FABLES Movie Still In Development; Jane Goldman Now Writing The Script

Last we heard on Warner Bros.' planned adaptation of the incredibly popular Dc/Vertigo comic series, Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair) was on board as director. Now the film's producer has revealed that the project has a new writer: X-Men: First Class & Kick-Ass scribe, Jane Goldman.

Fables has had a pretty difficult journey to the big screen, and though it hasn't quite made it there yet, the latest news is encouraging at least. During an interview with CBR, producer David Heyman provides the first update we've has on the DC/Vertigo adaptation since June of 2013 when it was announced that Nikolaj Arcel would be directing. According to Heyman, Arcel is still very much on board, but Jane Goldman (co-writer of Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, Kingsman: The Secret Service and more) is currently working on the latest draft of the script. As for why the project has taken so long to get off the ground, Heyman says: "these things always take longer than you want. And Fables is not easy by any means, but I think it'll be pretty great". The premise sees a bunch of fairytale characters (variations on Snow White, the Big Bad Wolf, Little Boy Blue etc) evicted from their world and forced to relocate to New York. There's still no release date, but it's possible Warner Bros. plan to announce their full slate of Vertigo adaptations all at once. Are you guys looking forward to finally seeing a Fables movie? Or do you think some of its thunder has already been stolen by the likes of Once Upon A Time? Sound off below.

How is this different from Once Upon a Time, you know, that lame TV show?

This should be a TV show instead. And not like that drab 'Once Upon a Time'...thing.

Fables is way, way better than OUAT. I'm excited that a movie is still in the works.

Please people, Dont compare Fables to OUAT or Grimm because they are cheap knockoffs that dont hold a candle to the original. I love this series and hope its handled well.

@dethpillow - yeah, but TV SFX have come a long way. Plus, shorter seasons (a la Mad Men, House of Cards,... basically anything on pay cable) allow for better budget management, methinks.

Anyway, godspeed to WB.

@Fairyemblem honestly your best bet would be at the very beginning. They sell volumes of it on amazon. The first arc is just a random murder mystery that introduces everyone but if you feel like skipping that (which I would advise not to) you could always jump into the farm revolt arc.

Also is "The Wolf Among Us" telltale game considered a canon prequel now?

I heard Gusto's prostate is ending as well.......or was that his sanity?!

Joe, Gus still goes to that amateur proctologist at the truck stop. I told him to get a second opinion because the "taste test" isn't supposed to be part of the prostate exam.

@TheBest20

The other rumor was that WB was going to do up to three movies based on comicbooks etc......

We already have confirmation they are doing two DC movies a year starting in 2106 and I can see them doing more mature rated R movies based on Graphic Novels or Vertigo properties. To me that will be a big advantage in the long run.

I personally would have liked a HBO show instead, but this should be good still. I think Fables has great potential for several movies. So it will be interesting to see where they take this film.

Never read the comics, but the video game The Wolf Among Us is awesome!

The only way this would work as a TV show is if HBO or Showtime picked it up so that they could be more mature and use the source material to its full potential. Definitely a TV-MA type show.
