THE DARK KNIGHT RISES: How Christopher Nolan Kept Bruce Wayne's "Death" A Secret

At the end of The Dark Knight Rises the citizens of Gotham as well as the entire world believe that Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) was a casualty of Bane's occupation. A funeral scene at Wayne Manor took place, but see how Nolan kept Bruce Wayne's death a secret.

In this clip from The Dark Knight Trilogy: Ultimate Collector's Edition Christopher Nolan explains the tricks that he implemented to keep Bruce Wayne's demise a secret from the public. Before the film came out there were reports that a funeral scene had been filmed at Wollaton Hall in Nottingham, which is the setting for Wayne Manor in the film. Many people were trying to guess which character had died, and when that scene took place in the film. After the film was released it was revealed that the scene was for Bruce Wayne's funeral. It's quite an emotional scene as Commissioner Gordon (played by Gary Oldman) recites a passage from Charles Dickens' classic, "A Tale of Two Cities" and Alfred Pennyworth (played by Michael Caine) breaks down in tears apologizing to Bruce's parents, "I'm so sorry. I failed you. You trusted me, and I failed you."

It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act. But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.

The Dark Knight Rises was directed by Christopher Nolan, from a screenplay written by Christopher and Jonathan Nolan. The cast included: Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon, Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John "Robin" Blake and Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate/Talia al Ghul.

To bad they didn't keep him dead...... movie was such a mess, yet still great. Loved it, and hated it at the same time. Either way the trilogy was great.

Perfect Nolan movie, much better than TDK. The ending was classic Nolan - keep 'em guessing, bring on the debate. Perfection!

I have no problems respecting the love for this movie, but I don't think I'll ever truly understand it.

For all the whining about TDKR last summer over trivial garbage, it wipes the floor with every CBM movie we got this year.

Seriously watch TDKR and MOS together. How the flip can you say the latter is on par with the former?

Batman Begins all the way, one of my favourite CBM and still one of the best origin movies with IM close by, I can't stand TDK and TDKR. TDK was more like a Villain origin story what I didn't really like and TDKR hardly had Batman in it and was dragged on for to long.

Nolan's films always have huge plot holes with little to no explanation, and people call him a genius

Rises is like Return of the Jedi, it is good but could been better like the first two.

@ALmight actually... good point... why did he fake Bruce Wayne's death as well as Batman's? Very few people knew of his dual identity, and all those who did were his allies (as his enemies had all died)... Batman was dead as far as the public was concerned, so that also would've made the idea of Bruce and Batman being the same guy less likely in their eyes (seeing as there are so many "coincidences" that Gotham seemed blind to, such as Bruce Wayne returning to Gotham right before Batman first appeared, and Bruce Wayne emerging from his eight year recluse in Wayne Manor right before Batman returned from an eight year hiatus, and the fact that Bruce was the only person with the money and motives to become Batman in the first place)...

Plus, if Bruce remained in Gotham, he could have helped train John Blake to take over as the new Batman.

The only reason I can think of is his bankruptcy, but that's hardly a reason to fake your own death, and surely he would have been able to report to someone that he'd been a victim of identity theft or something? Assuming the money was even that important to him... Hell, he shacked up with the cat burglar who robbed him, surely she could rob the money back for him!

Damn, this movie's grown on me a lot over the last year, but it seems new plot holes or gaps in logic will always appear...

So much work to hide a secret do to leaks.
I like the ending. Finally a superhero film with a begin middle and end it doesn't go on forever the story was done. Best superhero trilogy!!!!
