Gareth Edwards Says To "Expect The Unexpected" From STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE

Or as we now know it'll be called; Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One. In this new video interview from Star Wars Celebration Anaheim, directer Gareth Edwards shares a few more details about the movie. By the sounds of things we won't be getting another clear-cut good vs. evil story anyway...

Yesterday during his Star Wars Celebration Anaheim panel, Godzilla director Gareth Edwards revealed the first official details for his standalone Star Wars movie, and in the following video interview with Flicks And The City, he elaborates further. Going on what Edwards says here we can probably expect a slightly more adult journey to the galaxy far, far away when Rogue One hits theaters next year.

A band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans. Star Wars: Rogue One, written by Gary Whitta and Chris Weitz, will be directed by Gareth Edwards. It’s scheduled for release on December 16, 2016.

I'm glad that the future of Star Wars is not only showing immense respect for its roots, but is also breathing new life and diversity into the franchise.

It's funny I just read an article where someone was saying the theft of the Death Star plans would make a great story, and here we are!!!

By definition, expecting the unexpected is impossible.

But w/e. I'm almost looking forward to the more than Force Awakens. I though the recent Godzilla was amazing.

I'm kind of excited about this movie because it's Star Wars, but at the same time, one of the (many) weaknesses of the prequels was that everyone knew what the final outcome was. This kind of killed some of the suspense. I think the same might be true with this idea. While it's nice to look at the events behind the stealing of the Death Star plans, at the same time,we ultimately know what's going to happen - they succeed in some way. Yes, there will be some action, thrills, probable deaths, etc along the way, but we ultimately know how this will end. If they're going to make other Star Wars movies, I'd like to see them explore the ancient times where there would be more freedom to tell a creative story that we wouldn't necessarily know how it was going to end...

Yeah, it was fun, until we thought it would be smart to start stringing fishing line across the street (one end tied to phone pole, the other across the street to the neighbors garbage can)...we'd get them to slow down with the 'fake rope' they'd speed back up, catch the line on their cars, away the garbage can goes...god, we were idiots when I think back haha

Its going to be great that we're getting more than just the main star wars films so the universe can be explored and fleshed out much like the EU did.

expect the unexpected...yeah...yeah, now see I did enjoy Godzilla (2014) and think the next one will be even better. But the only UNEXPECTED thing I can get from this; is it being GOOD. The story of how the death star plans were stolen, in DETAIL...WHO ASKED?! A star wars movie without any Jedi...why would we want that? No jedi? No force users? Not star wars.

@dethpillow Yeah, I think they're desperately trying to distance themselves from the bad reputation that "spin-offs" have, especially after Sony gave it such a bad name with stuff like "Aunt May spin-off!" getting thrown around after the hacks.

"Anthology" sounds a lot more grown-up and serious, I guess, but it still sounds dumb to shoehorn into the title. They can keep saying it's part of an Anthology series if they want, but STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE is plenty good enough!

"A star wars movie without any Jedi...why would we want that? No jedi? No force users? Not star wars."

This might be a generational thing, but the prequels pretty much managed to do the impossible - they made TONS of people sick of seeing Jedis and lightsabers and lightsaber duels. They got overexposed in a bad way.

The new trilogy seems to be recognizing that, and so does Rogue One. Even if the main trilogy gets filled with Jedis vs Sith and lightsaber duels galore eventually, the spin-offs should still distance themselves from all that. Otherwise, there'd be no need for spin-offs in the first place, you know? It'd just be more of the same.

I love the idea of the Anthology series. This movie sounds really neat.

I was thinking.. if they erased the Expanded Universe, did Boba Fett survive the Sarlaac in the current continuity?

I'd be shocked if Boba Fett didn't survive in this new canon. Too much new territory to still explore with his character. And by that what I really mean is, 'there's too much new money to still make from his character'. They can't have him 'officially' go out like that punk who got inadvertently knocked into the Sarlaac Pit. As for the 'no jedi' being in Rogue One. They didn't say 'no sith'. An appearance from Lord Vader may still be in play. Either way, sounds like a cool flick.
