Last month, it was announced that Carter Burwell was composing the score for his first superhero film,
Thor: The Dark World. Carter is a veteran to film scores; including work on
True Grit, Fargo, Where the Wild Things Are, and
No Country for Old Men. Many had assumed that Patrick Doyle, the composer for the first
Thor film, would return, but that didn't happen.
So what's going on? Well, a few days ago some members of
Film Score Monthly noticed that Carter Burwell had removed
Thor: The Dark World imagery and information from his
website. Soon after,
Ford A. Thaxton stepped in with a rather shocking bit of info:
"FYI, I checked with a REALLY WELL INFORMED SOURCE and it was confirmed. Carter is off the film. It also appears so is the director who seems to have been asked to take a long vacation until AFTER the film opens. I've head one replacement name being mentioned which would be a very interesting replacement and is a VERY TALENTED composer as well. We'll see if he gets the gig." - Ford A. Thaxton
Normally a member's comment on a message board doesn't carry much weight, but after digging around Mr. Thaxton has quite the
reputation for posting info that ends up being spot on. Of course, that doesn't mean that the info above is right, and I would treat it as merely a rumor.
Another bit of info:
Christopher Willis, who helped compose music for
Twilight: Breaking Dawn 2 and
X-Men First Class, tweeted just a week ago that he was beginning to work on
Thor: The Dark World with
Carter Burwell. It would seem odd that he would come on board with so much rumored turmoil. Or, quite possibly there is no turmoil, and this just an internet rumor that is gonna get out of hand.
THOR: THE DARK WORLD is being directed by Alan Taylor ("Game of Thrones") and will be released November 8, 2013. Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Rene Russo, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Zachary Levi, Jaimie Alexander, Ray Stevenson, Kat Dennings, Christopher Eccleston, and Idris Elba.
