STAR WARS: TFA Home Release Will Include Deleted Scenes, But No Extended Cut

Fans anticipating an extended cut of Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Blu-ray and DVD are in for some disappointment, as director J.J. Abrams has confirmed that although there will be deleted scenes, they will not be added into the movie itself. More details past the jump...

As awesome as Star Wars: The Force Awakens was, there was quite a bit of stuff that went unexplained, and fans were looking forward to possibly seeing certain elements fleshed out a bit in an extended cut. Unfortunately, that's not on the cards.

"There will be deleted scenes, but not an extended version," Abrams revealed to EW following his panel for his upcoming Hulu series 11.22.63 at the Television Critics Association’s press tour in Beverly Hills. The theatrical cut of the film came in at 2 hours and 16 minutes, but as we've previously heard there was a much longer cut at one point. The site also asked Abrams what the longest cut was and he said with credits it would have been about 2 hours and 50 minutes. It's a real shame we'll probably never get to see that, but deleted scenes are better than nothing at the end of the day.

Abrams was also asked what excited him most about Rian Johnson's script for the still untitled Episode VIII, and said the following. “I wouldn’t want to do that because it’s not my movie to talk about, but I will say that Ryan’s an amazing writer and director. I’m obviously really excited about what he’s going to do.”

Are you disappointed about the lack of an extended version, or are you happy enough with the deleted content? Sound off below.

I think Star Wars is one of those instances where it's best not to have alternate and extended cuts. It's such a long running series already that if they suddenly started doing that it'd start making them harder to follow, and possibly screw with the continuity more than George Lucas has done since the '90s.

Plus it's always possible that at least some of that stuff was cut because it could have conflicted with plans for future installments, so keeping it at the length that they did (think it's still the longest so far in the series) also frees them up to explore as many different directions as they need to while they make more.

That's not really the Disney or Star Wars way, is it?

I'm still annoyed that my compulsive need for meticulous organization of my movie collection means that I won't be getting this on home media until Episode IX is released and I can get a sequel trilogy box set. Hopefully Disney and/or Fox (depending on where the legal rights lie) can placate me by releasing a remastered (audiovisual clean ups only) but otherwise untouched blu ray box set of the Original trilogy's theatrical cut?

I imagine at some point they'll release an extended version. They wouldn't just give it to people now when they can make much more money off releasing it later.

I hope Episode VIII is longer, Abrams' style is too breathless, there's not enough quiet or slow moments. Maybe Rian Johnson can add a little more nuance to the story....don't get me wrong, The Force Awakens was good, but a more extended movie in general wouldn't hurt. The fast-paced action vibe can only carry the franchise so far, even the rebooted Star Trek is losing its luster a little bit because of it.

Re-release an extended version in cinemas a few months before episode 8 is out.

And then boom, over 2.7 billions grossed.

It wouldn't matter to me if they kept the whole damn thing. This trilogy is getting to be a complete waste of time. And with no one person in charge it'll only get worse.

The extended version once they release the trilogy box set.So were looking at at least four or five years, maybe longer.I have a feeling that if or when they release extended cuts is that all of the extra scenes could very well change the movies story. They will for sure alter what we know about each of the characters.

I was COMPLETELY disappointed by the film and its unoriginal story. I don't want to see any more footage. I've had enough. Hopefully Rian Johnson will take a more creative and daring approach with his film.

I just hope all of the inbred morons, who thought they were accomplishing something with the pussy spoilers, enjoy having accomplished absolutely nothing (besides reminding everyone how worthless they are).

Everything that isn't explained in the film isn't automatically a deleted scene. You can tell what's deliberately vague for the further story. The deleted scenes will be things that don't move the story along. Like deleted scenes usually are.
