Brandon Routh Finds Strength From SUPERMAN RETURNS Setback

Brandon Routh Finds Strength From SUPERMAN RETURNS Setback

Bryan Singer's take on Superman was not a box office disaster, but the film failed to revitalize one of Warner Bros. most valuable properties. A sequel was scrapped and Brandon Routh had to go looking for a new gig.

I always find it difficult to judge Brandon Routh's performance in Superman Returns when he wasn't given that much to do or say. Superman may have been the title of the film, but it felt like it was the Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) and Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) show.

The film itself is awkward. Bryan Singer decided to go back to the Richard Donner universe which in theory sounded good, but the execution was poor, the look never seems to match Donner's. It comes across as though the director was more interested in paying homage to Donner instead of fleshing out a truly great Superman film. It also didn't help that they had Superman father a child out of wedlock and stalk his ex.

While promoting his new film Crooked Arrow Brandon Routh touches upon the disappointment that was Superman Returns.

"That's pretty evident . . . it didn't go the way I was expecting. I wondered was it me? Was it them? Was there something I could have done differently? You know, you have perceptions of certain things and you are promised certain things, and when they don't pan out the way you expect, you have to readjust."

"Either you wilt in the face of it. Or you get stronger. So I had to realize this may not be the path I was expecting, but maybe it's a better path. So instead of pouting about it, you know, get a stiff upper lip and move on. I am a stronger person for all of it."

"We were supposed to do more (Superman movies) but I don't know what the reality would have been like. I don't know if that would have been better for me or not. The fact is this is where I am now."

"And maybe this is a better place. You know, I turned down a lot of roles because I thought there was going to be another Superman movie and I was very, very protective of that image and that character because he doesn't wear a mask."

That better place Brandon Routh refers to is a starring role in a low-budget knock-off of Disney's The Mighty Ducks. The film, Crooked Arrows, is being sold as the first mainstream film to showcase the sport of Lacrosse, and if you understand The Mighty Ducks reference you can surely guess the plot. A selfish man who grew up on lacrosse is forced to coach a team full of losers, but along the way he rekindles his passion for the sport and cultivates a winning team.

Brandon Routh did an amazing Christopher Reeves impersonation, in an extremely boring Superman movie.

I'd like to see him voice an animated sequel to Superman Returns, another DC direct to DVD movie showing us what Singer wanted to do with his follow up. After all he said his sequel would be all "Wrath of Khan" in terms of epicness and action.

I blame Singer more than Routh.

@Jollem

I agree the movie isn't terrible like Electra, Jonah Hex etc. But for a Superman movie it was just boring. I especially hate how Donner and Singer portrayed Lex, and in Superman Returns there was zero conflict. The saving of the airplane scene was great, but everything else was just a hollow attempt at giving Superman depth.

It's a good movie, only not really a good CBM for its more-drama-than-action take; something people weren't expecting for, especially for an all-for-action character like Superman, who was making his come back after years of disappearance from the big screen. And, Routh did a great job, IMO. It's definitely not his fault, and I've grown to like the guy. I wish he'll get a deserving role in the future.

The curse of Superman once again for any actor that has played the character usually ends up finding there career stall or or worse as we saw with Steve and Christopher Reeves. Was Superman Siegel and Schusters Golem?

I met Brndon on Friday - he seems like a really down to earth guy. I agree that he wasn't given much to do in SR, but I think he did pretty well with the material. Hopefully he'll get another chance at mainstream success - I like the idea of him voicing an animated Supes, but with Man of Steel coming out soon I guess that won't happen as the studio won't want to confuse people over continuity.

The first three seasons of Smallville were actually really good, but from season 4 they started making the wrong decisions and going off on a tangent. I kept watching out of habit and the hope that Clark would eventually fly, then later out of hope we'll finally see him become Superman. ..What a let down! Basically the show should never have gone 10 seasons, they should have ended it after 5 and planned seasons 4 and 5 better. The last 7 seasons went from bad to truly awful!

Superman Returns was not the movie WB needed to reintroduce Superman to modern audiences. It had its moments, the bullet in the eye scene and the plane saving sequence that was amongst the best FX I've ever seen. But on a whole it was a lackluster effort and maybe could have been saved with a sequel steering the character in another direction, to that we'll never know.

SR should not have been a sequel. It should have been a Superman movie started anew.

Brandon is a perfect Supes. His appearance, type, size, constitution - everything is telling about that. Henry Cavill is more like a perfume advertising guy, pretty fair-faced, but - not Superman.
Hope Brandon will have a chance for success in the future.

Kevin Smith may or may not be infantile enough to cast Brandon Routh in a gay role but in the end Brandon is married to Curtney Ford, a stunning actress and Kevin Smith gets to jerk himself a soda with his fat ass to Japanese porn!

Wanted to love this film SO much. Loved the 'homage' (please no puns on homme's) to Christopher Reeve's era, particularly the inclusion of unused audio from Brando's performance - which he would never have allowed in his life time - not without a few million dollars cut. But everything else was off. The colour degrading made it miserable. Superman is about light and positivity. Dark colours work with Batman. That's his world. The 'world' of Metropolis as shown by the staffers at The Daily Planet was filled with dull, grey, lifeless characters - why would Clark Kent BOTHER to work there? Or come BACK to there? The 'actress' who played Lois Lane was one-note throughout. Her new flame (Cyclops escapee) was also dull and one note. This doesn't work, but when the hero of the film is so understated too - it's a vacuum. Superman then became a voyeur - watching Lois at home! Superman only works as a character because he has such HIGH MORAL standards. Then the loose-end chaacter, his illegitimate son? NO! That is NOT Superman! But my greatest annoyance - with ALL the Superman films is: Lex Luthor is ALWAYS played for LAUGHS. And that is where they ALL fail. Luthor HAS to be dark, evil, menacing, a genuine threat to the big boyscout's higher self. Without a credible threat, there is NO point in Superman BEING in the film. Ideally, he should mirror the PERFECTION of Superman's standards and beliefs. When they cast Brando in the original - HE should have been Luthor. He too should have been dark. Not a comic punchline with an even more stupid side-kick; Ottis. If Luthor was a genius - why would he tolerate a moronic sidekick? I hope the new film isn't just a rehash of Donner's first 2 films. I'm already jaded by the reuse of ZOD. Superman has a pantheon of villainous antagonists. Why do they keep using the same, obvious ones? This canon really does need new blood.

Sorry, but for those on hear saying Brandon Routh wasn't givenan opportunity on SR to really shine, please see his other bodies of 'work'. Im sorry, but the guy, as nice as he may be, is not a good actor...at all. I've seen him in 4 or 5 other things and he is wooden in them all. Singer's SR was bad, but that wasn't the only reason Routh wasn't at the top of of his game. People just need to face the fact he isn't a really good actor.
