Is Gerard Butler to play Captain Britain?

Though it may only be a rumor, it seems that the '300' star is being lined up to play the UK's greatest superhero!

A Hollywood Insider has told the website 'ShowbizSpy' the following,

"This would be a different angle on the usual superhero movies and not just because it is set outside of the US."

"It will be darker and grittier than movies like Spider-Man and Iron Man — kind of like Marvel’s answer to The Dark Knight."

"There are few British actors who could take the title role but Gerard is the clear favorite. He’s perfect for it."

Gerard Butler to be Captain Britain?

Aug 21 2009. Posted by Adam

* gerard butler

Gerard ButlerGerard Butler is being lined up to play Captain Britain in a movie version of the cult comic book character.

It will be yet another movie inspired by Marvel’s tales and would see Gerard in an all-British blockbuster.

The role would make the Scottish hunk — who can currently be seen starring opposite Katherine Heigl in chick flick The Ugly Truth — as the UK’s answer to Captain America.

“This would be a different angle on the usual superhero movies and not just because it is set outside of the US,” dished a Hollywood insider. “It will be darker and grittier than movies like Spider-Man and Iron Man — kind of like Marvel’s answer to The Dark Knight.

“There are few British actors who could take the title role but Gerard is the clear favorite. He’s perfect for it.”

Butler, 39, was recently seen making out with his The Bounty costar Jennifer Aniston — while the cameras weren’t rolling!

Sounds good.

@Gunsmith - Gerard Butler MADE 300, the film itself is overrated.

Its really wierd because i was actually taliking to SirPrize and DarthMulder about a possible Captain Britain movie earlier today!

LEE: unfortuantely the details seem pretty vague - this is no more than a rumour but its a damned exiting one!! From the way that this is said, "...kind of like Marvel’s answer to The Dark Knight." im thinking that maybe it will be made by Marvel Studios! The quote really excites me - Marvel's answer to TDK? That can only be one helluva good thing! :) Oh and i found the article sort of by accident on a pretty great site called 'ShowbizSpy'!

superdog: lol (asshole!) hehe ;)

Gerard Butler could be perfect for the role - he's a great British actor and if this is gonna be a dark and gritty movie, he'd definitely be the right guy for the part!!!:D

I don't think he could be Captain Britain, but thats just my opinion
BaronBubba

Hmm... The thing is, I only have a basic understanding of "Cap O'Cross Th' Pond"... But how can it be dark and gritty with Merlin, Siege Perilous, Sword of Might/Amulet of Right, etc? It'll seem more of a fantasy (even if it IS a dark one), and not the same grittiness as TDK...
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 8/21/2009, 6:56 PM
BaronBubba: id like them to actually make it more like the Ultimate version of the character and (especially if its made by Marvel Studios) have Captain Britain created by the super soldier serum only to maybe kill him and then introduce the fantasy stuff to resurrect him - as long as they dont go too over the top with all that stuff, i think it might work out quite well!

Great fins Joshua! Great casting too. He would make a damn fine Brian Braddok! But i would prefer Michael Fassbender myself. I used to love the old Cap Britain comics when it was just him, Megan and Psylocke. Wasn't crazy about Excalibur though.

ROR: Thanks! :) Its wierd you should say that because I watched 'Eden Lake' for the first time yesterday and as I was watching it I couldnt help but think that he both looked perfect for the part of Captain Britain and was such a great actor he could pull it off as well! Great minds think alike!! And yeah, I also really enjoyed the original Captain Britain run by Alan Moore and Alan Davis - those were some great comic books! (but they were written by the writer of Watchmen so its not a huge suprise!!)

MarkCassidy - 8/21/2009, 7:22 PM
He was great in Eden Lake, but it wasn't until i saw him in Inglorious Basterds that i really knew he would be perfect for Cap B. You know he was Stelios in 300 aswell?

Shame there was never a Captain Ireland:(..closest we have is Banshee, whos [frick]ing brown bread now!

dancingmonkey08 - 8/21/2009, 7:27 PM
Hell yeah, there has been no word on a Captain Britain movie at all so it is great to see this. I havent read too many Cap Britain comics but he did always look like a really interesting character! And again he can offer a different take on the superhero genre! Plus he is a British superhero, which is great to see because it has always been American comic book characters on the big screen (apart from V in V for Vandetta and I suppose Wolverine who is Canadian!) and the few other superheroes around the world have not gotten a look in. And Gerald Butler is brilliant casting! I would love to see this movie but the big question (already brought up by LEEE777) is whether he will be owned by Fox or Marvel Studios? I hope your right about him been owned by Marvel Studios, josh!

JoshWilding - 8/21/2009, 7:43 PM
ROR: i didnt know that he's in Inglorious Basterds (going to see it on Tuesday!) Id heard that he was in '300' but i still havent gotten round to watching it yet - i am planning to buy it on blu-ray though! at least you guys have Banshee, i dont think that Wales has anyone unless you count Christian Bale playing Batman, lol! ;)

dancingmonkey08: me to! heres hoping that Fox keep their grubby hands away from this one!!

superdog: you wont regret it man! it really is an excellent thriller/horror movie!
dancingmonkey08
dancingmonkey08 - 8/21/2009, 7:45 PM
Yeah Ror, its a damn shame we dont have a proper Irish superhero. He (or she) would show the rest of the superheroes how it was done! If there was an Irish superhero, Norman Osborne would be a distant memory in the Marvel Universe and there would be no Dark Reign! lol But maybe its better theres no Irish superheroes, they would do a couple of days work, then go on strike until the newspapers stop saying bad things about them!

Yeah I've seen that video last time you put it up. That was kinda my inspiration for my character :)

you know all these non Americans play American comicbook characters/heroes bale (welsh), Reynolds (Canadian), Patrick Stewart (British) ledger (Australian) maybe we should return the favor. So in that vain I give you Ben afleck for captain britian :)

Hang thine head in SHAME!
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 8/21/2009, 8:07 PM
superdog: uh, thanks but you can keep him! ;) Afleck may not be the best actor but he did a pretty great job directing Gone Baby Gone IMO!

superdog
superdog - 8/21/2009, 8:10 PM
I agree. And i've stated before that I thought affleck was good in daredevil. I just think turnabout is fair play
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 8/21/2009, 8:14 PM
He was good in Daredevil..he just sucked in everything else he's ever made! Except Hollywoodland and i agree Josh, he did a great directing job on Gone baby Gone.

I will take many of your fine Yankee actors for Cap B however. The only prob is, Americans have a bad history of doing convincing Brit accents
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 8/21/2009, 8:18 PM
Seriously though, there are probably a fair few US actors who could do a good job with Captain Britain but i have to a agree with ROR that the accent might be a slight problem!
