Check Out 15 Mins Of Deleted Scenes From The R-Rated Cut Of THE HOBBIT: TBOTFA

The final movie in The Hobbit trilogy hits home release in the UK on November 23, and you get a look at some of the convoluted CGI carnage that (mercifully) wound up on the cutting room floor right here. Be warned, the blood 'n guts quota has been upped considerably...

I should point out that I actually enjoyed The Hobbit trilogy quite a bit, but I also agree with the detractors on several points - the main one being that Jackson went far too overboard with the CGI and silly, physics-defying battle scenes. Thank Sauron then, that the following 15 minutes or so was cut from the theatrical release.

Ever wondered what happened to that cowardly little shit Alfrid after he escaped with the gold? Turns out he inadvertently saved Gandalf from a troll by launching himself down its throat. Yes, really.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town. Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin sacrifices friendship and honor to hoard it as Bilbo’s frantic attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. But there are even greater dangers ahead. Unseen by any but the Wizard Gandalf, the great enemy Sauron has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain. As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide – unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends in the epic Battle of the Five Armies, as the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.

I love the LOTR: Extended Editions. THE HOBBIT: EEs feel like unedited dailies.

I know there are already unofficial short edits out there, but it would be wonderful if Peter Jackson manned-up to his mistake of excess and released his own official truncated version -- like the two movie version he originally planned.

God, this movie was stupid. I actually enjoy the added footage - it's a return to the gleefully excessive Peter Jackson of the Braindead days. But really, this whole trilogy was such a mess tonally and narratively that it was almost unwatchable. If only Guillermo del Toro had gotten his shot at it.

The Hobbit Trilogy = Star Wars Prequel Trilogy
Both are prequels to really great franchises that were absolutely groundbreaking.
Both have way too much CGI effects and green screened backgrounds.
Both had video-game-like battles that didn't make sense despite it's fantay/scifi setting.

However, The Hobbit Trilogy at least was better acted despite being not always written the best. I actually love the Hobbit trilogy despite all its faults and I can stomach the Star Wars prequels for the tid-bits of good they have in them (very few).

Having sat through Pacific Rim, I'm actually glad Del Toro passed.

Earthbound, agreed. Say what you want about the Hobbit movies but they featured a lot of great performances, and actually did manage to pull of a few genuinely powerful moments too. Plus, Smaug was awesome.

Good films, not great. The first one is fun and I think closest to being on par with LOTR. I loved the dwarves, Bilbo and Radaghast. The rest felt hollow and the ridiculous battle scenes were nearly all as bad as that one scene of Legolas jumping onto the horse in The Two Towers during th Warg attack....jesus Peter, did that really look good to you?

LotR was "one" of my favorite movies of all time. Simply amazing! But I'm sorry, the Hobbit films were god-awful. The Hobbit was a children's book; but even in the theater version, there were more decapitations than one can count.

JRR has been rotating in the grave..

Only one way to redeem all this.. Do the Silmarillion, and do it right!

I unapologetically love The Hobbit trilogy. Do I think its better than LoTR? Nah. But I love the performances, and think in general they are more fun. I get to go on an adventure whether I'm watching Hobbit or LoTR. I think the biggest difference is each of the LOTR movies stand fine on their own, and the Hobbit is MUCH better to watch in one long go. Although I personally love Desolation to death.

I agree they could have used less CGI but I really enjoyed all three movies. i wish they had kept some of those scenes of the dwarves helping each other fight the orcs, or even Bain's army vs the elves, with improved CGI of course. I think it would have made the movie even more interesting. It was a bit disappointing in the final cut, when they were about to fight and then stopped.

I'm glad they removed that scene with the giant white creature that Legolas later killed tho. How the hell does it even balance itself while walking?

The dodgy CGI is not even really the biggest issue for me, it's the overly complicated, silly, physics defying set pieces that Jackson clearly thinks are exciting, but wind up just taking me out of the film completely. Even fantasy movies need to have some basis in the reality that's been created for them, and all of the dwarves landing oh so conveniently on ledges, and each other, and narrowly missing stuff, and Bofur riding the ficking Troll etc....ugh.

