Upcoming Disney Theme Park Rides To Be Based On New STAR WARS Films

Out with the old, in with the new. At Variety‘s Dealmakers Breakfast, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that Walt Disney Imagineering is currently designing theme park attractions based on the new Star Wars sequels and spinoffs. We'll get our first look at those new attraction at some point next year. The designs could've been done a bit sooner, but Iger wanted to wat until Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams had finsihed mapping out his vision.
Iger stopped early development on theme park attractions at Imagineering. “We couldn’t tell them what was new,” Iger said, until Abrams was finished developing and producing the sequel. “I slowed it all down so what we come forward with will have a blend of the past, present and maybe the future,” referencing upcoming sequels and spinoff films. “Now we have a sense of what’s in ‘Star Wars 8,’ and what some of the standalone films will have in them.”

We all knew this day was coming after Disney purchased the rights to Star Wars from Lucasfilm for $4 BILLION. Disney parks, worldwide, will have more of a Star Wars presence going forward. “But we want to do this big, which takes time, and to do it right,” Iger told Variety. Currently, the Disney parks have attractions featuring elements from the older Star Wars films, but Iger felt going forward the focus should be on the newer films. Iger explains, “I didn’t want someone to say, ‘I just saw the movie and there’s nothing in that movie in this (attraction). We waited to see what this film would have in it.

Also, thanks to Star Wars fandom we saw The Force Awakens trailer sooner then planned.
Disney nearly didn’t release a trailer, Iger admitted. Abrams is known for wanting to keep footage of his films under wraps. But the rabid “Star Wars” fanbase prompted Disney to come up with the brief introduction of what the new film would look like.

Star Wars: Episode VII - Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Lupita Nyong'o and Gwendoline Christie will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film. It's being directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, and John Williams returns as the composer. The movie opens worldwide on December 18, 2015.

The new park attractions will most likely have a heavy presence at D23 Expo next year along with other aspects of the new movies. They already had a small display last year in 2013 with the mocking tag line "Project: Orange Harvest" next to the Avatar-Land props (A Na'vi's boot is HUGE)

It should also be noted that in Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World, the iconic Sorcerer Mickey's hat is being taken down as well as a large section of the park that is hardly ever used...me thinks there will be action there in relation to Star Wars.

Even though it's JJ Abrams in charge of this... I'm already standing in front of my local movie theater screaming at anyone that happens by to "TAKE ALL MY MONEY!"

I've been assaulted and robbed several times now, and have since begun to rethink my life and the choices that I make.

But as always, at least I can look at myself in the mirror and say "Man, at least you're not pregnant."

I am so excited for the new flick. I still think John Boyega looks like Ron Perlman in black face.

So the rumors about the to-scale Millennium Falcon built for the prequels becoming a part of Disneyland as a walk-through attraction may turn out to be TRUE?

As a former Cast Member that worked on Star Tours, our biggest complaint by Guests was that they were a little dizzy from the 3D element. The only effect that uses the 3D is when you land on Naboo and the tail of a Naboo fighter crashes through your front window screen. Other than that, the 3D only gives depth. I've seen the video with the 3D turned off and the high resolution on the projection is just fine on it's own.

As far as the expansion goes, what I heard last year from my sources was that these are some of the plans for the expansion of Star Tours attractions at Disney's Hollywood Studios (which allegedly is being rebranded in the next year as Disney's Hollywood Adventure).

- The Backlot Express quick service food area next to the Jedi Training Academy stage will be turned into a ride for children who didn't make the height requirement on Star Tours. Originally it was rumored to be turned into the Mos Eisley Cantina with an animatronic performance band featuring the Cantina Band and possibly the Max Rebo band but that was scrapped. However it may end up in another area.

- The Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular is heavily rumored to be shutting down soon to make room for either two small attractions or one large attraction, Star Wars themed of course.

- The Jedi Training Academy will be moved indoors to end any possibility of cancelled shows due to rain as the stage is currently outdoors. It will take up the space of the former Sounds Dangerous theater and the American Idol Experience theater which shut down earlier this year.

- A large Star Wars character meet and greet area will also be installed.

The expansion will see the Cast Parking Lot and Cast Entrance and Costuming Area for the parade and their former float holding area be either re-purposed and/or rezoned to make room for these expansions.

However, like most ideas by Walt Disney Imagineering, plans can change.
