Hayao Miyazaki Retiring From Anime For Samurai Manga

The legendary Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli may be retiring from anime films after The Wind Rises but he'll keep busy with a new samurai manga he's illustrating. Oh and he's doing it for free by the way.

If you're an anime fan, then you'll know the name Hayao Miyazaki of Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service and a whole host of other celebrated works. The 72-year-old director recently announced his retirement, making The Wind Rises his final anime movie. But he's not quietly riding off into the sunset. Miyazaki confirmed during his retirement tv special on Japanese television that he's begun work on a samurai manga set during Japan's Sengoku period or "Warring States Period". The manga will run in an unspecified magazine in Japan but I'm sure it will become serialized here in the States rather quickly. You can get a glimpse of Miyazaki's illustrations in the images below.

The Wind Rises will get a limited theatrical run here in the US starting February 21, 2014. Residents of New York and Los Angeles will get to see the film earlier on November 8.

Hayao Miyazaki! <3

Sad to see him retire from doing what he did so damn good, but it wasn't that big a surprise. The man did some truly amazing work over the years - all the best for his retirement and future plans! :D

Happy retirement M. Miazaki.
As far as I'm concerned the greatest graphic artist of the second half of the 20th century was Jean Giraud.
Giraud and Miazaki admired one another so we should pay our respects.

Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky, and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind were my personal favorites.

My goodness I can't believe he is already 72. Hopefully he learned Stan Lee's secret to longevity and stays around for many years yet.

Personally Porco Rosso is my favorite of Miyazaki.

I think this isthe best way to go out: on a high note; Other people stay around so long people get sick of their shtick and so it's always best to leave people wanting more, which is why Fawlty Towers is such a big success: it's only got 2 seasons but 2 well-made ones so people will rewatch it over and over again and I feel the same way about Studio Ghibli (and esp. Miyazaki's) films. What a great run it was :).

Spirited Away will always have a very special place in my heart, because of the movie itself and the circumstances under which I first watched. Castle in the Sky and Nausicaa I also fell in love with the first time I watched them.

One of my biggest surprises this year was watching Porco Rosso a second time after quite some years. First time I didn't care for it all that much, but this time I absolutely adored pretty much everything about it! <3

Such an awesome creator/artist! I remember hearing about his retirement several months ago actually. I was surprised to see it announced on here just now. Anyway, he will certainly be missed!
