Emma Thompson Says If She Sees Another SPIDER-MAN Movie She's "Going To Hang Herself"
Steady on Emma! I mean nobody was thrilled with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 but that might be going a bit far. The ever-awesome Emma Thompson (Harry Potter, Remains of The Day, Love Actually) has chimed in on the whole "superhero fatigue" discussion...
There's a notion among many people in the movie industry that it's only a matter of time before the sheer volume of superhero movies leads to the public becoming tired of them, and they all but go the way of the dodo - and while British actress Emma Thompson doesn't seem to share that opinion specifically, she definitely sounds like she's sick of the formula... and of a certain Wall Crawler in particular!
In a new interview with Vulture Thompson was asked how she feels about the superhero movie boom, and had the following to say.
“I loved the original Superman with Chris Reeve because there was a real tongue-in-cheek-ness to it, [but] after a while, you do get a tiny bit cynical about it. The fact that I know they’re going to win out in the end has now slightly interfered with my continuing to go to those movies. If I see yet another Spider-Man, I’m going to have to actually hang myself. I can’t do it anymore! They’re all marvelous, but how many times can you make this franchise, for crying out loud?"
We're obviously all big comic book movie fans here, but does she make a valid point? To be fair, Spidey is now under Marvel's control (for the most part) and they've promised we won't be seeing a retelling of his origin story in his 2017 solo outing - but just how different can/will they make a movie about a teenager with superpowers learning about responsibility while he fires webs from his wrists?
