First Reactions To THE RAID 2 Are Off The Richter Scale

Ever since a sequel was announced for Gareth Evans' The Raid, everyone has been wondering if the director could duplicate that success. Well, based on first reactions it is safe to say that The Raid 2: Berandal has surpassed even their highest expectations.

If you thought the no-holds-barred action sequences Gareth Evans served up in 2011's The Raid: Redemption were exceptional, then you are in for quite a treat when the follow-up, The Raid 2: Berandal lands in theaters this March. Last night at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, The Raid 2 made its highly-anticipated premiere. As the credits began to roll the audience jumped off their seats to give the film and it's creator a well deserved standing ovation. It should also be noted, that there was a bit of a scare. A member of the audience collapsed during the viewing and an emergency unit had to be called. Hopefully he is fine and we wish him a speedy recovery.

“Picking up right where the first film ends, ‘The Raid 2′ follows Rama (Uwais) as he goes undercover and infiltrates the ranks of a ruthless Jakarta crime syndicate in order to protect his family and uncover the corruption in his own police force.“

Cast: Iko Uwais, Yayan Ruhian, Julie Estelle, Kenichi Endo, Ryuhei Matsuda, Kazuki Kitamura
Directed & Written By Gareth Evans

Lands In Theaters March 28, 2014

"To deal with THE RAID 2, the MPAA is gonna need something heavier than NC-17. And probably some adult diapers."

"RAID 2 echoes everything from Kubrick to Kurosawa. Ambitious plot is matched by deliriously intense fight sequences. #Sundance" Jason Gorber

Okay woah dude seriously your comparing Gareth Evans to two of the greatest directors of all time Stanley Kubrick and Akira Kurosawa. I am sorry this guy has done exactly 5 movies and only 2 of them have gotten any kind of critical acclaim. Your comparing that to Kubrick who made Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket, Shining, 2001 A Space Odyssey, etc... and Kurosawa who made Seven Samurai, Rashoman, Yojimbo, Ran, etc... I am sorry unless this is the most amazing movie of all time that absolutely changes cinema as we know it for all time then no that statement is one of the most ignorant statements I have ever heard and how are you a film critic.

Wow ridiculous...I don't care if the first one and this one went crazy with action and martial arts, these type of movies will always be forgettable and passed along because of the mediocre story, dialog, and plot. The characters I will say though we're interesting in the first Raid but everything else was just meh. Like every other big action film (Pacific Rim), people will always hype it up as the greatest thing since slice cheese. Maybe it's because I'm more of a story/character guy but action just for the sake of it, doesn't appeal to me at all. Matrix and TDK will always hold a high spot for me in that sense. Next to Kubrick? Wow what the hell are you smoking, son?

With that being said, I will definitely check out this sequel and see what Garth delivers this time around.

um, pesmerga and rokyn do you guys know what "echoes" means? at no time did anybody say evans had reached the level of kubrick or kurosawa... they say the film ECHOES those directors' work. as in pays homage to, reminds one of, contains similar elements, provides a similar look or tone, etc.

for anyone that hasn't seen it, Merantau is on netflix. lightweight plot but worth watching.

Fair enough. As if his work reminisces someone of Kubrick revolutionary work then yes in terms of actions movies, but no way in hell do they compare.

"They say the film ECHOES those directors' work. as in pays homage to, reminds one of, contains similar elements, provides a similar look or tone, etc."

"They" more like "he" said. I'm sorry there's nothing in the first Raid that reminded me of Kubrick. Not one bit. Though I WILL say that Garth was revolutionary in terms of making an action film like Kubrick was with science fiction and other works but in any other sense no.

@figuremaniac

Meh IMO I've seen better action films than the first Raid but like I said I'm a little biased since I'm not an action type of guy. And I never got moments of like, "this is totally Kubrick type of directing". Like I said it's merely an opinion. It's a bit of a stretch don't you think?
figuresmaniac
figuresmaniac - 1/22/2014, 4:50 AM
@rockyn
I agree, the Raid will not reach the level of Kubrick, but that is not what he meant.
Rokyn
Rokyn - 1/22/2014, 4:56 AM
Exactly, but in the first Raid he did pull some new creative aspects in terms of action films. Like Kubrick did with science fiction. If I was judging it on straight up action, then hell yeah it's A+, but as an overall film it's a meh for me.

The first one left me so pumped from the sheer action.
I hadn't felt that way since watching JCVD's first kick boxer movie as a kid about 85 years ago.
I didn't think there was any need for a sequel, but we shall see. Most people I know haven't seen the first one, so hopefully they'll release this one more widely.

Oh TDK yo benchmarking bastard!

But seriously I'd love for CBM's to become more 'credible' as films. I still mantain that if martial Arts films like Crouching Tiger can score awards then CBMs can do the same.

Right now it's like CBMs are the new Horror movies, 'everyone' seems to love them but not enough people take them seriously as films. Lets hope Iron Man doesn't go the way of Freddy Kreuger and Chucky.

Can't wait for this movie though.
