Warner Brothers will have one heck of a writedown on their hands with Jupiter Ascending. The film, which was directed by the siblings Andy and Lana Wachowski, cost $200 million to produce and another $100 million to market, but only grossed $18.37 million in its opening weekend at the North American box office. If we factor in the $33.8 million it still leaves the film $250 in the hole. That's a big hole! That's what she said!

Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis star in "Jupiter Ascending," an original science fiction epic adventure from filmmakers Lana and Andy Wachowski. Jupiter Jones (Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people's houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos. From the streets of Chicago to far flung galaxies whirling through space, "Jupiter Ascending" is written and directed by the Wachowskis.

Arrives in theaters February 6, 2015

It wasn't a case of underdeveloped characters with this one. It was the convoluted sceenplay and thematic decistions

Craptastic art for a craptastic film.

Just saw it today. Long line at red robin so we were like let's go see a movie! It was right across the street and JA was ten minutes from starting.

Ten minutes later I was apologizing to my wife. About five minutes later during one battle scenes I wanted to yell Stoooooooop!

This movie was a light hearted comedy buried in too much serious business. It was two different movies. Scenes with mila kunis and Channing Tatum were pretty OK especially when it was light hearted. Jupiter's story and the yum yum Tatum's story were interesting. But as soon as it got serious or any battle scenes started it just was just exhausting.

I want to see where it was going but I don't think the wachoskis should ever get that much of a budget. Ever.

This movie should have been left on the cutting room floor.

@aussyace

This isn't like transformers or other blockbuster movies that get bagged by critics. This was closer to battlefield earth.

"This was closer to battlefield earth.

it wasn't that bad. Had some cool action scenes that did get to be too much in the end. I would review it as "Transformers & Prometheus had a baby" lol

but minus the giant machines if that makes any sense

@jollem

no actually the talking wasn't boring. When the story's are being explained to Jupiter it was interesting. Especially her reactions to all this new information. When I mean serious I more meant the action. When it came to the action scenes it was boring. Very boring in fact.

Also the main villain? I just can't. I can't put him into words. Lol

Yeah the villain, Eddie Redmayne's character was interesting but we didn't get enough depth from the character

His angry whispering through the movie hurt. I'm pretty sure it actually hurt me.

You should still see it. Its one you have to see for yourself. I've read critics and watched videos with detailed explanations of the movie. But it was different seeing it for myself.

@retrofit

I would be shocked if WB ever does another movie with the wachowskis

Also,one big thing that might have killed the action scenes. You know how the new HD TV's have a higher refresh rate? It was like that through most of the movie for me. My eyes had a hard time adjusting even in 2D. But it wasn't the whole movie. It was weird.

@Jollem

No problem man, I like weird things too. This actually had a lot of potential with a completely different script and is still definitely worth a watch. I think wachowski's need to step their game up in this time that we're in
royroy
royroy - 2/10/2015, 11:17 PM
@bazinga

I don't think the wachokskis will step it up. Their reaction to opinions of this movie is that we are all used to brain dead popcorn movies and reject the complex.

They think this is like their space version of cloud atlas. They legit think this is too deep for people digest. Which is just LMAO ridiculous.
Itsbeenfun
Itsbeenfun - 2/10/2015, 11:21 PM
@royroy

LMAO "space version of cloud atlas" that's a stretch haha. Well if they can't tell that this was a brainless popcorn flick then i'm sure they will realize when Star Wars and Ridley's Martian comes out later this year. I'm surprised they actually referred to it that way
royroy
royroy - 2/10/2015, 11:27 PM
@bazinga

I was blown away at how they see themselves. Sure matrix and cloud atlas has some more complex themes that go beyond bang bang pow pow. But this movie doesn't have that at all. Or maybe it does and I just missed it? I'm starting to think they are high as a kite. Lol
Itsbeenfun
Itsbeenfun - 2/10/2015, 11:32 PM
@royroy

Lol I couldn't find any complex themes with this one either. they must be high on something, and here I'm thinking they just wanted to make a sci-fi action popcorn movie. It's all too hilarious
royroy
royroy - 2/10/2015, 11:49 PM
@bazinga

"The summer is built around familiarity," said Lana. "Many cultural critics who shape awareness for films are obsessed with sequels and derivative material. They wildly crave it. That kind of environment is hostile to originality. It only makes space for derivative material and rejects originality. I think Warner Bros. was uncomfortable with that environment."

This was their explanation for pushing the movie back.

...

Yeaaaaaaah...

Thank god Guardians of the Galaxy came out before this film or else people would have completely embraced the notion that a Space Opera that doesn't have Trek or Wars in it wouldn't work on the big screen.
royroy
royroy - 2/11/2015, 12:19 AM
BTW all that stuff I said is just my opinion of what I think the wachokskis think of general audiences and how their "art" is received. Based off of things they said and all. But damn its not hard to read between the lines with them. Its pretty much "our art is for us cause we are smart."

And I say this as someone who was a fan if their matrix work.

@demongod20

Funny thing is there was a guardians of the galaxy in this movie somewhere. Deep,deep down there...
Itsbeenfun
Itsbeenfun - 2/11/2015, 12:23 AM
@royroy

Wow they really tried to use that bs as an excuse?? lol what's funny is that what they said would have actually somewhat made sense had the movie actually reflected those statements. I loved their work on the Matrix as well and Cloud Atlas. This is great though that we can see how a movie like this is perceived compared to films like guardians of the galaxy and interstellar because I think it will push the sci-fi genre to get much better
