Orignal Actor (Not Robert Englund) As Freddy Krueger - A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET

Happy Halloween! Did you know Robert Englund wasn't Wes Craven's first choice for Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street? English actor David Warner was, and now you can see makeup tests he took part in before he left due to scheduling conflicts.

Over the decades, David
Warner
has taken on a lot of roles in television shows and movies, but one role could've defined his career if not for a scheduling conflict. For me, I most recognize the Emmy Award winning actor as 'Chancellor Gorkon' from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country and the main antagonist of 1988's Waxwork, but at one time he could've been 'Freddy Krueger' in the 1984 horror-classic, A Nightmare On Elm Street. Wes Craven had originally wanted a stuntman for the role, but then quickly realized an actor was needed. He chose Warner for the part, but a scheduling conflict forced Warner to drop out and Robert Englund stepped in. Below, are images of Warner taking part in a makeup test for the role.
A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984) - Can your nightmares be fatal? In this classic of the horror film genre that launched a movie franchise, a hideously scarred pedophile who was murdered by a lynch mob returns years later in the terrifying nightmares of his killers' teenage children -- and the dreaming teenagers are starting to die in their sleep. Starring Academy Award-nominee and Golden Globe-winner Johnny Depp ("Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," "Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy"), Golden Globe-winner John Saxon ("Enter the Dragon," "The Appaloosa"), Heather Langenkamp (TV's "Just the Ten of Us") and Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger ("Urban Legend," "The Mangler").

Looks more like my creepy next door who's always complaining about kids and his lawn than it looks like "Freddie Krueger."

Nightmare on Elm Street has always been my favourite horror movie. I knew there was someone else attached before Englund, just never knew who. Now I know, and thank god he didn't stick around. No one will ever come close to what Englund did. Jackie Earle Haley did a great job in the reboot, but it was still no Robert Englund.

What could have been! Check out "Time After Time" to see a great time travel movie with Warner as Jack the Ripper. It's shocking that they haven't tried to remake it yet.

Haha I actually just watched this film last night. It's a classic.

I also like how the sequels established a trend of odd numbered ones being good and even numbered ones being shit.

Not nearly as good as Englund's look, but still far far better BY A LONG SHOT than that pathetic excuse of a remake. Wonder if Warner is still interested in another reboot?

Nice fun fact, but Robert England IS Freddy Kruger. I'd rather see current gen cgi with his voice than see anyone else try for the role. JEH was a perfect attempt (Little Children) and he still didn't come close to England's Freddy. Nobody does it better...

The man had such an awesome voice... Loved his Ra's al Ghul. Blows away all other versions for me.

Warner stole every scene in my favorite movie as a kid, Time Bandits. Gilliam directed film about Evil, midgets, time travel and Supreme beings with an excellent cast. He could have pulled Freddy off if given the chance, but Englund was/is perfect as Krueger.

David Warner is absolutely one of my all-time favorite actors! In addition to what everyone else has said, he was also in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze!!

@Dunejedi
I'm pretty sure he was Nancy's love interest, and was the last person to die.
