Zachary Quinto Talks STAR TREK 3

Roberto Orci may be hedging his bets on directing Star Trek 3, but with J.J. Abrams departing for Star Wars, Orci is definitely the lead creative on the project as evidence by this Zachary Quinto interview.

At the 2014 Summer TCA's to promote his Starz television series The Chair, actor Zachary Quinto also touched on Star Trek 3. Said Quinto, "I think the five-year mission will be a part of this next film in some way. We're coming up on the 50th anniversary of one of the most iconic sci-fi series in entertainment history, so it's inherently an ongoing story. But I do think that we'll feel some sense of evolution in these characters that's been building through the first few films." For those not up to date on their Star Trek lore, the five-year mission Quinto is referencing harkens back to this classic line from William Shatner. "

"Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before." --James T. Kirk

In short, Starfleet starships in the 23rd century were often given five-year missions to explore the deep reaches of space. This is an aspect that has mostly been absent from the first two films in the new trilogy. According to Quinto, this is an element that Orci wants to reinforce moving forward. "Bob [Orci] is definitely sort of a purist about the Trek universe," said Quinto. He continued, "I've spoken to him a number of times about his ideas and they're really exciting and I'm really excited that we get to be a part of his feature directorial debut. It'll be a different world without J.J. [Abrams] on set every day, but this is a family and Bob is an essential part of that family and we're all really excited to see where it goes. The script is being tightened and polished and finished and I imagine that the phone will be ringing in the next few months to see when we'll go back into production."

Star Trek Into Darkness earned $467.3M USD on an estimated $190M USD production budget.

Quinto was great in American Horror Story season 2. He was good in season 1 but his portrayal of his gay character was inconsistent as hell. I would think a gay guy could play a gay guy better.

In Abrams Dumberverse Trek he was totally wasted in material that was simplistic and meaningless.

I wish they actually went where no man had gone before, rather than going over old ground.

It's okay. I use diversionary tactics: I leave a Hot Pocket out in the open, along with a copy of The Wrath of Khan, signed by the cast. When they go for it, I beat them to death with a toy lightsaber.

McGee - 7/12/2014, 1:18 AM
@loki668

That's nice that you would beat them to death. If you left them alive...the humiliating dishonor of being beaten by a lightsaber would force them to either live their pathetic life in even more shame, or commit seppuku.

They would kill themselves with a $200 dollar Klingon sword replica they got at a convention (it would have to be authenticated with a certificate for the ritual suicide to be acknowledged by Paramount as official), or as the Trekkies call it, a Klingon Bat'LETH!!!

@McGee It's very simple, Quinto is a magnificent actor. But one would'nt know that by watching him play Spock in the horribly written Dumb Trek. Obviously the role of Mr. Spock is beneath him. It's like a pro playing sports in a children's league.

I have to say though the very best Trek ever was Star Trek The Next Generation from season 3-7. And during that time there was some great writing that was worthy of great actors.

But Abram's Trek has the most juvenile writing of all Trek. Great actors have no business being a part of it.

Too bad he has not been a part of American Horror Story since season 2. The show provides actors with real parts to play. Cable TV series is where the most artistically challenging acting opportunities are right now. If Quinto keeps doing films then his best roles are likely behind him.

He may never again have such a great part to play as Dr. Oliver Thredson in season 2 of AHS.

I thought the original series had the best drama and suspense, The Next Generation was the most intelligent, and Deep Space Nine also had both in spades in terms of drama and intelligence.

DS9 was the best of both worlds of TOS and TNG.

@loki668

I don't need appeasing.

I enjoyed the first one, the second one (another revenge flick) seemed redundant and just a poor version of Wrath of Khan that got more wrong than right.

I don't see a need for a third unless they do something very different because the direction they're going in seems unoriginal and has barely anything to do with exploration of both space and new material.

So I'm a fan that is giving Nu-Trek a chance but I am by no means obligated to enjoy whatever the hell Hollywood scrambles together simply because its a 'Star Trek movie' so I should shut up no matter the quality.

