Lane as Martha Kent

I can only hope that they are keeping Sups origin short and not a major part of this film. Do we really need to see how superman became superman again?

Unless this is part of a major Trilogy and important to the superman universe....please keep his childhood story short.

I need a drink.

@TheDukeofMadmen: They can't make any plans for a sequel until the lawsuit gets sorted out.

Then again, Burton never showed Batman's origin. But i don't mind an origin in Man of Steel cause it's been since 1979 that we haven't seen it on the big screen.

Superman flies in to a tornado and saves someone. Hmmmm, sounds like another stereotypical Superman film. Pity, I was looking forward to something new.

Why IS an origin film needed? Flashback scenes to handle an origin is all that is needed. At the rate they are going with Superman Returns and Donner's lousy sequels we will never see the likes of Braniac, Metallo or Darkseid on a big screen. The odds this one is a one-shot film are pretty high so what then? Another reboot and origin story in 5-6 years?

Yes an origin story is needed. New movie, new cast, new direction the movie is being taken. And the last time I checked, the last Superman movie that focused on his origin was over 30 years ago. I don't want to see anymore crystal crap.

I agree that an origin isn't "needed", but it won't ruin it for me though.
DonnsTib
DonnsTib - 8/18/2011, 9:55 AM
I agree with JDUKE, we need a new defined origin, no Superman the Movie, no Lois & Clark, no Smallville. Let's let Zach do what he does best. Tell a great story for a great movie.

I'm fine with an origin story at this point because it sounds like this version of Supes (Cavill) is signed on to be in World's Finest teamup with Batman and/or the new JLA movie. If this will FINALLY be the first movie hinting at a connected DC universe than it's a SOLID jumping off point. Hopefully DC has learned their lesson that they need to stop with this pretentious "all our heroes exist in their own universe" bullshit idea.

With the Avengers scheduled for next summer, the Superman movie (summer of 2013) can finally be the opening that DC has to begin their slow buildup to a JLA and/or other type of team up movie.

It's crazy to think about it but that famous easter egg scene in I AM LEGEND of the Batman/Superman logo was FOUR YEARS AGO! And DC has done nothing, NOTHING to hint at a wider DC universe in their movies. It pisses me off so damn much.
Shaman
Shaman - 8/18/2011, 10:09 AM
113- Last we heard it sounds more like Cavill will be in this film only. Do you have a link to where he signed on for other films as Superman?
113
113 - 8/18/2011, 10:21 AM
@Shaman - a few days ago someone posted an article with "sources" saying that two Worlds Finest scripts are being developed by WB/DC. One where Christian Bales Batman mentors a young Clark Kent (Cavill) and another script (in case Bale doesn't sign on to keep playing Batman) where Clark Kent (Cavill) mentors Batman.

This info, of course, cannot be verified yet. But I'm HOPING it's true and it would make sense. Like I said above, Cavill's Superman would be the PERFECT jumping off point for a connected DC universe ultimately leading up to World's Finest and a JLA movie.

Shaman...I think 113 is just speculating, or wishing. One of the two. I'm sure we read the same article he did that came out last week about how the studios game plan is to have Cavill play Supes, and to TRY and get Bale to do Batman again. Nobody has been officially signed. Atleast that is what I took away from that article...
Shaman
Shaman - 8/18/2011, 10:31 AM
Damn, i actually missed that article! I sure hope it's not just a rumor. I've been looking forward to a real World's Finest film ever since the godawful I Am Legend.

It only seems logical to think that the man who raised Batman back from the ashes who is the same man who is producing Superman would ultimately join both of these films without hesitation? In a cameo or action sequence that would intertwine both heroes.

Personally it would be great if in a Batman movie you see the appearence of Superman. In a scene where Batman is way entirely over his head and about to be killed by some Evil Being Superman swoops in and distracts the enemy away from Batman, as Superman leaves the scene you Batman shoot off a miniature tracking device and simply hear Batman say....Thank you but now you will deal with me... Thus allowing Batman to finish off the rest of the villians...

Then after the Superman Opening Sequence...you use Supermans Batman intervention as the Prologue Action scene in the movie.
I dont really know how you would go about filming or writing the script for it but do something really cool so the first Superman scene is what everyone has always wanted....

Superman beating the [frick] out of somebody!!!

@LP4

Yeah, i like the idea that Johnathan doesn't bite it from a heart attack or old age and it takes a twister to take him out. I think with a character like his that always dies, changing the way he dies is nice for us fanboys.
LP4
LP4 - 8/18/2011, 11:45 AM
@valieriesghost- Agreed man. Although a volcano would have been...interesting too :P

But yeah all joking aside a tornado killing Jonathan sounds WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better and more interesting than a lame heart-attack.

DC/WB plan is to bring in (Ryan Reynolds)Green Lantern at the end of Man of Steel as he comes back from Oa. Also, talk of bringing in Henry for Green Lantern II.

New Batman for 2015 and the Flash for 2014.

Keep and eye out for Ryan on the set!!

@Ranger14- I agree with you dude...i don't know why they feel the need to RE-cover the origin we already know. Not just for us older-gents but there are plenty of children who know his origin simply from that catastrophic Smallville show.

I'm hoping the origin will won't cover HALF of the movie. If the rumor of Smallville only being covered in 15 minutes of the movie, then I'll be happy. 15 minutes is really nothing at all. But anything over 15 minutes just seems like pushing it.

What fans want is to actually, visually SEE SUPERMAN and to see Superman fighting someone. That seems pretty simple, I don't see why the studio is struggling so much with that very basic and very simple concept.

@LP4 a volcano would be epic! the twister carries him to Hawaii and just dumps him off...Bye Bye John

@valeriesghost- Hahahahahahaha!!! Exactly, damn i was soooo f'd up this morning i couldn't even see straight hahaha so in my dillusion i mistakened "tornado" for "volcano" hahahahahahaha

OMG that would be epic and funny, Jonathan Kent falling into a VOLCANO!! hahahaha it's like "how many ways can Jon Kent die?" hahahahaha

heart-attack...tornado...volcano...or...as you said- tornado carrying Jon Kent INTO a volcano hahahahaha so BOTH haha. the volcano just seems so [frick]ing random! hahahaha

@valeriesghost- Hahahahhaha yeah seriously man, like every incarnation on film he dies differently, great idea man!! That would be epic. Donner films= heart attack, Smallville= heart-failure due to being controlled by jor-el. Superman Reboot= Tornado...reboot of the Superman reboot= Tornado carrying John into a Volcano, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

This is comedy gold here.

@valeriesghost- Damn just the mere thought of a tornado picking up Jon Kent and dropping him into a volcano seems hilarious. I think I'd be more pumped for the movie if THAT was his cause of death, then i'd be like "HOLY [frick] this Jon Kent is [frick]ing hardcore! It took BOTH a tornado and a volcano to kill him" hahahahahaha
