Andrew Garfield Comments On Tom Holland Taking Over As SPIDER-MAN
The Amazing Spider-Man movies weren't particularly well received, but most would agree that Andrew Garfield did a pretty good job as Peter Parker and his wall-crawling alter-ego. Now, the actor speaks for the first time about being replaced in the role by Tom Holland...
You really do have to feel for Andrew Garfield. After fulfilling a life-long dream of playing Spider-Man on the big screen - and doing a great job of it - Sony decided to reboot the franchise (again) and replace him in the lead role. Nobody really blames Garfield for the shortcoming of The Amazing Spider-Man movies, and there was even talk of him reprising the role following the Sony/Marvel deal... but alas it wasn't to be, and those in charge felt the need to bring in a new, younger Peter Parker in the form of Tom Holland.
But far from being bitter about it, the ever-gracious actor is happy the role is being passed on to someone with the right tools for the job, and also seems relieved to be free of the enormous pressure of playing such an iconic character. Here's what he had to say to ET Online at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's Annual Grants Banquet in Beverly Hills last night.
"It feels lovely, especially because Tom Holland is a really, really great actor. He was in this movie The Impossible and he was just this incredibly powerful, sensitive, just wonderful young actor. And [he's] a dancer, so his body’s the right [form]. I'm just really excited to just be a fan again as opposed to bearing the weight of it."
He also says he's really looking forward to seeing Holland's performance, as are we all. The young actor will debut as Spider-Man in next year's Captain America: Civil War, before going on to star in a solo-Spidey flick. Do you think Garfield should have been kept on as Spider-Man? Or are you glad we're getting a full reboot with no ties the Marc Webb's earlier films?