Now I know why that scene felt like it was lacking.

A lot was hacked out of it.

They need to consult with this guy before they even attempt to do any potentially physic defying action sequences.

These movies are awesome. I dont wanna hear people's complaints about "too much added" or "these movies are too long".

These movies are fun, well acted, and expand the material beyond that which we received in the books. The hate is unnecessary.

There might've been a good chance of me accepting or even enjoying certain parts of the movies very much that I now hate if Jackson had put them in a different movie. But as an adaptation of The Hobbit and a prequel to the LotR trilogy so many things plain suck. And [frick]ing Alfrid would've been a bad idea always, anytime, anywhere.

Looking back now I remember how I left AUJ with mixed feelings, but quite a bit hope for the rest of the trilogy. Little did I know. It'd take a lot of time to fully explain the depth of my contempt for DOS and TBOTFA, and this EE seems to be a worthy last piece to this irritating puzzle.

I drastically lowered my expectations after each movie, and each time they managed to spectacularly fail to meet them. After AUJ it really felt like they actively tried to make the movies in a way I would despise. They succeeded at that, at least.

Now I'm not saying everything about the movies is shit, because it's not. There are some solid performances, and each movie has some individual moments I really enjoyed. And as I said, some of the elements (mainly the ridiculous action scenes) I probably would've applauded were they put in an original movie.

Also I'm genuinely happy for everyone who liked or loved the movies! That's totally cool, I just so wish I could've felt the same. :)

There was definitely no room for the 1 1/2 minutes of the funeral in the theatrical cut. I get why some people thought it should've been there, but clearly it would've totally destroyed the pacing and structure of the intricate and complex piece of filmmaking that TBOTFA was.

[frick] you so much, Hobbit movies! >:(

@Asapjoker You have to understand, in the source material, elves are lighter than a feather. That's why they never leave footprints in the snow. I suppose that's why that horrendous scene is somewhat plausible

Well, here I go, making more lifelong enemies. But, hey, there are worse things than being despised, right? The LotR films go progressively downhill, IMO. "Two Towers"? A comedown from "Fellowship". "RotK? It's just a mess. The end battle, which is FULL of awful CGI (in example, the Legolas sequence) is a total rip-off. Aragorn, even in the extended version, does next to nothing. He even needs Gimli's help to kill Gothmog, whose only real claim to fame is looking like the Toxic Avenger. Eowyn dominates EVERYTHING.
Suddenly, she's Xenia, or Red Sonja. Her only personality trait seems to be constantly pissed off (maybe that's what Faramir likes?)The "Hobbit" trilogy
just gets better. The 2nd better than the first and TBo5A is the best of the
three. In fact, for me, it's the best thing Jackson's done since "Fellowship..."! The extended battle looks even better, dividing the heroics evenly between ALL the leads, something else RotK failed to do. I could go on with ENDLESS more examples, but I figure I've got a big enough mob forming against me now as it is.

@SpunkKing

You, sir, and I are now mortal enemies! >:(

Nah, seriously, it's totally cool to feel the way you do. You liking or disliking different things as me is no reason at all to think badly about you or anything. Also you need to religiously follow and support either Marvel or DC to really get into the juicy CBM petty fighting. ^^

Besides all that, I even agree with parts of what you wrote. Looking back over all of Jackson's Middle-earth movies I can't say that I don't think Fellowship was the overall best. Still the whole LOTR trilogy is very close to my heart, and was something of an unprecedented cinematic experience for younger me. Complete disagreement on the Hobbit movies though. They started out okay-ish and descended into a completely botched, horrible mess. Buuut as I said, that's my opinion, and I don't begrudge other people theirs.

Let me finish with a slightly belated welcome to this site, hope you have a good time here! And make up your mind about that DC/Marvel thing. ;)
