"Star Trek Into Darkness" contains over 1600 visual effects shots, created by Industrial Light & Magic, Pixomondo, Atomic Fiction and Kelvin Optical Inc. In this reel, we'll take a look at ILM's work which encompassed virtually every tool and discipline in our effects arsenal.

The opening sequence sequence of "Star Trek into Darkness" is a great example of the varied visual effects challenges faced by ILM: large digital environments (with plenty of organic elements), creatures and digital doubles, animation, ships and a tremendous amount of simulation work (lava, smoke, water, etc.) Here we explore what it took to create the "Red Planet", Nibiru for "Into Darkness".

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organisation has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS was directed by J.J. Abrams ("Super 8"), from a screenplay written by Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Returning for the sequel are Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Zoë Saldana, and Anton Yelchin. Joined by new cast members Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller. Now available at your local Blockbuster.

Eff this movie. Abrams and his crap friends/team (Orci, Kurtzman, Lindelof) had 3 1/2 years to write this crap?! No need for Khan (reveal didn't mean shit) and I never even watched any of the series.

The visual effects for this film where stunning. I loved STID in wasnt better than Star Trek(2009) but the film was still good.

I really like this movie a lot.

I'm assuming its just people who were fans of the show who hated it.

Am I right or wrong?

I've been a big fan of J.J. Abrams since I watched the first season of Lost. Ever since then I've watched all his movies (Mission Impossible 3, Star Trek, Super 8, Stark Trek Into Darkness) and soon I'll be in line waiting for Star Wars: Episode VII.

I would like to reiterate earzmundo's point, I feel we haven't explored the subject in its entierty.

We need to go deeper.

JohnnyRoss: fans of the show hated because its too recycled, it´s a tropes movie.

1 - evil racist admiral Robocop (was seen on the last episode of Star Trek Enterprise)

2 - enhanced humans (seen on the last season of Enterprise and in the old series)

3 - jump into space (seen on Nemesis)

4 - Ship crashing on planet (Seen on Generations)

5 - Warp speed chase (Dark Frontier:Star Trek Voyager)

6 - helicopter shooting people in reunion (also Voyager)

etc etc
