Andrew Garfield Comments On Tom Holland Taking Over As SPIDER-MAN

The Amazing Spider-Man movies weren't particularly well received, but most would agree that Andrew Garfield did a pretty good job as Peter Parker and his wall-crawling alter-ego. Now, the actor speaks for the first time about being replaced in the role by Tom Holland...

You really do have to feel for Andrew Garfield. After fulfilling a life-long dream of playing Spider-Man on the big screen - and doing a great job of it - Sony decided to reboot the franchise (again) and replace him in the lead role. Nobody really blames Garfield for the shortcoming of The Amazing Spider-Man movies, and there was even talk of him reprising the role following the Sony/Marvel deal... but alas it wasn't to be, and those in charge felt the need to bring in a new, younger Peter Parker in the form of Tom Holland.

But far from being bitter about it, the ever-gracious actor is happy the role is being passed on to someone with the right tools for the job, and also seems relieved to be free of the enormous pressure of playing such an iconic character. Here's what he had to say to ET Online at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's Annual Grants Banquet in Beverly Hills last night.

"It feels lovely, especially because Tom Holland is a really, really great actor. He was in this movie The Impossible and he was just this incredibly powerful, sensitive, just wonderful young actor. And [he's] a dancer, so his body’s the right [form]. I'm just really excited to just be a fan again as opposed to bearing the weight of it."

He also says he's really looking forward to seeing Holland's performance, as are we all. The young actor will debut as Spider-Man in next year's Captain America: Civil War, before going on to star in a solo-Spidey flick. Do you think Garfield should have been kept on as Spider-Man? Or are you glad we're getting a full reboot with no ties the Marc Webb's earlier films?

It's a shame to see him go he was my favourite Spidey and it would have been awesome to see him become one of the Avengers.

I really enjoyed Garfield as Spidey. He had the look and demeanor of Peter while and the wise-cracking that I loved growing up reading the comics. He was a much better fit for the role than Toby McGuire, and I'm sad to see him go. I actually did enjoy both Amazing Spider-Man films, though they were obviously not the best.

I liked Garfield, it was a shame that Sony completely [frick]ed up with the franchise.

@Kjo0212

Well spiderboy is a dancer, and dancers have long lengthy body types, which is what garfield is saying, so him saying "no homo" is unnecessary in this instance

Yeah- Garfield shoulda been kept for CIVIL WAR, because Spidey's grown and Married in that story arc. It woulda been great ta see that happen, THEN get the younger Spidey solo films afterwards with this new dude- which, I'm so looking forward to anyway. I quite like TASM- favourite comicbook film. MCU films seem to stick to pretty basic standard for the most part, and TASM didn't try to follow suit..for obvious (non MCU) reasons. Music was more interesting, cinematography was great, Curt Conners was great, captain Stacy and- pretty all-around good performances. TASM 2? Good movie, still had some stunning scenes, but yeah, disappointed with Electro. That's pretty much it; the TASM films made Spidey clever, witty, and FAST, which we didn't really get with consistency in the previous ones. I mean, Spider-man actually earned the 'Amazing' title in the TASM films...(End mild Rant)

Loved him as Spidey, saddened to see him not be in the MCU, but I'm excited to see Tom in the role.

Marvel and Sony need to get this going with Tom, Andrew and Tobey!

MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!!

I'm going to get in here before all the unnecessary overwhelming contempt for him, but he is such a talented actor, if only he was nabbed by marvel for something less iconic and a role that would suit his age, because the dude really is a talented actor, too bad he wasn't given material worthy of his acting prowess, having him play a sort of cool yet outcast angsty teen was a big mistake because the combination forms an unlikable personality, and of course people would blame him, I mean, actors come up with their own dialogue and everything, right? The guy can play shy, insecure type, he did it in another movie and succeeded. Anyways, best of luck to him and I hope to see him given another chance like how Chris Evans was.

He really did care a whole lot about doing the character justice and giving us a heartfelt and real performance. And I appreciate that. It's too bad that Sony was in it purely for the profit...

Nope hated him as pp in the nicest possible way tho, visually perfect pp but the switch from one accent to the obviously fake New York accent was terrible (hey I'm swinging over heyere), the non stop crying, the show off Peter Parker kissing gwen like a playa at graduation, awful chemistry with aunt may it just all ruined it too much, I know alot of it was to with script and direction aswell but in the end just no... The best thing about that film is the costume and now it's finally back at marvel there gonna frick with the costume again :(
Iron spider wtf seriously I just want spider man

like someone else said, it's sad that he doesn't get to play Spidey anymore,he's just gonna have to settle with being young, talented, successful, good looking, rich and banging Emma Stone :P

Most of the things ppl dislike about Garfield's performance were out of his hands. I enjoyed his enthusiasm and the chemistry he had with Stone was wonderful. I feel bad that he will not be remembered in a positive light in regards to his stint as 'Spidey'.

That said, it had to be done; he had to be replaced to avoid any confusion about the continuity between franchises. Additionally, it's important that Marvel Studios be allowed to put their own stamp on a flagship character. They shouldn't have to be starting off "in the hole" when introducing him to audiences, so to speak.

That gif makes me realize how much Josh Hartnett favors Jeff Bridges; it's in the eyes. I wouldn't mind seeing Hartnett tackle a young version of 'Kevin Flynn' or his son.
