To put this in perspective, the previous single-day advanced sales box office record for IMAX screenings of any movie was $1 million; and Star Wars: The Force Awakens raked in over $6 million.
The tickets went on sale around the same time the trailer debuted, and the demand was so high that the likes of IMAX, Fandango and Movietickets.com buckled under the pressure - but, Fandango managed to confirm the new pre-sales record, with the J.J. Abrams directed Star Wars flick beating the previous record holder, the first Hunger Games.
“The only words to describe the first day of IMAX worldwide advance ticket sales for Star Wars: The Force Awakens are 'record-shattering'," said Greg Foster, senior executive VP, IMAX Corp. and CEO of IMAX Entertainment. “We’re seeing sell-outs across the board - from Hollywood to London, to Sparks, Nevada, and everywhere in between."
Impressive. Most impressive. Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in theaters December 18, 2015.
