Simon Kinberg Discusses The "Disappointing" FANTASTIC FOUR Reboot

We've heard from various other parties that were involved with bringing Josh Trank's Fantastic Four reboot to the screen, and now the movie's screenwriter/executive producer Simon Kinberg shares his thoughts, and ponders what went wrong with the Marvel adaptation...

Is it fair to say nobody liked Josh Trank's Fantastic Four reboot? Obviously some disliked it more than others, and many felt it had its share of redeeming features, but you'd be hard pushed to find anyone who would argue that it was completely successful... and that includes the movie's writer and EP, Simon Kinberg.

In an interview with THR, Kinberg was asked to outline where he felt things went wrong with the production, and began by stating that he didn't believe there was "a direct correlation between the process and the product", and that he'd worked on troubled shoots where the film turned out great, and easy, joyous shoots that yielded a finished product that was lacking.

"I haven't really done a full diagnosis. It was a hard movie to make, but I've made a lot of hard movies. I do think that there is a great Fantastic Four movie with that cast. But there's so many different elements that need to come together perfectly. It's like a collaboration between all these strangers. And if there's a few things that don't go right, it's hard to recover from. I went straight from that into X-Men: Apocalypse. I haven't had a lot of time to decompress. I'm obviously disappointed with the way it turned out."

And what about that widely publicized Tweet from the movie's director? Does Kinberg feel Trank's rant against the studio's interference wound up hurting Fantastic Four's performance at the box office?

"Honestly, I have no idea. I've had other movies not work before. For whatever reason, that movie not working became very public — and that was hard because you put a lot of time and effort and love into everything you do, and I really love a lot of people on that film and felt really close to the actors. Those are the guys whose faces are on the poster and are the most exposed. I hope we get to make more movies with them. But it was disappointing."

What do you guys think - could anything have been done to salvage the film? Will you be revisiting and reevaluating Fantastic Four when it hits home release? More at the link below.

I'm not even going to comment about this garbage. Did anyone notice the Jordan Easter egg in Arrow?

I was one who felt the casting was really odd for this film and have never been a Trank fan. I hope this franchise and cast just goes away. Reboot it six to 10 years from now...under the watch of Marvel Studios..

You defended, but at least you weren't like some of the pee-ons who attacked people who had some concerns regarding the film.

I won't name any names but....

I'm sorry but the cast just wasn't working. They are all good actors but none of them are likeable. None of them are people who would feel like they would be your hero, or someone you would look up to, or even go to have coffee with. It's a good cast that would have worked great for a indie or drama, but not a superhero film. None of them had the "hero" charm.

@killemall you mean the guy in the jacket that said Jordan front and center of the camera? Yea that was cool. Can they stop teasing us and get on with it?

If Kinberg really did direct those reshoots, then the destruction of FF is all on him. From what I could tell, Trank's vision was complete and adult, and Kinberg tried (probably under studio orders) to twist it into a silly children's film.

I am really starting to believe that the rights are going back to Marvel . Only a complete moron would throw away another hundred million dollars on something we all know is not going to work . No matter what they say , I really don't think they have the balls to loose another 100 million dollars .

It's simple why this movie was a massive flop- there was no passion for the Fantastic 4. FOX just wanted the big bucks and threw a shitty film out there because superhero movies are the big thing now.

Anyway, let's just forget about this shithole and look forward. I'm just stoked that we have Marvel Studios and Warner Brothers to bring great movies/shows with all of our favourite characters. We have an awesome few years ahead of us...

The first half of the movie wasn't bad. What gets me about this movie is they obviously filmed some other action shots and did the cgi work on it cause it was in the trailers but not put them in the movie? If the studio took away 3 big action scenes and cut the budget before filming started then how could trank have filmed at least one other action scene but not have it in the movie? Overall I don't know if it's worse than green lantern or superman returns but on the bright side it was the best fantastic four movie we've seen yet. Which is not saying much.

@GareBear Yeah buddy, I was super geeked. I just wish they would quit relying on the flashback plot device. I was shocked they went and did a time jump.

They somehow managed to run this movie into the ground so effectively that its domestic total didn't manage to beat the Story movies' respective opening weekends.

I mean, that's almost impressive in way! :O

It would've been an awesome pilot for a tv series... one which would've had nothing to do with the Fantastic 4. I don't know, Misfits of Science reboot on Netflix or somehting.
