EXCLUSIVE: Captain America Director Joe Johnston — One Question/One Answer

In what has become an occasional series of quickie interviews, Earth's Mightiest editor Edward Gross has been able to engage Captain America director Joe Johnston in a number of one question/one answer sessions. But this time, we're not even going to make you click over to EM to check out the results.

EARTH'S MIGHTIEST: Obviously there has been a concentrated effort to tie the various Marvel films together, whether it be Nick Fury in Iron Man, Tony Stark in the Hulk, or Thor's hammer in Iron Man 2. Will that be the case with Captain America as well?

JOE JOHNSTON: There are links between all the MARVEL films, mostly ones that only the fans will pick up on. We have several subtle references to certain elements in THOR, but since CAPTAIN AMERICA is a period picture taking place in the 40's, there are fewer opportunities for contemporary links to the rest of the MARVEL universe. We can, however, create events in our story that will be paid off in AVENGERS and other MARVEL pictures.

There are so many great, talented actors in this film that it almost seems impossible to make it bad. However, I'm still not sold on Joe Johnston directing it, but I hope he will succeed in making this the most epic of Marvel films so far.

Thanks for posting this @Ed!

Because despite your poopooing, they're using Ultimate Fury.

Sounds interesting. I bet they'll have Red Skull trying to use some Norse technology or something.

3.on board the shield hellicarrier, captain america gets introduced to thor & iron man.

4.a complete avengers line up on show for the first time.

just one question for mr. johnston, are you planning to horribly devastate & foul up this movie by refusing to add the wings on captain america's mask thereby screwing up the classic icon image of him that every fan or no fan of comic books is able to recognize and identify him as captain america?

According to earlier reports on the test footage shown at Comicon, the reel had possible shots of the Cosmic Cube and a tomb.

Defender: Jonston hinted that the USO stage show in the movie will have him in the traditional-classic Cap' costume with the head wings and then it gets the Ultimates combat suit update with a military helmet without them later. So, if that's true, hopefully you'll be happy. To me, 'headwings' seem extremely silly on a World War 2 army (if that's the branch he's in) combat uniform.

I was pissed, because for a day or so the Thor footage was leaked all across the world, but I couldn't find the Cap one!

I know Fox has the rights for Wolverine, but maybe they could just put a little easter egg somewhere in the movie or just a little something about Wolverine, that would be awesome.

@LEEE: I thought Fury and Widow also use the (or variant of the) super soldier serum, at least to some extent, that they don't get old. Is this a rumor or something? I thought I read that somewhere.

@ED: Good interview. Despite what people think, I like Johnston's work. So, I'm very much hyped for this. I just don't know why they have to get rid of the wings, tho'. I mean, what could some little wings do to harm the entire image of Cap? Or the entire movie? While to the contrary, keeping them would make the fans happy.
