Academy Awards For Comic Book Movies, Superhero Clint Eastwood Discussed By Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman Wolverine career

To promote the release of The Wolverine on blu-ray/dvd, Hugh Jackman spoke with the Daily Star in a lengthy Q&A covering a wide range of topics. One interesting subject broached was the question of whether comic book movies will ever be truly recognized by the Academy Awards. Said Jackman, "Heath Ledger won the Oscar for his portrayal so in many ways I think they are seeing it. I think more and more they are seeing the quality of filmmaking and the aspirations of filmmakers. I think the same about comedies. I always think that not enough of the academy members have actually tried to do a comedy, but heaven knows how hard that is to pull off. So when you get a great comedy — I thought Bridesmaids was going to win a whole load of stuff."

The conversation also turned to an interesting topic, the question of if Clint Eastwood were younger, would he be in a superhero movie given this current trend of blockbuster comic book movies. "He sort of had one with Dirty Harry, didn’t he, though he was human," said Jackman. He continued, "There weren’t many franchises around like that apart from James Bond. Probably. I remember shooting X-Men 1. It is fascinating how it’s changed. Bryan Singer would not allow one comic book on the set. He was terrified that actors would read them and come with over-the-top with two-dimensional performances. That was the perception of what comic books are, though X-Men is not like that at all. It is sophisticated in its themes and political in what it is trying to say. But that’s what Bryan worried about back then, so it is a very different world now. There was no genre when the first X-Men was made and you have to give credit to Bryan and to [20th Century] Fox for taking that risk."

And in terms of X-Men: Days of Future Past, Jackman commented on the growth he's seen in director Bryan Singer."All of us are different but essentially I see in him all that brilliance and confidence and then some," began Jackman. He continued, "It seems to me that he has made a lot of different movies. He has reached among the fan base a kind of iconic status because of what he has created. I think he is really enjoying the challenge of this film. I know it is a big challenge and he doesn’t take it lightly. He really is absolutely delivering. I think that this going to be right up there."

Dirty Harry was very much in the spirit of the classic Pulp Detective Heroes, just like Indiana Jones was for the Pulp Adventure Heroes.

Interesting he brings up Eastwood since Jackman has played Logan (aptly) as Eastwood with claws.

I love that he loves playing the character, same thing with RDJ. I never got that feeling from Bale, it seemed like Batman was just another role for him.

In my opinion Hugh Jackman is great as Wolverine. Even though some of the X men films havent been all that great Hugh Jackman does give it his best for the portrayal as Wolverine.

Also Eastwood would have been awesome as Wolverine back in the day. Now he could play Old Bruce Wayne if WB's ever decides to do a live action Batman Beyond film.

AnarkyInTheUSA - More like the Westerns on their way out when the first DIRTY HARRY came out. Gun-slinging sheriff out to shoot the bad guys, restore law & order, just replace horse with car.

i think marvel has something to do with breaking the mold of the old x-men movies. they came in with a fresh and more fun way of doing things and now theyre on top of the movie world with no signs of falling. singer must have seen(how could he not) that and decided to lighten up this time around. hopefully his transformation translates onto the big screen.

I have seen people mention Clint Eastwood being a good choice for Old Bruce Wayne in a Batman Beyond movie before and it's been mention a couple times again already on this thread. Let me throw my hat in the ring on that as well. Clint Eastwood would make a perfect old man Wayne in a Batman Beyond movie! Get to it WB!
Hey! Do you hear that WB? Cha-Ching! Cha-Ching! It's the sound of all that money your making because you made the Batman Beyond movie the fans told you they would pay to see! Cha-Ching!

Christian Bale asked for 20 minutes after Rises ended to just take it all in that he was done being Batman.

I think it shows more of how great he is leaving such a money making role.

i don't think we'll ever see a comic book movie win best picture oscar, unless its something like road to perdition or a history of violence.

ledger oscar was nothing more than he was young actor who died way before his time & it was a mark of respect to him & so his daughter had something nice to remember her father by.

Clint Eastwood is the perfect choice for an aged Bruce Wayne/Batman.

If either The Dark Knight Returns or Batman Beyond were to be adapted for the big screen, we need to look no further. Eastwood is the man for the job.

The only problem is that Eastwood is already 83 years old. So let's just hope that one of these films happens before he dies.

Who cares? Comic books don't win Pulitzer Prizes either but they're still awesome.

It's a really shitty move to disrespect the memory of the dead or trying to discredit the accomplishments of the accomplished for petty, selfish reasons. Kids these days have no respect...

Years ago, my friend Jason, would always fancast Eastwood for Wolverine. Guess he wasn't alone. I'd say 30 years ago and 60+ lbs. more muscle and he would have been a good candidate for Cable.
