JURASSIC PARK: Making Of The Venom-Spitting Dinosaur (Video)

Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park will be re-released in 3D April 5th. To help get you in the mood for some pre-historic goodness, Stan Winston School, has put together another amazing behind-the-scenes video that features the making of the animatronic Dilophosaurus.

Mechanical FX Designer Rick Galinson had only been working at the Stan Winston Studio for about a year when he raised his hand and offered to work on the animatronic Dilophosaurus (aka The Spitter). In the video below Rick provides insightful commentary over some amazing never-before-seen footage of the making of The Spitter puppet. That scene can be video below as well.

Anyone that has watched the 1993 film, The Spitter, earns its nickname from a thrilling scene involving the deceitful computer geek, Dennis Nedry, played by Wayne Knight ("Seinfeld). The creature attacks by spitting it's venom, a dark brown tar-like substance, into Nedry's eyes, which blinds him. Revealed in the behind-the-scenes video below, that spit was created out of methacyl and K-Y® Jelly with some food coloring. Also of note, the animatronic puppet actually did spit, using a paintball mechanism.

Not so fun fact: There is no evidence that Dilophosaurs had venom glands.

Steven Spielberg's phenomenally successful sci-fi adventure thriller is graced by state-of-the-art special effects from the team of Stan Winston, Phil Tippett and Michael Lantieri from George Lucas's Industrial Light & Magic. The film follows two dinosaur experts -- Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Dr. Ellie Sattler Laura Dern) -- as they are invited by eccentric millionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) to preview his new amusement park on an island off Costa Rica. By cloning DNA harvested from pre-historic insects, Hammond has been able to create living dinosaurs for his new Jurassic Park, an immense animal preserve housing real brachiosaurs, dilophosaurs, triceratops, velociraptors, and a Tyrannosaur Rex. Accompanied by cynical scientist Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), who is obsessed with chaos theory, and Hammond's two grandchildren (Ariana Richards and Joseph Mazzello), they are sent on a tour through Hammond's new resort in computer controlled touring cars. But as a tropical storm hits the island, knocking out the power supply, and an unscrupulous employee (Wayne Knight) sabotages the system so that he can smuggle dinosaur embryos out of the park, the dinosaurs start to rage out of control. Grant then has to bring Hammond's grandchildren back to safety as the group is pursued by the gigantic man-eating beasts.

IMAX press event

This is what I saw this morning:

Jurassic Park 3D: This is the four minutes playing in front of Oz IMAX 3D. This is a really great conversion and I can’t wait to see this.

G.I. Joe Retaliation: We saw the mountain fight in the trailer in it’s entirety. It’s [frick]ing awesome and the 3D wasn’t bad. I would say peep this in 2D. Hope this flick turns out good.

Oblivion: Saw the opening 6 minutes and this only reinforced that this is gonna be something special. I hope this flick turns out good. It looks like it’s specially formatted for IMAX. Or maybe it’s just me.

Iron Man 3: we saw 20 minutes. The 3D is bad, yea this has the possibility of being the best Marvel Cinematic Universe film yet. Shane Black is the secret ingredient. I’ll be honest seeing those 20 minutes made me want to see the film even more .

Star Trek into Darkness: The 3D is incredible and the IMAX footage is jaw dropping. We saw 30 minutes and 30 minutes is better than the entire last movie.

After Earth: We saw the newly released trailer. As I said before it’s an improvement by massive bounds over the teaser, but the names and accents still suck. I’ll peep it at my press screening.

Man of Steel: This part of the presentation was irrelevant to me for obvious reasons. See these 10 minutes just made me want to see the actually movie again.

Pacific Rim: We got to see 10 minutes. The fight between the Jager and whatever monster that was is crazy. This shit is easily gonna bank dough and start a franchise. del Toro you did again

300: Rise of an Empire: We saw a teaser trailer in 3D and yes, it’s just as stylized as the previous film. It’ll be interesting to see if this is good or not…

Riddick: We saw 10 minutes from this. All I can say is I’m glad we’re back in R-rated Pitch Black territory. This shit is gritty and nasty.

Gravity: We saw the 17 minute opening shot in 3D. HOLE. LEE. SHIT!!! This is gonna be our generation’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Alfonso really is pushing the boundaries on cinema. And it does feel as if you’re floating in space.

Seventh Son: We saw a teaser in 3D. Don’t know what to make of it as I’ve never read the books. But it looks really interesting.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire: This shit was 10 times better than the first due to no shaky cam shit. And the IMAX footage fits the arena like a glove. Now I’m hyped for this shit as it’s my 2nd favorite book in the trilogy.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug: First, this was in 24fps 3D thank God. Now we got to see 5 minutes of Bilbo’s face-off with Smuag the dragon. Smuag looks incredible. I mean wow…

@nailbiter111, yeah it's going to be a great year at the movies, just wish marvel could make a film with great 3D or just stick to IMAX, not use a bad 3D when films like Star Trek INto Darkness look amazing by comparison. But overall a good movie is all I care about.

Now this is what Hollywood movie magic is all about, practical effects are always awesome but now everything has to be CGI'd into films. I can understand having to CGI some things into movies but when u make an entire film that way and the only thing real is the actors, kind of takes sum stuff away from watching a film...thats just me :]

What's the deal with JP 4. We saw an announced release date of 2014 and nothing else since. Will they be using JP 3D as their chance to announce something on this front? I don't expect anyone to actually know the answer to this question, I'm just curious.