There's been no fan appeasement so far anyway, they're changing and recreating whatever they choose, so I don't expect Star Trek 3 to be a fan olive branch.

I absolutely agree. DS9 is my favorite Trek series.

@Humperdink

I know. That film was very divisive for fans. So much so, that it's one of the few games of "poke the bear" that is actually fun and rewarding:) Into Darkness will always have the shadow of "Wrath of Khan" hanging over it. To me, they're both good films with different stories but the backlash from some fans was a little shocking. Don't mind me! Just causing ye olde mischief wherever I go!

I agree. DS9 was AWESOME!! I actually preferred TNG to TOS. I even enjoyed Voyager, as well (don't hate!). I enjoyed Enterprise and wished that it had stayed around longer.
ManDeth
ManDeth - 7/12/2014, 2:35 AM
@McGee DS9 had more space battles than other Trek series but there was no one in that cast on the level of Stewart and Spiner. And TNG had some very intriguing mystery elements woven into their stories.
The show had some really great explorations of character and created some great characters the other shows had to borrow.

DS9 rarely took Trek anywhere it hadn't gone before. And often times it was low key and virtually silent and had a very dull lead with Avery Brooks.

The original series was great but after season 2 it was a nightmare. Ex writers said it was Shatner and Nimoy placing constraints on them due to their competition with each other that hurt the writing.

Voyager had enormous potential but it was screwed over by a producer and network that sucked. It became even worse when Jeri Ryan dated/screwed Braga for job security and more screen time.

For me...this is Star Trek at its very best:

The first two seasons of Enterprise were extremely painful to watch (I didn't even really finish the second season) with its recycled blandness. The third season was good. The fourth season was awesome. The show had finally gotten its motor running...aaaand it got cancelled.
loki668
loki668 - 7/12/2014, 2:46 AM
Yeah. They let Enterprise find its legs, just in time to rip the carpet out from under it.

My order of preference:

TNG
DS9
Voyager
Enterprise
TOS

For me, it was:

TOS and DS9 tied at No.1 (so you can imagine how much I enjoyed Trials and Tribble-lations).

TNG

Enterprise

Voyager (Neelix was f*cking annoying and the entire series wasted a brilliant premise by having the Maquis crew integrate so easily with Voyager's crew right from the start)

I started with TOS and followed with TNG. I thought both were amazing. Season 3 of TOS was a bit weaker though. I haven't watched any DS9, Voyager, or Enterprise.

I really enjoyed the past two movies, but I think the biggest problem with them is that, for the first time, there is no series that corresponds with the films. In all the other movies, there had been a series to build the up characters, and allowed the actors to earn our admiration as those characters. While the current characters are familiar, they are different than in TOS, and the franchise would benefit from having a series to explore that in more depth. Hopefully, that is what the aim will be if they take this "five year mission" thing seriously, and start a series after ST3.

Thank god I hate Star Trek. It enabled me to LOVE both movies. Into Darkness was brilliant, and Cumberbatch showed why he is such a sought after actor.

I may be committing Canadian suicide, but Shatner is arguably the worst actor I've ever seen. Thank god for Chris Pine, he has made Kirk a thrilling character, and the lack of pause-acting is a breath of fresh air.

Love Star Trek and always will. It was at times superlatively brilliant and at times every bit as dumb as hell.

Can't live without TOS or TNG.
never got into DS9 but I've heard it's excellent if you hang in for the long haul.
Liked enterprise but it was a little flat at times. The mirror universe ep started great then got retarded. The Borg episode was better than it deserved to be.

Hate voyager. Worthless. At its best its just a remake of TNG but with a feminist makeover.

Classic eps to watch if you're a newbie:

The doomsday machine
Mirror mirror
City on the edge of forever
The menegerie (a reworking of "the cage")

I have mixed feelings about jj Abrams trek. Sometimes I enjoy them - sometimes they annoy me. He went out of his way to dumb it down to almost bayformers level.
