George Lucas Admits That STAR WARS "Stood On The Shoulders" Of STAR TREK

In a brief snippet of an interview with Lucas for the upcoming documentary Trek Nation, the director discusses the influence and importance of Gene Roddenberry's sci-fi creation on his own space saga, and getting it accepted into the "entertainment arena".

These days the big fanboy debates (or wars in some cases) tend to stem from Marvel vs DC, but not so long ago it was all about the Stars..Wars VS Trek. Of course there are still those that champion their chosen franchise over the other, but since J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot many fans seem to have put aside the age old battle and admitted that there are merits to both. The upcoming documentary Trek Nation will delve into Rod Roddenberry’s journey to explore the importance of the legendary sci-fi franchise created by his father Gene, and Hero Complex have a brief interview with George Lucas, in which he talks about the influence those boldly going where no man has gone before had on his galaxy far far away.

“Star Trek softened up the entertainment arena so that Star Wars could come along and stand on its shoulders. There was an effective group of people in the beginning who accepted it..that it wasn't that far out. For the studios it was way far out, [they said] 'what is this?', but there was a fanbase out there -- primarily the Star Trek fanbase -- who understood sci-fi, understood visual sci-fi, and was ready for something like this (Star Wars) to be in the feature arena."

Has this reignited the debate? Sound off below, and click the link back to Hero Complex to see the video interview.

Interesting. It's kinda like Jor-el said. The son becomes the father and the father becomes the son.

Star Trek helped to make Star Wars possible, then Star Wars influenced JJ Abrams' take on Star Trek, which probably had a lot to do with the decision to get him to do the new Star Wars...

@Khan Funny...because other than both of them being villains, I see absolutely no similarities.

@HydraBob Khan first appeared in the Star Trek TV series in 1967.

Still like Star Wars more than Star Trek. But Star Trek is still great though.

I'm not saying what he said wasn't true! But mentioning both franchises together in any capacity seems to kick things off!

I love Star Wars because Luke's was the story of me in a completely different universe fighting against evil in a classical good versus evil/ sci-fi way. I love Star Trek because it is a glimpse of me working with others to explore this universe that we share.

Star Wars is loved by my selfish adventurous part of being human. Star Trek is loved by my hope for humanity through venturing beyond our solar system.

Sorry, but Return of the Jedi was the beginning of the end when it came to Lucas selling out for toy sales. Revenge of the Sith is a better film then Jedi and has nothing as cring worthy as Ewoks and that stupid song at the end of the original version.
