In his interview with Crave Online Mark Strong wanted to stress that he isn't seeking franchises. Actually he said he is quite nervous about attaching himself to a role that is destined to be a part of sequels. Even though he was reluctant, he did end up signing on for Green Lantern and John Carter. Why the change of heart? Mark thinks that times have changed. Where as an actor could avoid franchises twenty years ago, he says, "Now everything has a sequel. You have no choice."

The following is an excerpt from the interview with Crave Online
They already announced a ‘Green Lantern’ sequel. Are they inviting you back and giving you more to do?

Have they announced it?

Over the summer they said, “We’re doing Green Lantern 2!”

I think they’d like to. It didn’t make the money that they wanted it to make.

That’s why it was a bizarre announcement.

But I think what they’ve done, they feel they have a property that is interesting enough if they get it right. And now the advertising, the groundwork has been laid with the first one and I think they genuinely feel, because the second one I think exists in written form, they feel they have something that could work. Having said all that I’ve heard absolutely nothing and I have no idea whether they will go again, but I know there are two schools of thought. One, that it didn’t work, it didn’t make the money so we don’t make another one, and the other school of thought is: “Imagine we made a really, really good second movie. It could fly.”

Would you want to follow the path teased at the end with the yellow ring and getting corrupted?

Sure, yeah, because I got into the mythology of Green Lantern. I read all the comic books, or as many as I could, and I slightly got hooked. I got into that character. And if the second movie is exploring his fall, then I’d be very interested, yeah.

We only see two glimpses of you in the ‘John Carter’ trailer. Obviously they have to introduce John Carter first, but do you have some really nice juicy material?

I do. I’m not in it as much as the trailer might perhaps suggest because there’s a lot of us in it and there’s a big storyline between two warring tribes. There’s a big love story going on as well. My bit is one aspect of the film.

Then it might be accurate. We only see you twice.

But enough to be there as a presence. It’s my favorite kind of part. You just pop in and make stuff happen with the few scenes that you have. I play a character called Matai Shang who’s kind of the leader of a race who you’re never quite sure if they really exist or not.

Good, that script screwed him out of having a great performance.

"They already announced a Green Lantern sequel." Um, I don't think they did. If it happens, it won't be anytime soon. Can't wait to see more of him in John Carter.

I myself enjoyed Green Lantern I definitely don't think it deserves this bad criticism from everyone. I want to see Mark Strong be the badass Sinestro we know and love. The ending scene was awesome.

I doubt that they'll make a GL2 but I would love to see Mark Strong reprise the role!

[frick] any ideas of a reboot, just make a sequel BUT stick with only two writers and have Geoff Johns ACTUALLY work on it none of that fake stuff people reported. Have him be one of the writers and we'll be good.

Supporting superhero reboots means you're supporting the death of Superhero movies. You give hollywood the idea if a movie [frick]s up, just reboot it over and over again.

But yeah, GL 2 is a hell yeah!

GL2 sounds like it is the same as X-men. The interviewed person vaguely says we would LIKE to do a sequel. Then Everyone gets to the net and says "OH HELLS YEAH! Thay are making a sequel!!!"

Guys, news of a sequel was mentioned in the Hollywood Reporter back in June (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/warner-bros-pursue-green-lantern-205703). An LA Times interview with Jeff Robinov confirmed that the studio wanted to make the second film "edgier" (http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2011/08/02/warner-green-lantern-2-will-be-edgier-flash-has-solid-script/). That implies that they want to make a sequel in my book.

Green Lantern was NOT as bad as people make it out to be. In fact, if the villain of the piece was not that dumb version of Parallax it would've been much better. Of course it had it's faults. It was supposed to be much more than Cap and Thor but it failed at that which is a shame.

I however do want to see Sinestro and Hal's relationship destroyed. I want to experience the ultimate Green Lantern movie. The real movie we deserved but not the one we need right now... yeah yeah, some Dark Knight but still.

Do this WB/DC: Fire the writers, get two writers at the max, get back Reynolds(HE DID A DECENT JOB!) and Strong! And make the "turning point" of Sinestro in the middle of the movie. Explore their relationship. Pleaaase! We need a decent Green Lantern movie! There's so much. Make everything from Secret Origin!

And FLASH AND WW as fast as you can too!

Make a Sinestro movie. Maybe throw Guy Gardner in, but focus on Thaal. Mention how the "other" Green Lantern didn't live up to expectations and he has been temporarily relieved of duty. Make it a Sick movie, then do the actual sequel with a new actor for Hal. By this time people will be like, "Ryan Who?". Bring in Josh Duhamel as Jordan and introduce John Stewart. Save the franchise! That's it! .... right...?

I've said it before and I'll say it again...Mark Strong as Sinestro, was the ONLY thing good about the Green Lantern movie. I was skeptical from the beginning when they said Ryan Reynolds was in it. He sucked as Hal Jordan period. Blake Lively was horrible as Carol as well! I'd say wait a few years to reboot it again, bring Mark Strong as Sinestro again if he would still be interested and get a whole new cast. Change everything that was about the first movie. It was crap. Based off of Secret Origin my a**

Please. I won't mind a reboot at all, but if he's in for a sequel, then make it happen. Probably he's the only reason I have to wanting a sequel by now, it's a rare moment to get a perfect cast like he is for Sinestro. (Saying that I don't think the movie was THAT bad either, but I'm just way too disappointed.)

Hey, or a semi-reboot like The Incredible Hulk. Whatever. As long as he's back in for Sinestro (highly unlikely for this thing to happen in a reboot, so I'll say no for reboot), I'll accept it.

schneider625 "Make a Sinestro movie..."

Ha, interesting. Mark Strong as the main lead, with a DCnU-styled storyline (I know, but they still can alter it somehow)? I know how unlikely it is, but IF they could pull that off, that would be sick. And also it will be a unique take, which could be somewhat innovative...one may dream, right?
