Teaser & Plot Details For Gareth Edwards' STAR WARS ANTHOLOGY: ROGUE ONE Revealed

No more referring to these movies as Star Wars spin-offs or standalone films, as it's just been announced at Celebration Anaheim that they'll officially be known as "Anthology" movies. We also have our first logline for Rogue One, and a recording of the teaser that was screened...

The "Conversations with Josh Trank and Gareth Edwards" panel at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim is currently in full swing (though Trank actually pulled out!), and the Godzilla director just provided plenty of new details on his spin-off movie, Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One. Apparently the story will actually be set before A New Hope, around the same time as the Star Wars Rebels animated series. Edwards confirms that it will be a heist movie, and even provided an official logline: "A band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans in Star Wars anthology film, Rogue One."

A brief teaser was also shown featuring a TIE Fighter flying over a jungle landscape, before the camera pans up to reveal the Death Star. The voiceover is Alec Guinness as Obi Wan Kenobi: "The Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic, before the dark times, before the Empire." But, the Jedi won't actually feature in the movie. “It’s about the fact that god’s not coming to save us, and we’re on our own,” said Edwards. “The absence of the Jedi is omnipresent in the film. It hangs over the whole movie.”

I hope someone records and uploads this whole panel on youtube, since the official Star Wars channel thought it would be a good idea to show Star Wars Shakespeare instead...

Still don't see the need of Star Wars spin-offs.

@Desr0w We most definitely don't, but if they end up being great then I won't be complaining.

"A band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans in Star Wars anthology film, Rogue One".

The Death Star was already being constructed towards the end of Episode III. So this is set during Episode III.

I know I'm probably grasping at straws, but could this be some kind of adaptation of one of the Rogue Squadron games?

"Edwards underscored that the film is aiming for realism, and that it's a no-holds-barred war picture. "It's the reality of war. Good guys are bad. Bad guys are good. It's complicated, layered; a very rich scenario in which to set a movie."

I already love this movie!

This movie actually sounds pretty good. The military scenes in Godzilla would suit this movie good.

@Desr0w Star Wars has always been catering specifically to spin-offs. Toys, comics, books, games, etc. The universe is the most rich, expansive and creative story ever written. It can literally go anywhere. Is it needed? No. But it can be done and not hurt anything.

@TheGambitFreak

This says nothing about them stealing the plans before it was constructed. They're just as useful to the rebels after it has been built.

We're getting a straight up war movie in the Star Wars universe! That is just too awesome!

Wow! This is already in production??? When did they start principal?

Also, the only thing I hope they don't do, please please, don't show us recast younger versions of Han and Leia / Luke etc!

The imperial march theme sounded like Hans Zimmer did it. Sounded different but pretty cool. Looking forward to seeing more from this and future Star Wars spin-offs that fill the void between the episodes.

I was there at the panel, haven't been so excited for a movie in a long time. From the way Edwards presented himself as a fan, I have ultimate faith in this movie.

I'm most interested in the fact that there are no Jedis in this, I've always wanted to see a movie not focusing on the wizards in the Star Wars Universe, I'd prefer an X-Wing based, but I have no problem with seeing foot soldiers.

"Resistance"? Disney must really not like the word 'Rebel' anymore.

@ALegendaryPanda uh oh, a 'realistic' Star Wars? Some people might not be too happy.
