DEADPOOL Has Been Banned In China For Its Graphic Content

Fans were delighted when 20th Century Fox decided to bite the bullet and give Deadpool the R rated treatment, but it's a decision that may cost the studio some potentially huge box office earnings in China, where the film has been banned outright. More past the jump...

Pretty much every fan of the Merc with A Mouth agreed that the character's solo big-screen outing would benefit immensely from an R rating, so when it was made official the other day, we all rejoiced. The MPPA rated the movie R for "strong violence and language throughout, sexual content and graphic nudity," which all sounds awesome... unless you happen to be China.

According to THR, Tim Miller's Deadpool has been denied permission to screen in the Country, which is the world's second-largest movie market. Though China has no rating system for movies, their media regulator, the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT), views all film imports and either approves or bans them outright. Usually the censors will work with the studios to make the appropriate cuts but apparently in this case "it wasn't possible to excise the offending material without causing plot problems."

Comic book movies tend to do huge business in China, so this could turn out to be a major blow to Deadpool's global box office haul. Anyway, the rest of us can enjoy Wade Wilson's R rated shenanigans when the movie hits theatres on February 12.

ouch! it will definitely hurt the international box office revenue for this movie. hope it will do better locally in the US, and in other countries, so that it will warrant a sequel or another movie appearance for Deadpool. Let's admit it, besides comic fanboys and cosplayers, Deadpool isn't that popular outside the US and isn't really that well known by the general public.. That R rating will also make it even harder to put butts in seats.

I am in the wrong profession, I should have become an actor. sure, it is just a scene in a movie, but that doesn't change the fact that he is holding Morena Baccarin up by her ass with her crotch against him while she isn't wearing any panties....AND....he is getting paid to do it...actors got it made

On one hand this makes me worry about future small budget, potentially great CBMs being neutered for the sake of the dollar, but then on the other hand, let's face it, they're already doing it with big budget ones (I'm looking at you, Iron Man 3 and Transformers: Sell Out Of The Moon) and small ones don't really need to make up the dough to cover costs.

And anyway, I live in Australia, so (at least in the short term) what do I care? Stiff shit, China - sucks to be you!!!

This is exactly what I expected from this movie: "it wasn't possible to excise the offending material without causing plot problems."

Deadpool is a very nerdish product. Outside of the nerd world, it will be divisive because that type of humour, graphic content and gore doesn't translate the same way everywhere.

It will collide with different sensitibilities and different cultural perception.

Add the dubbed version and you have a product that could potentially hurt certain ears and eyes from the general audience who will go to the theater thinking they will get the 'traditional' edgy CB character or a little over the top like GOTG but will get A graphic more that he/she can handle type of character instead.

Mayny people go to the theater on a vague idea of what the movie will be and with Deadpool, you better know beforehand what type of exact product you will receive.

To me it's a niche property.

Hey, I totally dig Deadpool's unabashed hilarity and appreciate the essence of the guy, but I too, have certain standards and won't be seeing the movie myself. Can't argue with China on this one, though I be in a very small minority in this.

I don't think this means it'll flop, but you have to think it will severely hinder its full BO potential.

Lmao, I love how everyone is so dependent on China for B.O draw, like seriously guys.

1. Deadpool is guaranteed success here in America and in also other countries.
- NOPE. Here in the Philippines, which is mostly influenced by western culture, Deadpool is almost virtually an unknown property and comicbook character

2. Deadpool is very transcendent through pop-culture, meaning North America, South America, Europe, Canada, China is a loss yes, but its not an entirely a big one either due to other countries displaying the movie.
- NOPE.same reason as the above

3. The movie is low-budget considering other comic book films that have ballooned to 150-300 million in just production budget alone, this does not even include marketing. Meaning it just costs probably 100 million for the whole production & marketing and other fees, so all the movie needs to do to make a huge profit, is just 150 million worldwide, and it already has success.

- Yeah, but it's an R rated movie, isn't it? So the demographic or target audience became much SMALLER. If it's a PG or G rated movie, then we don't have anything to worry about when it comes to its revenue.

Please, stop depending on China for B.O. money, yes it is a huge winner for bigger blockbusters, but this is Valentines Day and its Deadpool. It will do fine.

- Chinese BO can help a movie big time, when it comes to generating much of its revenues. It can help this movie be a success, at least financially, even if we say the movie sucks hard, so it can warrant a sequel, or another movie appearance by deadpool. For an unknown character like deadpool, and for it's r rating, which cuts the target audience for this movie, which will result to a much smaller revenue, the chinese BO is definitely needed.

I also do not think it will flop but I dont think it will make a significant profit either.

The investment and marketing costs combined should be kept under $150M.
