Hugh Jackman On Ideas For THE WOLVERINE Sequel, Talks X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

"There are some really cool ideas that I’m dying to tell you, but that would be giving away a secret that is not even formed yet," says Hugh Jackman on his next Wolverine film with James Mangold. Jackman also briefly touches on Days of Future Past.

The Wolverine sequel

Talking to Entertainment Weekly to promote the release of The Wolverine on blu-ray and dvd, Hugh Jackman briefly touched on the recently announced sequel. "I did love the Japanese saga — it was one of the first ones I read while making [the first] X-Men, actually. I remember thinking, 'This would make a great movie.' … It’s interesting because it’s very rare, even with the Japanese saga, to make [a single story] into a film. You end up using one as a basis, then you’ll draw really cool things from others." I'm not sure most people around these parts would agree with you Hugh. As Jackman acknowledged, The Wolverine was really the first X-Men film to focus in on a single story rather than pick and pull from a number of storylines from the X-Men comics. The result, was one of the most lucrative and critically acclaimed X-Men films to date. The natural inclination should be for Fox to make that approach the blueprint. However, it sounds like Fox may be back to their old approach for The Wolverine sequel. "To make a movie, obviously you need to do more than just one comic. There are some really cool ideas [about The Wolverine sequel] that I’m dying to tell you, but that would be giving away a secret that is not even formed yet, you know what I mean?" Again, most would disagree with the idea that you need more than one story or idea from the comics to make a good superhero movie.

Elsewhere, USA Today also spoke with Jackman about The Wolverine and also touched on his role in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Speaking on the latter, Jackman shared, "[Wolverine's] less reluctant to help out and join in, but the stakes are definitely higher in this movie than ever before. He still occupies that same role as being devil's advocate with everybody. He just doesn't accept. He gets roped into having to do this mission that he's probably not the right person for but is the only one physically able to do it."

USA Today also has a clip from the blu-ray extras which takes a look at James Mangold and Jackman behind-the-scenes on The Wolverine.

The Wolverine extended version was great.Really interested to know what's installed for the sequel.

As for XMDOFP the movie better not have the main focus on Wolverine.

I really liked the Extended Cut. If they'd sell it seperately I'd likely have bought it by now, but since it's only available in the bundle with the 3D version of the theatrical cut at 25-30€ I won't.

Viper wasn't needed? True she wasn't the most thrilling villain of all time, but she was able to suppress Logan's healing ability until they figured out why he wasn't healing properly. That was something he had to struggle with and overcome.

@davideodus Yes!!! Bring on X-Force ASAP! I love Wolverine and actually enjoy Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, but I need a break from him to be honest. Give me Cable, Deadpool, Psylocke, etc.

Yeah, DoFP is going to be great I think, and hopefully it sets up Phase II of the FOX X-men franchise so that going forward we can get new threats, more badasses beyond just Wolverine, etc.

The Wolverine was ok.
I 'm still hoping, though, that some day we 'll get a different version by Marvel.
Anyway, i don't disagree with Hugh Jackman. I think that having a single story from a particular comic book as basis, and then fill it with various bits and peaces from other comic books, it has two advantages:
1st) by merging a serious number of notable stories from the superhero's entire life, means that you are able to flesh out almost the 100% of the superhero's caliber within three movies (trilogy).
and 2nd) you can set a consistent time frame through out the trilogy that the superhero can "live" and the audience can follow.

"the only one capable of doing it"

yeah, Hugh, Wolverine is GOD and the rest are crap, right?

on the comics many mutants time travel, same with tv shows and movie, but yet on X-Men franchise only Wolverine can do it?

Yeah, yeah

Why would anyone think its ok to have the video viewer play without me clicking on it? @$$hole(s).

Awful movie, could barely sit through it. DOFP doesnt look any better but what comes after may be of interest.

I honestly think they'll go the route of either...

-Picking up where Wolverine is left off in Days of Future Past and revisit Weapon X to get the story right.

-Wolvie going to Canada

-Modern Weapon X birth of (X-23)

-Daken

All I know is that the film is said to take place after The Wolverine and before X-Men: Days of Future Past. So that's the only reason why I'm a bit puzzled. :/ lol

What do you guys think?

@pointman Iron Man dominates Marvel in movie regards and nothing else. Go look at his comics, he isn't doing too hot. Iron Man is just currently riding a wave of popularity from RDJ, it remains to see if the character is actually popular enough to remain a star without Robert highlighting him.

If only the continuity was better in these films. Because in general, except for X-Men Origins: Wolverine and The Last Stand, all the other movies were pretty good and DoFP looks good so far too. And I'd also like less focus on Wolverine, more focus on Cyclops because they really hate Cyclops for a weird reason that only Bryan Singer knows.

@YoungThanos Your 100% right..their US box office numbers have been falling since x3..no one wants to hear it, but at 350m for DOFP that needs about 700 to be consider successful..that a HUGE number they will miss...im hope that plus the FF fan reaction will cause them to step back...start over with just a mutant filled universe, and let FF revert...

Not fond of the blatant, repetitive editorializing in this article. Just wanted to throw that out there.

I actually DO think you can craft a quality superhero movie from aspects of multiple comic book plots and storylines. Just look at X2-- it borrowed heavily from Weapon X and God Loves, Man Kills, and synthesized them into a fantastic film that stood on its own merits rather than copying another creator's work beat-for-beat.

The same goes for the entire Dark Knight trilogy (which borrowed from Batman: Year One, The Long Halloween, "The Man Who Falls", the first appearance of the Joker, Knightfall, No Man's Land, and The Dark Knight Returns, among others), Man of Steel (YEAH, I SAID IT; it borrowed a lot from John Byrne's Man of Steel and Superman: Birthright), and plenty of others that didn't feel the need to be beholden to a single comic storyline to tell a good story.

Yes, there were DEFINITELY some duds in there, too; Green Lantern borrowed from GL Rebirth and Emerald Dawn, but since those stories have radically different portrayals of Hal Jordan, the whole thing turned into a huge, confused mess. And let's not even get STARTED on Daredevil, which seemed intent on being a "Greatest Hits" of Man Without Fear storylines stapled together with no narrative cohesion. But that's not to say that sticking to adapting a single comic story is always a guaranteed winner-- Watchmen was a tonally misguided but nearly perfect adaptation of Alan Moore's work, and it was a pretty big letdown. Other than that, I can't think of too many direct adaptations in comic book cinema... I think most filmmakers don't like to be constrained by a single preexisting work if they have an entire, imaginative universe to play with.

So yeah, that's just my two cents.
