GREEN LANTERN, IRON MAN 3 & THOR Concept Art By Ivan Girard

GREEN LANTERN, IRON MAN 3 & THOR Concept Art By Ivan Girard

I recently came across some fantastic concept art created by Ivan Girard for several superhero films in recent past. Come check out artwork for Kenneth Branagh's Thor, Shane Black's Iron Man 3 and Martin Campbell's Green Lantern.

For Green Lantern, Girard worked on early concepts to establish a visual identity for Green Lantern's energy-charged costume and space-travelling. His designs were inspired by tesla coils, lightning, nebulas, fire and holographic elements. The 2011 film was directed by Martin Campbell ("Casino Royale") and starred Ryan Reynolds ("Deadpool"). For Thor, Girard worked on designs for the Bifrost, and Jotunheim the homeworld of the Frost Giants. The 2011 Marvel film was directed by Kenneth Branagh ("Cinderella") and starred Chris Hemsworth ("Rush") as the God of Thunder. For Iron Man 3, Girard came up with a visual look to the red-hot Extremis effect. The 2013 film was directed by Shane Black ("Kiss Kiss Bang Bang") and starred Robert Downey Jr. ("Chef").

One of my biggest problems with the first Thor is just how visually...blah...it is. Jotunheim and the Frost Giants looked great, but somehow Branagh managed to make New Mexico and Asgard look ridiculously small and lifeless. Thor 2 and Alan Taylor's Game of Thrones influence was much-needed, IMO.

All the concept art doesn't make up for how bad 2 out of the 3 movies are. The other one I love to bits.

Part of me wants to keep the world they have already created, just continue with a new story. What's the harm in taking a character you already created and adding him in cameos in the now established universe. I loved Mark Strong's performance as Sinestro, just go with it. Reboot, but don't reboot the origin and just keep Reynolds with a new suit and a 2nd Green Lantern movie in 2018 or what ever you have planned. I mean come on, Reynolds isn't that bad!!!

@0megaDaGod Hmm, that's interesting to hear. Somehow I've missed out on any and all deleted scenes from Thor. I guess both movies would've been served better if we saw their respective director's cuts.

I have pretty high hopes that Ragnarok can fully redeem this trilogy in a big way.

@TheRealIntruder Oh I completely agree, even tho in my opinion the Thor movies are VERY mediocre. I'm hoping Ragnarok will be The Winter Soldier for the Thor movies.

And Merry Christmas :)

Thor looks SO MUCH like THOR with his helmet. Chris Hemsworth's excuse as to why he doesn't wear the helmet is understandable but lame. If it kept falling and hitting the brim of his nose, then surely they could have made a more practical design with lighter material. THOR LOOKS 10X MORE EPIC AND ICONIC WITH HIS HELMET. Hell, even the Marvel Universe show has Thor wearing his helmet. If Tom Hiddleston has no problem wearing that big as awkward and cumbersome helmet during fight scenes, then I don't see why Hemsworth can't.

As far as Green Lantern is concerned, Ryan Reynolds wasn't a "bad" choice but he was the wrong choice but ultimately "he" wasn't the reason why the movie failed. However Ryan Reynolds was a lazy choice and he was being too greedy, trying to be a character in almost every CBM and not discerning enough with his casting choices. Most "GREAT" actors know when a certain role is NOT for them and know when a particular role is meant for someone else. Hal Jordan should have been cast with an unknown actor with a n A list supporting cast, but the way the story, directing and designs were done, the movie would have failed regardless of who was cast as Hal Jordan.

If the two Thor movies we got didn't do Thor enough justice, then unfortunately I don't see how a story as epic as Ragnarok can be done right with just one movie. I think Marvel Studios aught to reconsider and do Ragnarok as a two or three part movie also. Ragnarok in a way, is just as big a Infinity War.

"James Franco as GL"
I love it!!!!!!!

Yeah James Franco as Hal.....I think that might have worked better actually. I just don't know if Franco can pull of the military persona, BUT the "hotheaded" Air Force pilot...Yeah, I COULD see him pulling that off.

I still dont blame Ryan for Green lantern...
It was the direction n the script..
plus those concept art looks way much better than the movie...
it would hav been better if they made it like that!

How is it that the most of the concept artists get it right, even down to who you "they" envisioned or used as a reference for their designs....then we get the crappy final designs which most of the time get it wrong. *sigh* But yeah James Franco as Hal Jordan...hmmmmmmmmm.....
