In 2002, Warner Bros. acquired rights to make a live-action remake of Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira. Plans for it didn't start to really materialize until 2008. That is when Irish short film director Ruairi Robinson ("The Last Days on Mars") was brought on board to direct. At that time, the script was being written by Gary Whitta ("The Book of Eli"), and Leonardo DiCaprio would've been one of the producers. Of course things fell apart and the project would end up in two other directors hands (Albert Hughes and Jaume Collet-Serra) before WB finally pulled the plug on it in 2012. Below, you will find several pieces of concept art that conceptual illustrator James Clyne created for Robinson's version of Akira. You'll also find some artwork that Clyne created for Tom Cruise's Oblivion and Gavin Hood's Ender's Game.

Well concept artist's usually are forced to start design production even if casting isn't confirmed (i.e., Jessical Biel as Viper, The Wolverine). Chris Evans was probably in talks.

Never seen the film. Looks [frick]ing cool though. Wish they woulda made it.

Definitely see the resemblance. Chris Evans as Kaneda and JGL at Tetsuo would be awesome. The first two bits of art look awesome. Looks like they planned to go with a really large scale attack on the city from Tetsuo. I've always been concerned they would lessen his rampage if a film ever got made.

I am glad they did not make Akira. Some things are fine the way they are. Oblivion was kinda dull in my opinion like a 70's Sci-fi. Had the Logans Run-Thx1138 feel to it. Watchable just not memorable.

The Akira concept of the black guy must be based on Brandon J. McLaren

Oblivion was incredible. Visually and thematically amazing. There was so much underlying messages in that film.

It is taking way too long for a Akira movie. From the concept art, it could have been pretty good. I rather we do the movie before Japan, since they ruin movies with horrible CGI.

Shame Akira was scrapped. Sure would have nice to see Evans and JGL in the movie.

I recently saw Akira for the first time and I have to say it is one of the best animated movies I've ever seen. I would have loved to see a live action adaptation and I have a feeling this isn't the last we will hear about it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Haters crack me up. Like there is any reason to be "thankful" this wasn't made. Lets pretend it was made.... Ok if it sucked, does that somehow take away from how great the manga and anime were? absolutely not.... So if it sucked we can always go back to the original to be happy..... But what if they made this and it was freakin AWESOME? Then we would have three ways o enjoy this amazing story...We just don't know how it would've ended up. Get over yourselves and your negative hate all the time

I'm hoping WB figures out Akira, cuz the concept art at least looks spot on.
Hopefully along the way they'll also figure out that the Japanese culture isn't something that needed changing. Audiences that are going to see this film don't care about such things and they'll even earn points from the stubborn diehards who would've ignored it.

That concept art is fantastic. Chris Evans and JGL would've been a great mix for the film as well. Dammit I feel like watching Akira now.

That Akira art looks fantastic. It might have worked if they had not Americanized it. The story is just too rooted in Japanese culture.

Akira would only work as a live action film if it was shot for shot, 100% accurate to the original. To do that would be an amazing feat in itself.

God, I'm so happy that it's been aborted...

@ Tevii

You only have one chance to get it right the first time. I'd rather them put it off, sort everything out, and get it right than throw some unpalatable garbage together and kick it out there.
