STAR WARS: EPISODE VII Will NOT Be Based On Timothy Zahn's "Thrawn Trilogy"

A source from LucasFilm has told E Online that the story for Star Wars: Episode VII will be completely original. This will come as quite a surprise to die-hard fans that had assumed Timothy Zahn's "Thrawn Trilogy," would be the template for the next trilogy. UPDATE!

Timothy Zahn's "Thrawn Trilogy" is a series of novels that pick up five years after the events depicted in "Return of the Jedi." The books have been mostly embraced by the fans. They have been praised for their outstanding action and the inclusion of new intricate characters that helped expand the Star Wars' universe. The most popular of those new characters is Mara Jade. A complex female character that initially tries to avenger the death of Palpatine by killing Luke Skywalker, but eventually she falls for Luke and becomes his wife and the mother of his son, Ben.

So is that the basis for Episode 7 or not? I've heard directly from LucasFilm and other sources close to the picture, and they say: Definitely not.

"It's an original story," a LucasFilm source tells me.

In other words, forget the Star Wars novels. Forget the graphic novels. Forget everything you think you know about what happens to Luke Skywalker. According to my sources, Episode 7 will literally be nothing you've ever seen or read before from the Star Wars universe.

I also hear from several sources that, no matter what you may hear to the contrary, no director has been officially attached to the project.

UPDATE!
“Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that one possibility being considered is an Avengers-style movie universe with not only Lucas’ planned final trio of films but offshoot movies focusing on individual characters.”

Thanks to Jasper Cresdee-Hyde & Unleash Fanboy for the heads up

I wonder if they even take that direction, you would have to have a new actor playing Luke if it's set within a few years after Jedi.

I for one would like an older Luke mentoring the twins.

There. if it's true, it's shit. but sometimes those rumours, if true, are told a little shady...this is a little too much clear and certain to be already true...i have still a little hope :(

So Star Wars is returning to the big screen and all anyone wants is stories that have been told before?

Go figure.

I'm happy with that.. Something new, great! inspire me and make me feel like a kid again. I don't wanna walk into a cinema completely knowing the plot. an original idea could hopefully turn out awesome!

oh wait, and if its about kyle katarn??? me gusta.

@Kalel219 we would be happy if only after episode VI you could see the void, but we have a continuation that goes even 150 after the episode VI...so we have the beloved continuity that Lucas tried so hard to keep up destroyed, if it was an untouched terrain i would be super-happy!...oh and all these things are valid only if they talk about Skywalkers, obviously ;) otherwise, i think it could be awesome (as i said a darkforces/jedi knight trilogy would be maybe even more awesome ;) )

@ devil - Totally agree!!! Set it 1 thousand years before the events of Ep 1...no need to explain the missing regular cast...

Also seeing a full blown Sith Empire v The Old Republic and Jedis would be awesome!!!

I would like a trilogy of Obi wans college years, nothing has ever been told of his college years, the drinking the girls, the drugs, the parties, do they have fraternities in what ever section of space they are in, and maybe even have a film where Obi-wan visits the future and travels to a modern day earth to bring back a rare breed of grey squirrel because all the red squirrels are ironically being devoured and unless the grey squirrels are saved a huge squirrel shaped death star will blow up the whole universe, there cold be scenes involving Obi-wan using jedi mind tricks on chavs and saving kids from a fari ground ride gone wrong using his light saber and a close up of a kid saying "I gotta get me one of those" it practically writes itself...

It was so obviously never going to be the Zahn trilogy. Structurally they were entirely different from the Star Wars movies.

@Frankie

" we have the beloved continuity that Lucas tried so hard to keep up destroyed"

Hate to back it to you, but very few books are actually "offically" canon. Lucas didn't even have to try to destroy it, as it was never offical (Outside of a few books)

Star Wars fans were always the most deluded of all fanboys. Because Lucas lost all interest and integrity with Star Wars as an artistic creation after The Empire Strikes Back. He made Return of the Jedi to end every ideal he ever had of doing 9/12 episodes an brushed it under the carpet for years as THE TRILOGY! He even made more Ewok films to sell more merchandise rather than go back to the "Adventures of Luke Skywalker" stuff he wanted to get away from. The deep desire for fans to have more resulted in other people paying George for licenses to create new Star Wars with RPG, comics etc. And its because of them, the money they made him and the need to showcase his new digital factory, that Lucas came back with those ridiculous Prequels and Special Editions, NOT because he actually had real story to tell.

This Disney Deal is just him washing his irresponsible hands of the entire shit and leaving the deluded to ponder what's in store from the Mighty Mouse of song and dance! Fanboys will dream on that he always had plans for everything written down somewhere and pick, choose and fight over what they believed was supposed to be cannon in a Star Wars galaxy that never got any real integrity beyond two movies!

In the conversation he had with Kathy Kennedy, GL said that he had stuff already penned for 7, 8 and 9. Then Kethy came back saying that they are looking at writers now.

Hope they at least insert some easter eggs there. Like Dash Rendar, the twins, Kyle Katarn, the remnant or even the old republic. Incredible I'm getting excited for anything Star Wars-related.

hatrick3 - 10/31/2012, 4:13 AM
If Kirk and Spock can be recast and still produce a hit film, the same can be done with Luke, Leia and Han. However, I hope they go in a completely new direction with new characters. The truth is only New Hope and Empire are good films. The last four films are crap. Each made worse by Lucas' constant tinkering. Removing him from the equation may prove to be the best thing for this franchise.

TheNameIsBetty - 10/31/2012, 4:18 AM
@Fogs - It's undeniable. Actually, I always thought they should make KOTOR 2 into a trilogy first, and then adapt the first game as more prequels. Lol

Lucas has already taken queues from the books. I hope they continue to mine from them, like setting up the new Jedi Academy on Yavin 4 and Exar Kun and Mara and stuff like that.

And it's tough to say what the "threat" would be if it's set forty years after ROTJ I think all remnants of the Empire would have been dealt with by then.

I don't like the idea of recasting, but after watching Drive, Gosling would make an awesome hardened Jedi.

Ugh idk how to feel about all this.....I was so excited at first cuz Disney has done some amazing things with Marvel and I was hoping the same for SW. However I was really wanting them the use the stories that have already been developed over the years. i understand they prob couldnt go with the thrawn story cuz i want Mark, Harrison, Carrie, etc... to reprise their roles and obvisously they are much older than 5 yrs. However they shouldnt just ignore these stories the fan base has grown to love. They need to incorporate them some how or they will piss off a huge fan community. I want to see most of the following: Mara Jade, Anakin Solo, Jacen and Jaina Solo, Prince Xizor, Ben Skywalker, and hell maybe even Leia as a sith.....JUST DO IT RIGHT DISNEY...PLEASE DONT LET US DOWN!

I love the Thrawn Trilogy, and it's actually the reason why I'm STILL a Star Wars fan, but, yeah, it's kind of a no-brainer that WOULDN'T be the next movie. That trilogy takes place 5 years after ROTJ, not THIRTY YEARS. Still stoked, though!

Mark would be about the same age as Guiness was when he played Obi Wan. They could place it a little bit in the future and use children, or young grandchildren and still use some of the original cast as minor roles.
