DC Collectibles is releasing a new 6" action figure line based on Batman: The Animated Series and series creators Bruce Timm and Paul Dini spoke with USA Today about the classic cartoon and the stories they created that are now considered part of the Batman lore. Timm and Dini's take on Mr. Freeze in particular, is an aspect of the 90's show that's now being adapted in modern shows and video games. Said Timm:

"In the comics, they never did anything with him other than he was the gimmicky freeze guy. He was kind of a joke. Anytime they trotted him out, people would just go, 'Oh no, that was the old Adam West show. We don't want people to be thinking about that. We're trying to be serious about these comics.' [In the carton, Victor Freeze's wife is in suspended animation following a cryogenic accident, which leaves Freeze] literally cold inside, supposedly dead to emotion. It was a 'cool' take on Mister Freeze, and that was the template on how we treated all of the characters."

Most likely the shows biggest contribution to DC Comics, Harley Quinn has gone on to become an integral part of Gotham and Joker stories in particular. On Quinn, Timm and Dini stated:

"[DC has] taken a lot of cues from what we did on the animated series, but at the same time everything we did on the show, the DNA came from the comics."

Recently, Timm met current Batman writer Scott Snyder at ECC and was surprised to learn that the latterwas such a huge fan of his work.

"At first I was taken aback. "I don't really think of it in those terms, and I read his comics and didn't really see a lot of Batman animated influence. But what it is was he was of a certain age when he watched that show, and it had a level of depth and dramatic heft that possibly other versions of Batman didn't have."

I didnt read comic books intil later in life. When I saw Batman the Animated Series it blew my mind. To this day its in the top 3 best animated TV series of all time.
All the re-imaginings of Batman over the years I always think of B:TaS as the definitive version of Batman that all other versions are to be compared to.

Since these are the guys who inveted Harley Quinn I wonder how they feel about all the crap costume changes she has gone through and how DC comics has ruined the character.

I mean...when they saw the outfit in the Arkham Asylum game did they look at each other and realize this was the beginning of the end of their character and that she would just slowly devolve into fanboy S&M wank material?

@Gamera623 - Like it or not, it sells more comic books. Besides, if you listen to interviews with Paul Dini, he only really created the character for his friend Arleen Sorkin to do voice work on in the animated series. He never thought the character would become so popular and take on a life of its own. Im sure he's just happy that Harley is still so relevant. With all the residual checks he gets, im sure he doesn't care about her sexuality being displayed more prominently.

Batman the animated series Season 4 with the redesigns, and Batman beyond are my all time favorites from DC. Justice league unlimited was pretty cool too.

Yes Bruce Timm and Paul Dini have created the definitive versions of the characters by way of design, personality and influence. It is evident in the Arkham games even tho there are major creative liberties taken by way of design. I wouldn’t go so far as to say F**k Burton, Nolan and Snyder but there versions are inferior to the B:TAS versions. Burton brought the seriousness back to Batman. I still remember going to the movies when I was 7 and thinking that Batman was real. Nolan brought the real world approach to Batman back to the masses. Im still very appreciative of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. I went to see both of those multiple times in theaters. Snyder is bringing depth back to the comics and honestly is IMHO the best thing happening in the new 52 (which is a major disappointment).

The Clayface origin episode , Mad Love, The Laughing Fish ,Almost Got Him, I Am The Night, Heart of Ice...

Those TAS episodes should be REQUIRED watching for any creator tasked with bringing a live-action Batman to the screen that's true to the character and what he represents...

Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes is hands down the #1 best animated series Marvel has ever put out. I will not take that away from it. I love A:EMH!!

BUT....B:TaS, Superman:TaS, Justice League, JL:Unlimited and Young Justice I think were all better shows than A:EMH.

DC Animation just dominates and kills Marvel Animated a hundred times over.

The same cannot be said for live action films...but in the animation department its not even a contest.

I love their work on Batman and Superman but do hate what they did with Justice League. They should've used the original seven. Though I did like JLU.

Yeah, Avengers:EMH was really great, I'm still pissed that it got cancelled, it was definitely the best Marvel animated show.

But Batman TAS was WAY better.

When Batman the Animated Series came out I haven’t read any Batman comics. The only things I knew about him I learned from the Burton movies and the TV series. So Tim show me who Batman really was and thanks to him I became a batfan.

Their era will be the golden age of superhero animation. Siskel and Ebert made a special effort to review Mask Of The Phantasm and Superman And Batman. And both rightfully agreed that the stories and characters were better than WBs Batman films.

Justice League War was so terrible it was a reminder of 80's action toons like Real Ghostbusters and GI Joe. Hollow characters. Simplistic writing. But the 80's shows would've had better voices than War.
