Bane Co-Creator Graham Nolan Discusses THE DARK KNIGHT RISES' Version Of The Character

Graham Nolan, who can't even bear to watch Bane's incarnation in Joel Schumacher's atrocious Batman & Robin, gives his opinion on what he has seen so far.

Cine Web Radio recently nabbed an interview with comic book artist Graham Nolan, who is best known for his work on Batman, specifically Knightfall. Graham Nolan, Chuck Dixon, and Doug Moench are the co-creators of the villainous Bane. Currently Graham is working on two syndicated comics, Rex Morgan, M.D. and Sunshine State.

When asked which comic book he'd like to see turned into a film next, he said Doc Savage. Would you guys like to see Doc Savage turned into a film as well?

Could you tell us about the creation of this character?
Bane was created to be the ultimate villain capable of bringing down The Batman. He had to be intelligent, powerful and brutal. Chuck and I discussed many aspects of the character before I set pencil to paper and designed him.

Did you know that Bane would have such an impact in Batman Legacy?
We knew he would be important in to the Knightfall storyline, but had no idea he would reach the popularity of today.

In 1997, Robert Swen played the part of Bane in Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin, what do you think of his work as Bane?
To this day neither Chuck nor I have seen the movie. It's so monumentally bad, I won't waste my time. And the character in there...is NOT the Bane we created.

2012 will be Bane's year, as Christopher Nolan has decided that he would be the new villain of the next movie (The Dark Knight Rises). You may have seen the first pictures and trailers... What do you think of Bane's look?
I like what I see so far. I understand the need to change certain things for a movie. The Batman costume of film is not that of the comics either. It's more important to get the character right.

(If you have seen the prologue of The Dark Knight Rises) What do you think of Tom Hardy's voice as Bane ? (It seems that a lot of people have had difficulties to understand him!)
Yes, it is a bit difficult, but I am not going to judge the film by a pre-release clip. There is plenty of time to tweak the sound and enhance the clarity if the director decides it's necessary.

Have you been called by DC Comics or Christopher Nolan's team to work on the character with them ?
No.

What do you think of Christopher Nolan's first two Batman movies?
I am one of the few that liked the first one (Batman Begins) is better than the second.

More generally, what do you think of the super-hero movies ?
When done well like Captain America and The Dark Knight, I like them. When done like Spider-man 3, I hate them.

Thanks to Jacquotgame for the heads up

The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters July 20th 2012 and stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon, Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake and Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate.

so there you have it: both creators now endorse Nolan's bane version. So quit hating and find something else to do with your time. they're a lot smarter than most people because they don't pre-judge, unlike most people on this site. they know that the important stuff is the essence of the character, not what he looks like.

Saw This Means War yesterday. Good chick-flick.
Tom Hardy was great. His action sequences were very credible and great acting too.
He speaks so fast and doesn't articulate that good. Saw the bootleg version of the prologue...hm, mixed feelings.
Guess I'll have to smoke some of his inhalor in order to slo-things down in my mind. If you get my drift.

The Dark Knight was just different in tone. Batman Begins was more adventurous. It had more whoas in it. Like IM1.

they need to move that mask to the comics. that mask is so freakin dope.

they did it with harley quinn. it's time for nolan to leave HS ever lasting stamp on the comic version of batman.

to me the greatest thing about batman is all the different things he is to all different people. BB and TDK are two very different movies. but they both feel like very different BATMAN movies. first you have his epic journey with ninjas and ras alghul, second is an emense crime drama with the joker. we're seriously lucky to be fans...

@mbembet. I really don't think forever was nearly as bad as b&r! I quite like forever actually! It has the single greatest comic book in joke of all time!
"Holy rusted metal Batman!"
"Eh?"
"The metal, its all rusty, with holes in it, y'know?"
"Oh..."

I'm one of the few who loves Bane's mask in the movie. It's creepy, and very Hannibal Lecter-esque. And it obviously serves a purpose; that mask from the comics would be pointless as far as I can gather since keeping his identity secret doesn't look to be a priority to movie Bane, from what we know about the plot. The mask looks like a nasty set of teeth. He looks like a monster, not a mexican wrestler.

I liked The dark Knight ebtter than batman Begins, mainly because of the many different themes and subjects present in the film, whereas in Batman begins i thought fear was ok and an abstract, general discussion about justice vs revenge was also interesting but it didn't go to the length The Dark Knight did. Whataver, tastes differ but I think it's important to note that teh creators behind the character seem to think that nolan's got the character right and for me that's a ringing endorsement.

@SUPERMAN2013

You still dont get it,
its not about making it look as close to the comics as possible.
A good artist makes their own interpertation of the characters, and one that will better serve their story.

Sure the Batman and Robin Bane looked closer, but he was a bumbling idiot.
The Most Important Thing Is The Character. What if Some one did another Batman movie with the joker, and he looked closer to the comics than ever. But he was some bumbling uselees goon who was affraid of his own shadow.

He may look like the Joker, but he WOULD NOT BE THE JOKER.
It's about capturing who the person truly is, not dressing up like them.

Nolan has taken creative liberties on the design of this character, just as different comic artists have their own visual takes on each character.
There are characters that look one way in a comic, but when you look at different comic with them, they look very different. These comic creators and filmakers, are artists, not copyers, they make great entertaining stories and bring their own styles to the characters.

I'm sorry if the style that Nolan is bringing to the table does not resonate with you.

I'm not sold on Hardy but willing to give him a shot. The mask looks silly but I get the change and it doesn't bother me. Stupider costume changes have occured and the Bane change of his mask isn't in the top 20 of bad changes. It's just a cosmetic whatever. I'm more interested in the story and how it goes than anything.

TheGreenArrow52 is pussy and I'ma just leave it at that..

Anyways, I understand them not using Bane's original outfit, but he still should've been bigger. He doesn't look very intimidating. The Hulk, now that's someone I wouldn't wanna mess with
