According to Latino Review's Dave Gonzalez, we might just have the name of another contender for one of the female lead roles in Rian Johnson's still-not-officially titled Star Wars: Episode VIII. He's heard that Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Jupiter Ascending, Beyond The Lights, Concussion) has joined Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) and Olivia Cooke (Me And earl And The Dying Girl) on the shorlist - and also that it's actually two separate characters that they ladies are in the mix for, meaning two of 'em could well wind up nabbing parts in the flick.

No details on the roles themselves, but apparently both are "substantial". Who emerges as the frontrunners remains to be seen.

Star Wars: Episode VIII, which also stars Benicio Del Toro and the returning The Force Awakens cast, has a release date of May 26, 2017.

ugh, I wish ppl would quit sourcing HH and LR. Both sites are very questionable. However, if any truth to these stories, why are they looking for 2 lead female roles? How many leading roles are there? Does Rey die? I just hope we aren't going to get different sets of leading charaters for each movie.

@marvel72 - it is not. I only got half way thru and fell alseep, and I never fall alseep during movies.

@jollem Jupiter Ascending is garbage and I highly doubt that half the theater was leaving after only 10 minutes of Guardians. That rarely happens, especially with ticket prices today.

@Jollem regardless, walking out of any movie 10 minutes in is stupid on every level. Maybe an hour in I'll understand. But you paid around $10 to watch 10 minutes of a movie that, given your previous comments, you were probably gonna hate anyways, and 10 minutes is not enough time for anyone to actually figure out if they're gonna like a movie (MOS opened with unwatchable Avatar rip off shit and ended up being kind of okay) and you're telling me that there were more than half the people in that crowded room that are as dense as you? You're straight full of shit lmao

When the trailers came out I liked everything I saw about Jupiter Ascending... except the two leads in their respective roles. I ultimately didn't watch it on the big screen and haven't watched it yet, but I will someday!

I wanted to run out of the theater during Jupiter ascending. It was a mess. Also this is the third movie the wachowskis made with the rebirth theme...

Btw GOTG was ok,I was able to enjoy it because it worked and should have been a mess. But it wasn't great. The part where starlord grabs the power stone and the others join him...that music. That was a good moment. Can't deny that. But it has a marvel feel that I really can't get into anymore.

Only because they announced it so soon after his latest film was a hit.

You forget that Trevorrow was in the mix for Episode VII, and probably only got the Jurassic World job because of it.

I tried to like Jupiter Ascending. I thought the Wachowski's were returning with greatness in mind. It didnt turn out so well. Sucks for them and Tatum. Dude cant catch a break when it comes to action flicks.
