Budget For The New MORTAL KOMBAT Movie Revealed

So, how much money will director Kevin Tancharoen have to play with when he begins filming the next Mortal Kombat live-action featured film? Find out after the jump as Warner Bros. executive Lance Sloan reveals the answer.

"The other thing that's important to probably highlight is that we're preparing right now for the featured film with the same kid. Kevin Tancharoen directed the digital series for us. Before that he did a renegade video that he put up on YouTube. And we sent the piracy people after him, to take it down and put him in jail. And cut to a couple months later he was directing the digital series for us. And now he is at the helm of a forty, fifty million dollar feature film." - Lance Sloan

Well there you go, Mr. Sloan has estimated a budget between $40 million to $50 million. To put that into some sort of perspective, the first live-action Mortal Kombat film that starred Christopher Lambert only had a budget of $18 million and pulled in $122 million at the worldwide box office.

Possible Plot - "The live-action reboot will follow a lowly unlucky supermarket employee who discovers that he has out of this world powers and must decide between good and evil, even though the evil side has helped him discover his true potential and who he really is." - Bloody Disgusting

Hope is not too much realistic like that shit show. MK must be as fantastic and gritty as possible.

If it's the cast from the first MK game, then I GUESS that budget is ok. IDK about the plot though.

and if WB was smart, they would do it like MARVEL, make solo movies about Liu Kang & Kung Lao, Sub Zero, Raiden & Sonya and maybe kitana....

I'm excited for this movie but [frick] they never say anything about it. We haven't heard a single update for a long ass time. Hopefully the movie is good but my anticipation is dying with each passing month of no news. Hopefully it's great though.

Well, let's hope that MK Legacy Season 2 helps Kevin Tancharoen hone his craft more before the movie. Plus the webseries wasn't realistic at all.......it just wasn't in the tournament setting and fireballs weren't being shot 24/7. So that's not a problem at the moment imo. I'm more worried on if this will be a more quality effort and if Season 2 will be a more consistent effort.

Scorpion's always been my favorite MKer but the one i'm really looking forward to is a kombatant I've waited YEARS to see on the big screen since MKIII on the SNES

I don't mind the budget. I mean, look at Neveldine/Taylor. Highest budget they've had is 75 million dollars and they look really good for those kinds of budget.

Kevin Tancharoen is a fan of the series, I like that. I don't like everything else about his vision.

1: Realism: ABSOLUTELY NO! Yes, I understand as far as believability in CERTAIN characters. Goro, Reptile and Baraka are characters that must stay unbelieveable.

2: Mispronunciation: Watch the Kitana/Mileena episode of Mortal Kombat: Legacy, my case is rested.

3: Mortal Kombat: Rebirth: The only enjoyable things about that short film is the acting and the fight scene. Everything else stripped Mortal Kombat of what made it so great.

I have since restarted since I had to crash my computer a couple of weeks ago, I am hard at work on my Mortal Kombat script that does better justice to the storylines and characters of the Mortal Kombat universe than anything Tancharoen has done to the franchise. If the trailer for the reboot looks like crap, I will buy the dvd only to take a dump on it. While I like, Mortal Kombat: Legacy, I don't consider anything the director has made to be part of the Mortal Kombat mythos.

You ruin my favorite videogame franchise, I will crap on your vision. Literally.

I'm glad their moving forward with the MK reboot. It was going to be released in theaters in 2010, but the plans were scrapped.

Don't get me wrong I love the MK franchise, I think I've played every game. But, I don't have high hopes for this movie. Especially with that low of a budget. I was 12 when MK1 game came out and the first movie is one of my guilty pleasures. I still remember sitting at my grandmas house and seeing the tralier for the movie and flipping out. Seeing that snake/spear comming from Scorpion and flying thru the bamboo forest, it gave me chills. Kinda weird that that memory has stayed with me, I hope I feel that way when I see the tralier for this one too.

genesis609: NO! Absolutely no! Mortal Kombat isn't a superhero franchise. It (like any other adaptation or just script) has to be carefully done. It can be put into a trilogy based off of the storylines of the first three games while maintaining more substance over violence and still be able to add characters to the franchise, even ones that came in the later games, characters like Kenshi. You don't need to have movies for each character, that's about as bad an idea as letting Kevin Tancharoen directing the reboot.

That plot synopsis sounds like total CRAP.

"A lowly supermarket clerk..."

Get the hell out of town with that crap. There has got to be at least 20 different possibilities other than this brain fart idea. Jeeez.

Mortal Kombat is 1 franchise that will [frick]ing FAIL if it sticks to realism.

At most it can have element's of realism within it, but it's pure fantasy an shouldn't be anything other.

Scorpion, Sub-Zero are a must an should have there powers. Along with all the rest like Reptile, Smoke an many others.

The only character i don't if they [frick] up is Johnny Cage because he just sucks.

mortal kombat will just never work as well on film as it has in video games.

these hollywood folks invest a shit-ton of money into adapting things that have worked in other mediums. but sometimes, it's just a bad fit.

the mortal kombat universe works best in video game form.
same for dragonball and bleach. they shouldn't be made into films. they work best as anime+manga.

$40-50 million today is equivalent to how much it took to make MK back in 1995, so I'm not expecting much of an improvement.

Awful plot, terrible director, and the web-series was overrated. Destined to be straight to DVD. I hope that I'm wrong, but I doubt it.
