Paul Reubens Will Play The Father Of 'The Penguin' On GOTHAM
If that headline rings a bell, it's because Reubens - better known as Pee-wee Herman - already played the Penguin's poppa in Tim Burton's Batman Returns. The announcement was made by Robin Lord Taylor the Warner Bros. New York Comic Con panel...
It seems Paul Reubens/Pee-wee Herman will once again play The Penguin's father after initially appearing as a different incarnation of the character in Batman Returns back in 1992. Though we don't have any details on when or how he'll be introduced, he will play the man who sired Robin Lord Taylor's highly unstable Oswald Cobblepot at some point on season 2 of Fox's Gotham.
The news broke during Warner Bros.' Television Takeover panel, when Taylor revealed:
“We just found out that I do have a father and he will be showing up very soon, and he will be played by none other than Paul Reubens! Pee-wee Herman is playing my dad! What the hell! Oh my god!”
It's a fun nod to Burton's Batman sequel, in which Reubens' Tucker Cobblepot and his wife decide to throw a baby Penguin into the river rather than raise the evil little shit. Obviously Penguin has a very different relationship with his mother Gertrude (Carol Kane) on the show, so it should be interesting to see how Mr. Cobblepot factors into things.
Gotham returns with a brand new episode tonight.
