BATTLE ROYALE Television Series On The CW?

With the success of The Hunger Games it's no surprise that CW is looking to create their own show with a similar premise. According to the The LA Times CW is interested in adapting Koushun Takami's Battle Royale into a television series.

Battle Royale is based on Koushun Takami's 1999 novel, it was adapted into a film. It was also turned into a manga series. The story, children are gassed and then awaken on an island. The 42 children are given food, water, and a random weapon, and told that must kill their classmates until only one survives. They have a time limit, and wear collars that prevent them from escaping. If they try to escape their collars will explode.

The LA Times reports:
In the last few weeks, the CW has had talks with the project's Hollywood representatives about the possibility of turning the property into an English-language show, said a person with knowledge of the situation who was not authorized to speak about it publicly. The talks were preliminary, but if a deal could be reached, the network would acquire rights to Koushun Takami’s underlying novel, then unpack and expand on it for an hour long dramatic series.

When CW was asked about the story they did confirm that discussions had taken place, but would not elaborate. Joyce Jun, an attorney that represents the U.S. rights to Battle Royale says there is no deal in place.

Battle Royale is incredibly violent and disturbing at times as it does show children killing each other. While The Hunger Games avoided actually showing the voilence, Battle Royale thoroughly embaraced, each scene seemed to get more visually brutal as the story went along. And don't take any of that as a negative, Battle Royale is very entertaining and doesn't an excellent job of balancing the violence so that it doesn't consume the story.

I don't see how a extremely violent book/movie could be a TV series. This isn't The Vampires Diaries, it's Battle Royale.

Please no CW can do other things but BR is not something that can be extended past a movie or two

No...just NO. They'd turn this into Hunger Games: The Series. They'd butcher the shit out it. If there ever were a Battle Royale TV series it'd have to be on HBO or Showtime to not be complete shit.

If Beauty & The Beast was any indication, CW will turn this into some teen melodrama. It'd be Dawson's Creek, only Dawson is running around killing other kids off-screen or off-camera. FFFFF...please no.

CW....hell no. They will ruin it. Not that the movie was all that, but without the ultra violence a TV show would be weak.

HBO should jump at this. They would have a chance to make a decent series.

This is one of those ideas that I want to fail. I wouldn't hate so much if it would allow the graphic nature of the story take part, but on basic cable, no. Plus there is likely going to be a lack of diversity or racial stereotypes. So, no thank you.

The idea of a series where each season is a single Battle Royale game could be intriguing. I could see it being GREAT...on HBO or Showtime... but NOT CW

in light of Aurora tragedy, WB TONES DOWN a batman animated flick, then what does CW do..?? they're doing a BATTLE ROYALE TV series...brilliant.

what da heck's wrong with these people..?? the idea is to show LESS on screen violence..and what do they do..?? adapt an ULTRA violent teen tale.

but y'know what's ironic? though, Hunger Games is NO WAY near as violent as BR, the mass killing tragedies tend to keep happening in America and NOT japan. i wonder why that is..??

but what i think is the bigger source of influence for real life violence..not tvs, not the movies..but the current video games that depict those violence acts in their bloodiest fashion in the most graphically realistic look. it's funny no one's mentioned video games industry, after aurora.

No. We are all aware of the type of programming CW produces. They would just turn this into another Hunger Games. Teenage melodrama mixed with toned down and non-bloody violence. Besides, they probably wouldn't even cast Japanese actors for the roles. The entire show would be Americanized.

Ahem CW...

BAD IDEA!!!!!!!

May I repeat?

BAD IDEA!!!!!

Unless CW decides to buck every trend and make a SUPER VIOLENT show on a basic television network this will be a disaster. They just want to make a Hunger Games show without paying the high cost of its franchise fee.

@ EarOne- Well you have funny playing Parappa da Rappa and Mario Cart. I'll continue playing violent FPS games secure in the knowledge that many MILLIONS play them too. And without going out and killing someone afterwards.

People like this Aurora shooter have mental problems. I guess we should all go vegan because of the face eating incident in Miami as well. Give me a break please!

I love the original Battle Royal but can not see this working in any way on network television.

- And after the Dark Knight Rises incident? Yeah right!
