Matthew Vaughn On How A Key X-MEN: DOFP Scene Would Have Went With 'Juggernaut'

We know Vaughn (Kingsman: the Secret Service) would have used a younger actor to play Logan in Days Of Future Past, but the director tells Empire that his take on the standout scene in which Quicksilver rescues Magneto would also have been very different. "I'm the Juggernaut bitch!"

Okay, so he wouldn't have repeated that bit of direlogue, but another incarnation of 'ol Juggy would have featured in the movie. X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn has already revealed that had he returned to helm Days of Future Past, we would have seen a younger version of Wolverine in the '70s-set portions of the film, and it seems that's not all he'd have done differently.

While chatting to Empire on their most recent podcast, Vaughn described his vision for the awesome Quicksilver rescue scene -- and it didn't involve Quicksilver! Instead, it would have been Juggernaut (the unstoppable villain played by Vinnie Jones in X-Men 3) who smashed through the Pentagon and led Magneto to freedom. Originally, the super-fast mutant didn't factor into the sequence at all, and it began with Beast piloting the Blackbird over Washington airspace. This much we already knew, but Vaughn's description adds in some dialogue from the characters involved.

"I had Juggernaut being thrown out of a plane at 20,000 feet and using his head to go down a hole to get to the bottom of [The White House]. I had Beast saying, ‘I have a plan,’ and him replying, ‘What’s the plan? What’s the plan?’, and they go higher and higher and Beast was going to go, ‘This is it!’ and chuck him out the window. Then he goes smashing through [The White House] with his and Magneto goes, ‘Who the [frick] are you?"

Though that sounds cool in its own right, the Quicksilver slo-mo scene is fantastic, and Vaughn himself thinks it's “the best scene in the movie”. The director goes on to admit that Singer's take on things worked out for the best, admitting with a laugh: “I would have made the movie worse. The Quicksilver one was better.” What do you guys think?

CBM fans are particular about the costumes of their heroes.

Maybe it's me.... I don't think that Juggernaut scene makes sense at all.

"I mean how do we get Magneto out?"

"Let's drop a 900 pound person on top of the building having him go through numerous falls until he falls at the bottom where Magneto is."

I mean it's not very subtle.

quick silver was a very forced but awesome part of the movie, why they didnt keep him along till the end with the sentinels baffles me.
If I was the director I would have used fast and slow shots of the scene, either mixing the two or showing his perspective then everyone elses of the situation. having him in purely slow mo in a 2 minute scene really didnt play off well that he did all that in about a second.

I still hate his outfit. It was an amusing scene but I thought overall DOFP was passable...IMO. The whole Mystique and Wolverine show is getting old. I'm looking forward to Apoc so we can see the old, real first class together, even if I'm not the biggest Singer fan.

It doesn't make much sense. Nor does having a younger Wolverine in the '70s when the character would have reached adulthood a century before that. I like Vaughn, but I think we dodged a bullet.

Ror

Or having a younger Wolverine makes even less sense when in the previous film, you had this happen.

What they need to do is go back in time and cast JLaw as Jean instead of mystique, so the series would revolve around a much more interesting character.

The problem with Qucksilver is it makes no sense why they would get rid of him after getting Magneto. He would make the job a lot easier.

Doopie, they simply opted not to explain her new power, its not a plot hole though. And Hank developed a serum to alter the genes in all mutants, not just him. He said he tinkered with it to give Xavier his legs back. Again, not something that's fully explained but it still doesn't contradict a previous plot point. I'm aware these movies do that quite a bit anyway though.

This must be the third time this Juggernaut-scene description is posted on this site, not really news anymore IMO.

The scene was great. Quicksilver being as fast as the Flash was laughable though. Way overpowered.

This scene is not detailed anywhere else on this site (that I can find). We knew Quicksilver replaced Juggernaut, but that's it.

That is a pretty stupid idea. I get so mad at the stupid ideas these guys have had and have implemented so far in the X-Men movies. The Quicksilver scene wasn't that brilliant, it was pretty cheesy actually.

I'm very happy we got what we did. I like Vaughan, he's a good director. But I don't think he brought anything extra special to the X-Films. His First Class ranks above X3 and Origins, but for me, doesn't quite compare with Singer's films. First Class was a good movie, but it was very dull.

And his remarks about a younger Wolverine, 10 years after Jackman's cameo in First Class? Sorry Matt, but that's a massive brainfart moment.

@Doopie

Evan Peters has already confirmed he'll be in Apocalypse. So we should see another badass scene.

the scene with a younger actor playing Logan would not have worked. The simple reason being is that Hugh Jackman had a cameo appearance as Logan in First Class.
