The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, on an epic quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

Having survived the beginning of their unexpected journey, the Company continues East, encountering along the way the skin-changer Beorn and a swarm of giant Spiders in the treacherous forest of Mirkwood. After escaping capture by the dangerous Wood-elves, the Dwarves journey to Lake-town, and finally to the Lonely Mountain itself, where they must face the greatest danger of all - a creature more terrifying than any other; one which will test not only the depth of their courage but the limits of their friendship and the wisdom of the journey itself - the Dragon Smaug.

Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, with Martin Freeman in the central role of Bilbo Baggins, and Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield. The international ensemble cast is led by Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace, Luke Evans, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt, and Orlando Bloom as Legolas. The film also stars (in alphabetical order) John Bell, Manu Bennett, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Lawrence Makoare, Sylvester McCoy, Graham McTavish, Dean O'Gorman, Mikael Persbrandt, and Aidan Turner.

Yet another bad design choice from The Hobbit

BULLSHIT!! Seriously, I don't often call things shit when I haven't seen too much of them, but he looks like shit. God, Beorn is one of my 3 favourite characters in the whole of Tolkien's Middle-earth, and this is what they made of him?!

[frick]!

If it weren't for Freeman's Bilbo and me wanting to see Cumberbatch's Smaug there would be no chance I'd buy ticket for DoS...

Yep, pretty much what I expected. PJ has to make everything as silly and dumbed down as possible. Looks nothing like the burly, powerful, badass character I imagined in the book. Yet another strike for PJ, surprise surprise!

I always imagined Beorn looking bigger.

Well, at least they got Legolas and Tamriel right. I mean, those characters were more important in the book anyway. (-_-)'

I have no problem with this design. Does it look unconventional? Sure, but Id rather have unconventional than a retread of Hagrid from Harry Potter. "Why does he have silly hair" you say? Did you ever think that its so there is a visual connection between his "human" and bear forms?

@P90

Well, Beorn kinda IS like a bulked up, more intimidating Hagrid type visually. Or, of course it's rather the other way 'round - Hagrid being a chubby, mild-mannered version of Beorn.

Also I don't see much of a visual connection between his "human" form and the bear form we've seen.

eh, its ok. Nothing to complain about. Kinda was hoping for more of a Paul Bunyon look but this works

Well Gandalf is like 7 foot tall in the movies so having Beorn standing another foot above him means he will be the size of the bear when he transforms. That's all I was worried about. Phew...

Looks okay. Many times seeing something in motion with vocal track and everything can make a huge difference. I will wait until I see the film for final judgment.

So you want Billy Mays to play Beorn. I hate to be the one to break this to you but...

....... yet ANOTHER terrible design? Sounds like you're just picky. I'm not a big fan either of the design but I do this thing called "getting over it" and moving on so I can enjoy the rest of the movie. Not a big deal.

Now if he acts differently then in the book THAT I could see being a problem. So far from the description of the book the only thing wrong it is his beard ISN'T black. We can't tell what body type he is from this picture. Does nobody realize Beorn might be STANDING next to Gandalf on his own feet. That's a big dude.
Kyos
Kyos - 11/2/2013, 7:49 PM
This design still pisses me off like hell. Beorn could and should have been one of the easiest characters to adapt visually, and they made him a gorram grey Grinch.

I really believe they realized how much he sucks, as they completely keep his human form out of trailers and official stills so far.
