Mark Hamill Discusses Disney's Acquisition Of LucasFilm & The New STAR WARS Films

George Lucas surprised everyone yesterday when he handed over the keys to his Star Wars franchise and the rest of LucasFilm to the entertainment giant, Disney. Hit the jump to see what Luke Skywalker (Hamill) had to say about the shocking news.

Entertainment Weekly was able to nab a quick interview with Mark "Luke Skywalker" Hamill. When asked about Disney purchasing LucasFilm, Hamill says he was caught off guard like all of us. But the other news that there would be future Star Wars films was not a surprise to him at all. Mark reveals to EW that he and Carrie Fisher met with the bearded Jedi, George Lucas, just this past summer. During this meeting Lucas let them in on a secret, plans were already in motion to make Episodes VII, VIII, and IX.

Entertainment Weekly: So you met with George this past summer and he told you about his plans to make another trilogy?

Hamill: Yeah, last August, he asked Carrie (Fisher) and I to have lunch with him and we did. I thought he was going to talk about either his retirement or the Star Wars TV series that I’ve heard about—which I don’t think we were going to be involved in anyway, because that takes place between the prequels and the ones we were in and, if Luke were in them, he’d be anywhere from a toddler to a teenager so they’d get an age-appropriate actor—or the 3-D releases. So when he said, “We decided we’re going to do Episodes VII, VIII, and IX,” I was just gobsmacked. “What? Are you nuts?!” [laughs] I can see both sides of it. Because in a way, there was a beginning, a middle, and an end and we all lived happily ever after and that’s the way it should be—and it’s great that people have fond memories, if they do have fond memories. But on the other hand, there’s this ravenous desire on the part of the true believers to have more and more and more material. It’s one of those things: people either just don’t care for it or are passionate about it. I guess that defines what cult movies are all about. We’ll see. I’m anxious to know what’s going on, but the main story [yesterday] was the sale to Disney. I have mixed feelings about that, but they haven’t done badly by Marvel and the Muppets and Pixar. It’s one of those big decisions that at first seems unusual but then the more you look at it, the more it makes sense.

EW: When you had lunch with George, did he get into any details with you about where the story would go in the next three films, or whether you would have a part in them?

Hamill: Well, no, he was just talking about writers and the fact that he wouldn’t be directing. I guess he wanted us to know before everybody else knew. He said, “Now you can’t tell anybody!” [laughs] Even now I’m nervous about saying anything. I just don’t know!

@AlienVersusPredator Mark Hamill has been voicing the Joker for 20 years. I'm sure he was dying for George to phone him up...
Carrie on the other hand... she's done nothing, except guest star on Family Guy a couple of times.

@SUPERMAN2013 and AlienVersusPredator

think before you open your mouth and insert foot. Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher both have lucrative careers outside of Star Wars and Lucas. Do your research. Hamill's got a GREAT run as a voice actor and especially well known as the voice of the Joker in the original Batman animated series AND Arkham Asylum/Arkham City games. Same thing with Carrie with her varied body of work.

In the end, you twits don't know shit.

mark will be in it, im sure of it

it only makes sense, i cant see them skipping everything and heading for old republic, it will mean less revenues for disney, they want the young audience to go back and see and buy the old episodes and get hooked, from a marketing standpoint it doesn't make sense

ACira, Carrie may not be super active, but she has done VO AND guested on some TV series and made for TV movies. Her recent work includes a VO on the game Dishonored.

How can they make an Old Republic trilogy? That'd really [frick] up the naming of the movies, since they'd be set before Episode 1,2 and 3, so they'd become the new episode 1,2 and 3, while Phantom Menace - ROTS would become Episode 4-6, then A New Hope - Jedi would become Episodes 7-9, plus the Prequel trilogy would become something like the Mid-Prequel trilogy while the Old Republic films become the new Prequel trilogy... see, makes no sense.

Better to just not make new Star Wars films. You know what Star Wars sequel I do want? The Force Unleashed 3.

I still vote for David Lyons as Luke. But, I respect Hamill enough to say: Good personal trainer, maybe some hgh (like Stallone), and it's a possibility for him.

In the most recent pictures of him, he looks more and more like Palpatine. Would be a very dark and juicy way to include Hamil in the next few flicks. Have him go to the Dark Side and then have Han Solo and Leia's son go after him...

Now this is a cast I absolutely would not mind seeing reprise their roles as long as GL is not writing or directing. Of course they would need to get Carrie Fisher to drop major poundage, but I don't think anyone is expecting her to get into her slave bikini again any time soon. This is really awesome news that George is finally stepping down. Everyone knew that Star Wars was doomed as long as he was in charge, but I don't think anyone had any type of hope that he would finally get out of the friggin way. If only he would have done this before those last three piece of shit movies. Hopefully Disney understands the level of damage control that needs to happen here, because it's MASSIVE.

Im all for a new trilogy that shows Luke rebuild the Jedi council. and given todays technology, there is no reason they cant just go the Avatar route and completely computer animate Luke to be the age they need him to be. Just get Hamill and the others to do the voice acting and physical acting. Then overlay with the latest technology, no one could tell the difference.
It could look seamless

Question: If Mickey is Luke and Minnie is Leia, is Goofy Han and Pluto Chewbacca?

I would assume they would move on the the Timothy Zahn novels. Heir To The Empire is widely regarded as the official-unofficial continuation of the storyline. I have to say I'm surprised as anyone by the move. After their work with the Marvel stories I feel they will be careful as fanboys will eat them alive. Good luck to the Mouse House!

I think try and get mark and ford, set it 40 years later with luke rebuilding the jedi council. Have a small surviving sect of sith out there then boom the lightsaber war i've always wanted on screen but never got. (i say have ol princess dead cause that actress is a wreck. )
