What GHOSTBUSTERS 3 Title & Cast Could Have Been

December of 2013, screenwriter Etan Cohen ("Men In Black 3") finished his second Ghostbusters 3 draft. The film's producer Ivan Reitman, who at that time was attached to direct, sent an email to Sony that reveals the title and his plan for the cast.

Exactly one year ago, Ivan Reitman, who directed Ghostbusters (1985) and Ghostbusters II (1989), sent Sony Entertainment Chairman Amy Pascal an email containing the second draft of the Ghostbusters 3 script and notes on the potential cast. At that time, Reitman was attached to produce and direct. We don't know much about the plot, but it would have featured 'Ray Stanz' (Dan Aykroyd), 'Egon Spengler' (Harold Ramis) and 'Winston Zeddemore' (Ernie Hudson) passing the baton to a younger generation of Ghostbusters. Sadly, a month after this email was sent out Harold Ramis passed away. Soon after, Reitman stepped down as the director, citing Ramis' death and Bill Murray's lack of interest in reprising his role of 'Peter Venkman' as being the reasons. So, the information below should be viewed as a "would've, should've, could've." Keep in mind, the brief character descriptions below are not from Reitman's email. They are from a character breakdown, which was reported in April by The Wrap's Jeff Sneider, that match the characters listed in Reitman's email.

Let's get to it! Ghostbusters 3 would've been titled, GHOSTBUSTERS: ALIVE AGAIN. For the role of 'Chris,' the son of Bill Murray's 'Peter Venkman,' Reitman was considering Adam Pally ("The Mindy Project"), Charlie Day ("Pacific Rim") and Jesse Eisenberg ("Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice"). Reitman told Pascal, "I have met with all three, and frankly this is the piece of casting I'm the most unsure about." The 'Chris' role is a bit of a surprise as it was assumed 'Oscar,' the son of 'Dana Barrett' (Sigourney Weaver) in Ghostbusters II would be considered or treated like Venkman's son. Maybe he was left out of the script to distance itself from the last film, which was poorly received.

The other male lead was 'Jeremy.' He was described as the leader of the younger generation of Ghostbusters. Reitman only had Jonah Hill ("22 Jump Street") listed for the part, and said he was meeting with Hill soon to give him the lastest script to read.

The female lead would have been a doctor by the name of 'Anna.' Reitman met with Brie Larson ("The Gambler") and Anne Hathaway ("The Dark Knight Rises"). He said both had "expressed a strong desire to do it."

The film's comic relief was an older male named 'Dean,' but the agency breakdown in April listed his name as 'Eean.'  Reitman had Zach Galifianakis ("The Hangover") listed for the role, and mentioned that he was going to meet with him in a month.

The film's main villain was named 'Gniewko' on Reitman's list, but 'Eniewko' on the casting agency breakdown. Close enough! Reitman wanted Sacha Baron Cohen ("Borat") to play the part, but hadn't approached the actor. He was hoping to fill out the rest of the cast before pursuing him. Though, Pascal had someone else in mind for the role. She wanted Will Ferrell ("Elf"), but Reitman didn't believe he would be 'effective' as the film's villain.

There were three minor roles listed that weren't apart of the agency character breakdown, so we don't know anything about them except for which actors Reitman had in mind. For the role of 'Ashley,' Reitman met with Rebel Wilson ("Pitch Perfect"), who said she wanted to do it. Lastly, Parks And Recreation actors, Aubrey Plaza and Aziz Ansari, were penciled in for the roles of 'Joni' and 'Jon.'

Well I'm not that impressed by the concept, but I would have loved to see a trailer. Too bad, and screw Bill Murray for holding out all these years.

Somehow this bit of info has me more excited than the Feig version. Ghostbusters doesn't need a reboot. Either put it to bed or make a passing of the torch style flick.

I would like to see another Ghostbusters. I know that some of you do not like 2, but I found it entertaining, and enjoy it still to this day. It's a shame we will never get the full original cast back again...

just stop this nonsense. Ghostbusters worked because of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis.

It should have been the main cast offspring, each having a weird quirk about all of them. Rebel Wilson, could have been Dan Akroyd's character's Ray Stantz's daughter. Andrew Garfield as Harold Ramis' character Egon's son. Charlie Day as Bill Murray's Peter Venkman's son and maybe John Boyega as Winston Zeddemore's son. The previous Ghostbusters sort of missing in action and each of the siblings finding their way to some warehouse full of proton packs and gadgets and are intrigued by what they find.

So they binned a pretty good idea and went with the worst possible other idea. SONY need to be shut down, but FOX are worse. [frick] them both.

With the exception of Zach Galifianakis, Rebel Wilson and Eisenburg who at the same character in every film they star in I think its not bad casting. But let's just leave the Ghostbusters as it stands and not destroy it with these "reboot" and "spin-off" films.
Hollywood truly is running out of ideas.

I have about as much interest in any version of this movie as I do in clicking on a link from the main page and being redirected to an article/add about brain health. Seriously. WTF is going on with this site nowadays?

Whatever, I loved both the second Ghostbusters movie.

As for a reboot, I'm not sure how it could possibly match the awesomeness of the original cast. Those movies were largely great because of the personalities involved. If you take a new group of personalities, you change the entire thing. It can obviously work, but do I want to see it for the same reason I would watch the first ones? No.

There was already a Ghostbusters 3. It's called Ghostbusters: The Video Game and the whole cast was involved, so it's canon in my book.
