IRON MAN 3: Making Of The Air Force One Skydiving Scene

MTV has unveiled a new Iron Man 3 behind-the-scenes clip that will be included on the DVD and Blu-ray copy, September 24th. It features that 'barrel of monkeys' scene, in which Tony Stark attempts a mid-air rescue of Air Force One passengers.

When a bunch of passengers are sucked out of a hole in Air Force One at 30,000 feet, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) leaps into action. In order to capture that action sequence Shane Black recruited the Red Bull skydiving team. The director made a bold decision by opting to go with live-action actors instead of digital versions. It took the film crew six days to shoot the skydiving scene.

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3″ pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Iron Man 3 was directed by Shane Black, from a screenplay written by Drew Pearce. The film opened in theaters May 3, 2013. It stars: Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark), Gwyneth Paltrow (Virginia Potts), Don Cheadle (Col. James Rhodes), and Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin.

Only part that makes the movie worthwhile watching

I've felt sorta robbed of discussing the things I think are the most interesting in this movie, because the Mandarin outcry has drowned any rational conversation about it online. I wonder if it'll ever be possible to talk in a more civilised manner about it. :(

One of the (if not THE) stupidest scene of any modern CBM.

I loved this scene, until I found out he wasn't in the suit.

If you're going to be a superhero, part of that is putting your life at risk and not sit back on a boat and remote control an armored suit. That's just laziness.

Best action sequence of the movie and of most movies this summer. Only haters and fangirls disagree with me.

And fettastic is still waiting on a Flash movie. While I'll be watching mulitple movies next year, Fettastic will be butt hurt and crying about Iron Man 3 and the lack of a DC Universe over the next 5 years.

If only.....he was actually in the suit!

@fettastic

I guess primarily I want to have a discussion that doesn't hinge on whether it was or wasn't shitty. I think you can deconstruct and discuss components of even the worst movies around, but as long as it all just circles back to people feeling betrayed by the Mandarin depiction, it's difficult to have a meaningful conversation.

Give me one good reason why Tony couldn't be in the suit?

I'll wait...

Shit movie. Damn 3 shit films in 3 years. Green Lantern, The Amazing Spider-Man, Iron Man 3.

The dude at the top of the chain of people, and/or several other people within the human chain, would have had their arms ripped right out of their sockets.

Uggghhh.

I had an issues with this scene years ago when we got shots of them filming this sequence.

@Azazel1

And that statement would be a meaningful contribution if my point wasn't that it's irrelevant whether the movie is "shit" or not.

I'm not interested in finding out what people think of the quality of the movie -- I'm interested in discussing themes in it.
LEVITIKUZ
LEVITIKUZ - 8/16/2013, 12:36 PM
The theme was who is Iron Man? The suit or Tony.

I gotta say, the answer is truly Jarvis is Iron Man.

Why did Zod want Lois Lane on the ship? I'll wait.

Zod was hoping to get a threesome with him, Lois, and Faroa. Next question?

@LEVIKUTZ

Yeah, that was the theme of the entire movie. It basically extrapolated from Cap's question in Avengers. I'm a little more curious about the specifics.

I'd be really interested to hear takes on "the mechanic" element of the movie though. Maybe it's just a broken sub-plot, but the insomnia and panic attacks Tony was suffering from were very vaguely followed up on. It kinda struck a nerve with me, though, because the notion that this pragmatic, logical guy would be in such a place emotionally and psychologically after seeing what he did when he went through the portal feels very true.

He's not a scientist in the sense of necessarily being open to things he doesn't understand - he's not Banner - he's someone who seems to derive a sense of identity from knowing what makes things tick. Understanding his work and his creations seems like a source of confidence and peace. His agency in building things lends a sense of control.

So when he's facing this impossible thing in Avengers, it makes sense that his entire world view would be challenged.

I've only seen it once, so maybe I just didn't catch it, but do you reckon the resolution to his anxiety addressed those things at all? He's told to build things to deal with his panic attacks, but there's also the notion in the movie that he's compulsively building things to *regain* the sense of control, but it's highlighted as a problem.

I dunno, I'd love someone's take on this.

@Greengo,

Yet you're okay that a normal human in an Iron suit is able to keep his legs and arms from breaking while flying and banking at incredible speeds.
Greengo

Lol.

I'm not going to stop watching CBM's because Iron Man 3 was a piece of shit.

It wasn't long after that travesty that MoS came along and totally redeemed 2013's CBM's.

Hopefully T:TDW will be the gravy.

@Greengo Man of steel wasn't really that great. It was just meh, nothing special. IM3 was much better, bold, and refreshing.

Although I was deeply disappointed in the film, there were plenty of scenes that worked well. I'll admit that the skydiving scene was exciting and well constructed.

Only this site complain about IM3.Most websites I know think MOS is the worst CBM this year.Why are comicbook writers not complaining about IM3? But they do complain about MOS.

@Greengo You think this is the stupidest scene in any cbm? A little bit of false physics makes it the STUPIDEST scene? Really? Yet you're totally ok with every other unrealistic and absurd things that happen in all the other cbms? You're so full of shit.

@Paris: There is fantsy, sci-fi; which I love.... and then there's sci-bullshit; which I tolerate occasionally except when it tries to pass for sci-fi and actively attempts to insult the viewer's intelligence.

The Iron Man armor falls under sci-fi.

@Hydra: try harder.
