Gwyneth Paltrow On Her IRON MAN Co-Star: "Nobody Is Worth The Money RDJ Is Worth"

Commenting on the massive difference between what male and female stars earn in Hollywood, Gwyneth Paltrow brings up the vast fortune amassed by this year's highest paid actor and her Iron Man/Avengers co-star, Robert Downey Jr. More past the jump...

It was recently announced that there was to be a federal investigation into discrimination against female directors in Hollywood, as just 5% of directors chosen to helm major studio movies are women. If evidence of discrimination is found, it could mean a class action suit and a major shake up for the movie industry in general.

Gwyneth Paltrow has used this announcement to comment on the wage inequality between male and female actors, calling the disparity between the two "painful" during an interview with Variety. The actress uses her MCU co-star Robert Downey Jr. - who made a whopping $80 million this year despite having only made one movie - as an example.

“Your salary is a way to quantify what you’re worth. If men are being paid a lot more for doing the same thing, it feels s***y. Look, nobody is worth the money that Robert Downey Jr. is worth. But if I told you the disparity, you would probably be surprised.”

Obviously Downey Jr. has a much bigger role than Paltrow does in the Iron Man movies, but there's evidence of wage inequality everywhere you look. For example, Jennifer Lawrence was this year's highest paid actress, but still made a hefty $28 million less than RDJ.

What do you guys make of Paltrow's comments? More at the link below.

Pay in Hollywood is based on your current popularity, demand and hold the actor has its nothing to do with discrimination. How would a hollywood wage even be quantified should everyone in a film make the same amount despite their role size or fame etc. its not like a regular job where everyone is paid in accordance to their job and position they hold

LOL.. If you want to compare what good actors make compared to decent actors thats one thing, but RDJR is high demand and on top of the world right meow. Paltrow is replaceable in every role. I think she just wishes she was still a big deal. I would say Scar Jo, Angelina Jolie, Charleze Theron, Emily Blunt and more current actresses could probably make about the same if not more as the non super star actors.
besides Bill Burr said it best...

RDJ makes so much money off ONE franchise. I'm not sure you can say its popularity when that popularity doesn't get him major roles in other big films. At least Jennifer Lawrence headlines two big franchises. RDJ isn't worth much outside of Marvel it seems.

Question:
What makes RDJ worth all of this money other than the fact that he's likable?

People are worth only as much as what they will accept.

Would be interesting to see how the penalty for this would be implemented.

Are people wrong for paying guys like RDJ too much or for paying people like JLaw what too little?

5%? Ouch. Hard to imagine such a ridiculously low number is anything but discrimination, maybe by the studios maybe not, but discrimination of some kind at some point on some level.

he was Sherlock Holmes for two films, so there's that. he probably does not want to be in other big films, he's pretty much settled for life thanks to Iron Man.

“I bargained with Life for a penny,
And Life would pay no more,
However I begged at evening
When I counted my scanty store;

For Life is just an employer,
He gives you what you ask,
But once you have set the wages,
Why, you must bear the task.

I worked for a menial's hire,
Only to learn, dismayed,
That any wage I had asked of Life,
Life would have paid.”

Seriously guys, is it so hard to see that women in hollywood are seriously undervalued, underused, and are exposed to all sorts of sexist shit? ...much like the stream of garbage on this thread.

There's no such thing as having too much money. I applaud RDJ for reaping every last dollar he can.

The highest paid actress making 28 million less than the highest paid actor is concerning. Specially when you consider the number of movies each one made.

I do think we need more female talent helming big projects. We're not quite there is regards to gender equality. In the same way we're not quite there for equality with minorities.

In general, it would be nice if we could grow to a point where we consider others.

Sigh... One profession women make less, let's lose our marbles.
Sheesh
Women aren't as big stars as the male actors, that's how it is. Women didn't have to sign up for the draft, that's the way it is
Not everything is gonna be equal

I get what she is saying and agree witH her, especially since i am a woman and suffer from this in my job.

That said, in IM, both Terrence and her were top billed and were payed multiple millions of dollars for their tinier role, while the lead, RDJ was payed $500 thousands.

I don't recall her using the same rethoric to expose that unfairness towards RDJ who was clearly underpaid compared to her and Howard.

Who cares money is a personal issue. And people are going to pay you your worth. I'm I think they should all shut up and count there millions some more and be happy they don't look forward to your next paycheck 2 days after you got your last because you had to pay bills and get speghettios. Oh no that millionaire made more millions then me. #1%problems

@BlackestKnight Women make 75% what men do across the board. There are technically laws that protect women from this inequality, but "don't talk about your salary with co-workers" rules squash the culture of accountability. Furthermore there was a statue of limitations on EEO claims until the Lillyledbetter Act from 08.

Scratching my head at the idea that women make more in some fields. Like what?
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 10/7/2015, 7:33 AM
RDJ wasn't the best example for her to use because he made a deal that involved a cut of the movie profits, but it's a well known fact that men make more than women in Hollywood in general... you'd have to be a halfwit to dispute it.
