For over a decade Screen Gems has been cashing in with their
Resident Evil film franchise. The first film in the series, 2002's
Resident Evil, pulled $102M and then the sequels: 2004's
Resident Evil: Apocalypse did $129.3M, 2007's
Resident Evil: Extinction did $147M,
Resident Evil: Afterlife did a best $296.2M and
Resident Evil: Retribution did second best with $240M. They cleared some hefty profits as they were given surprisingly modest budgets for films that relied heavily on complex action sequences and CGI. It is one of the few video game-to-film adaptations that has actually been successful. So, it is quite surprising that Paul W.S. Anderson revealed to
Collider that the next Resident Evil will also be the last one.
He started off the conversation with Collider by revealing the title, which is “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter." He cautioned that its just the working title at the moment, but added, "It may end up being the final title, but that’s what’s written on the front page of my script… I’m right in the middle of [the first draft].” When title meant it was the final film in the series, Anderson revealed, “That’s what’s on the title page, it’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, so absolutely.” There you go, it will be the final chapter, for real.
When can you expect The Final Chapter? Not any time soon. They don't have a released date nor a production start-date. That'll figure out the start-date once Anderson complete's the first screenplay. As for a release date, Anderson says, “I don’t know [when it will be in theaters], depends how fast I write, I guess. There’s no set date yet but hopefully we’ll have an announcement for that soon.”
Resident Evil: Retribution - The Umbrella Corporation’s deadly T-virus continues to ravage the Earth, transforming the global population into legions of the flesh eating Undead. Without a safe haven, Alice continues to hunt those responsible for the outbreak; a chase that takes her from Tokyo to New York, Washington, D.C. and Moscow, culminating in a mind-blowing revelation that will force her to rethink everything that she once thought to be true. Aided by newfound allies and familiar friends, Alice must fight to survive long enough to escape a hostile world on the brink of oblivion. The countdown has begun.
