PENNY DREADFUL Casts 'Dr. Jekyll' & 'Dr. Seward' For Season 3

A pair of famous literary doctors are coming to the third season of Showtime's brilliant Penny Dreadful, as both Henry Jekyll (and, we assume, Mr. Hyde) and a female take on a Dracula character

Penny Dreadful has already been likened to Alan Moore's League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and those comparisons are going to become more frequent now that they've added Dr. Jekyll to the mix.

According to Variety Shazad Latif (The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) will play an interpretation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Henry Jekyll, and most likely his murderous alter-ego Mr. Hyde at some point, too. The site also reports that Patti LuPone, who played Joan Clayton (aka the Cut-Wife) season two, will be returning as a different character: Dr. Seward, who will treat Eva Green’s bewitched Vanessa Ives with an “unconventional new approach.”

Other new additions include Wes Studi as Kaetenay, "an intense, enigmatic Native American with a deep connection to Ethan (Josh Hartnett)", and Christian Camargo as Dr. Alexander Sweet, "a zoologist who strikes up an unlikely friendship with Vanessa."

Penny Dreadful returns with 9 new episodes in 2016.

Season 2 was amazing - waaaay better than season 1.
Loved Patti Lupone's character and I'm quite curious to see how she will play a different one.

Between this show, Hannibal and The Strain, there's a mild wave of quality horror TV shows that are flying just under the radar.

After the finale of season 2 I was really hoping the Dr. Jekyll rumors were true. I mean, some people might think it's a bit much to have two "mad scientists" on the show but this is really an amazing opportunity to have Jekyll juxtaposed as a FOIL for Victor.

Victor is reeling from the revelation of what he has truly done and the insinuated consequences it could truly have. Before that last episode it was still more of a game to him. Fun and curiosity. Challenges with science to do the impossible even if his first failed experiment has come back to haunt him. Now though the fantasy is thoroughly destroyed and all the illusions brought about by his trumping curiosity are burned away in a bloody ballroom.

Part of the exploration in the identity of his character and that of the monster is the idea that all the negative aspects embodied by his creation come from himself, from "the monster inside" being projected into life through his experiment. And now it walks freely on it's own seeking identity of it's own. And Victor must live with the idea that he manufactured a body for his personal demons to inhabit.

Jekyll on the other hand invokes his inner monster in an entirely different way. Where Victor projects it outward into his creations, Jekyll transforms himself, physically bringing the inner monster to the surface. Another thing is that while Victor is conscious and aware, forced to look at what he is by looking at what he has made, Jekyll disappears and is replaced by Hyde. Jekyll can't look into the face of his own monster and can only ascertain from the aftermath. He can't comprehend in the same way Victor has been forced to by the season 2 finale.

Seeing these two juxtaposed in the same show will be a fascinating character study.
