UPDATE: SANDMAN & Other DC Vertigo Titles Move From WB To New Line

Apparently Warner Bros. will keep their DC superheroes (Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman etc) but Vertigo properties that are considered "subversive" such as Joseph Gordon Levitt's upcoming Sandman adaptation and the long gestating Dark Universe will fall under the New Line banner...

According to Deadline, all future DC Vertigo adaptations will move to Warner Bros.' sister studio, New Line. So while all of DC's superhero characters (basically anyone that makes up the Justice League) will stay where they are, Sandman, Dark Universe and any potential big-screen outings for the likes of Constantine, Preacher, and Lucifer will be steered under Toby Emmerich and Richard Brener of New Line.

This probably won't end up making much difference, but those hoping that Sandman might be set in the main DCCU - which would be true to Neil Gaiman's comics even though the Morpheus character rarely interacts with the superheroes - could be disappointed. Then again, it's not like these Vertigo movies will be developed by a rival studio, so there's every chance of crossovers down the road.

What do you guys make of this? Happy WB will be concentrating only on the capes, or would you prefer it if Dream and his slightly edgier pals remained under the same banner?

UPDATE: THR reports that Dark Universe will actually remain at WB, and it looks like the project may have lost Guillermo del Toro as director!

Would be cool to see Sandman in the DCCU, but I have a feeling they wouldn't be going that road anyhow. Oh well.

Who wants macaroni?

i'm guessing WB will focus on projects that are priority right now, big budget movies for summer realease while New Line will be doing some underground projects (tv projects as well). In other words if they gonna ever do a Swamp Thing movie it will end up being made by New Line, if they gonna focus on new Green Lantern WB is a way to go.

I think so.

If this means that NONE of these properties will inhabit the DCCU, then this a mistake imo. "Inhabiting the same universe" doesn't mean "throw a reference to Batman every few minutes". Sandman can exist alongside the Justice League and literally never bring it up, aside from maybe a quick glimpse of one character. That's all that would need to happen. Dark Universe should most definitely be firmly set in the DCCU though.

The biggest thing the DCCU potentially has going for it is that it can be so diverse right out the gate. We can instantly be exposed to a world with aliens and deep, crazy, abstract supernatural stuff happening. We can get New Gods and the Endless and The Spectre all existing alongside each other. The DCCU can be EPIC, and cutting out some of these properties will definitely hurt that.

@OmegaBlack13 They can still take place in the DCCU as evidenced by SHAZAM and comments made by del Toro before he left DARK UNIVERSE.

@masterchief12 If WB decides to move forward with DARK UNIVERSE then I'd assume they'd still utilize the majority of the treatment he sent in last December. I wouldn't be surprised if he was still involved even if he's not directing, and I'm sure there are other directors who have the capability for the project.

i think that Sandman and other DC properties can have shared universe as long as the characters from Sandman do not appear in any WB movies but the other way around.
WB comic book characters could be guest in New Line comic world. Just a thought.

Guillermo del Toro leaving the JLD project. Everybody saw that coming. Shame that James Wan is doing Aquaman because he's got skills in horror movies and he could be good replacement for Del Toro.

del Toro left another big project?

Say it ain't so!!!

Seriously, if his replacement is great and we get Hellboy III out of Guillermo I'd consider it a win-win.

So ... will we see annoucement of JLD at Comic Con with Del Toro as a screenwriter and new director in the lead ? Or is it too early ?

@CombatWombat

I don't think Del Toro's script sucked, I'm more inclined towards WB asking Del Toro to make it more emo, edgy and tattoos.

I'm glad he'll be working on Pacific Rim 2.

DC comics movies at Warner bros.

Vertigo movies in New line.

Warner transferred Vertigo movies to New line to be able to do more comic book movies, of course is good news, some people do not notice that? really?
