Could The PACIFIC RIM Sequel Actually Be A Prequel?

Will the Pacific Rim sequel currently being developed by Guillermo del Toro pickup from where the first film left off? Herc Hansen actor Max Martini gives us an indication that it could actually be a prequel. "I don't know if it's a prequel or a sequel, but if it's a prequel you'll learn more about Herc's family history."

Speaking to Empire Magazine in celebration of being named the film magazine's "Badass of the Year", actor Max Martini shared the following about working with del Toro on Pacific Rim the first go-around and returning for the sequel. "Working with Guillermo (del Toro) was a highlight, and the green-screen work was new to me....It's funny, I fell in love with this character (Herc Hansen). The key component was this relationship I had with my son, exploring the dysfunction and the loss, so where does Herc go from here? I don't know. It'll be interesting to see where Guillermo (del Toro) and Travis Beacham take it. I don't know if it's a prequel or a sequel, but if it's a prequel you'll learn more about Herc's family history. But Guillermo has such a vivid imagination, it could go anywhere." So, could the next Pacific Rim installment that Guillermo del Toro is currently working on actually be an adaptation of the prequel graphic novel from Travis Beacham? Stay tuned.

"When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse."

My thoughts on the prospect of a Pacific Rim prequel are pretty much the same as those about a sequel.

Pacific Rim was just fun. I haven't seen too many movies that made me feel like a kid again but some of the action scenes were just jaw dropping. I really hope they capitalize on the popularity the film has gotten since its theatrical release. Everyone I know that has seen this movie saw it on DVD or Blu-ray. I really think they'd be missing out on a massive opportunity if they didn't make a 2nd and 3rd.

A prequel would be better than a sequel. I didn't like the first one, so I hope they improve on the characters and dialogue in this one. And I agree with @Duke, he should move on to Justice League Dark

Yes, because I would like to see the logic unfold when massive amounts of supersonic jet fighters packing immense bombs where proven an inferior concept to using enormous and expensive melee robots.

Didn't Del Toro say we would get Kaiju/Jaeger hybrids in the sequel? Because Jaeger parts were left in their world? So I doubt that it will be a prequel because then there would be no reason behind what he has already stated.

The Pacific Rim sequel/prequel is not being actively developed. A scriptment was commissioned by the studio, but they wanted to wait until they saw how much home sales over the holidays were before they moved any further than that.

Now, I would imagine that since at Best Buy I saw Pacific Rim in their bargain bins for 9 bucks, home sales were not particularly high (also factoring in that its price has dropped on Amazon from 30 bucks to 12 in less than 2 months of release...)

Pacific Rim made 407 million on a budget of a little over 200 million and change. That is not including marketing and printing costs. It lost money in the theaters. Not on the scale of, say, Lone Ranger or John Carter or even Green Lantern, but it did not hit the black. Now, they may inch towards a profit after home sales and TV distribution residuals are tallied up, but if they do end up actually making money, it will not be a significant amount.

If there's a sequel/prequel/whatever, I will be very surprised...and I would imagine that its budget would be waaaaay less than the first installment.

Just wrote a review on this movie you can check out here if interested

http://www.corrosiveradio.com/2013/12/drunk-movie-reviews-pacific-rim-pretentious-monster-movie-ever-made/

I'll just some up the review for those that don't want to read it. If this movie had been what it should've been...a popcorn movie, it would've been great. Instead it turned in to some half-hearted character study which just didn't resonate with me or anyone else it sounds like.

I'm not totally against a sequel (I don't think a prequel makes any sense), but the focus of the movie has to be the monster action and not the emo whining of bruised characters. If that happens, I think we might actually get an enjoyable monster movie

yeah, but you would need to explain how the hell scientist didn't think about the radiation problem by the time they were creating first Jaeger.

"As a Mark-1 Jaeger, Coyote Tango runs on the power of a nuclear reactor. Given the short amount of time the Pan Pacific Defense Corps had to build the first series of Jaegers in response to the Kaiju threat, none of the Mark-1 series Jaegers were reinforced with protective measures to prevent radiation poisoning. As a result, the Rangers piloting Mark-1's developed cancer-related illnesses from exposure. Coyote Tango's pilots, Tamsin Sevier and Stacker Pentecost developed cancer from the exposure to the Jaeger's nuclear reactor. Both were retired from active duty as a result of their exposure to the reactor."

Noooo, no more prequels. Films need to move forwards! Not backwards. Upwards! Not forward!

@diomic

thanks :)

still it would be better if they wouldn't skip "the short amount of time" problem in the movie.
I can't remember, but i'm pretty sure it wasn't even mentioned.

I was like "WTF ? Scientists didn't think about protection from the radiance ?!"
jerryblake
jerryblake - 12/22/2013, 11:35 AM
still it doesn't kinda make sense. Yagers were complicated machines. Adding the protection from the radiation after building such compliacted machine shouldn't be a problem here.
